"The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached?

To be fair, the execution was not that good.

Now, one can be interested or not in such a concept, but there are always a way: "Leatherface" so far is well received and it is an attempt to explain the leatherface "mystery"

Leatherface was never really a mystery. He was just one looney in a looney family that liked to kill people. They never painted him in any way as some unknowable force of evil.

Michael Myers is a better analogy of a mystery slasher killer who works best unexplained as nothing but a a force of evil. When you have a psychiatrist character sum him up as something that is just purely and simply evil, then that's all you need. The latter movies, and even worse the Rob Zombie movies crapped all over that by adding to Michael's story and trying to explain why he is the way he is. Big mistake, and not just because their ideas were horrible, but because Michael Myers should never be explained like that.

The same goes for the Joker.

Yes, Michael Meyers is a better analogy. And yes The Joker works very well as a mystery character. And i have no desire to see especially a Joker origin. But the point still stand : Zombie/Halloween was very flawed, i could see why it could have worked better (and i liked some bits) you think it would have been horrible anyways. Imo execution is the key.

DiCaprio as The Joker would be simply wonderful.

Fat chance it happens though.

He's not being sought after for the Joker. Remember this is "Joker Origins" so it would be a younger actor as well.

They are looking at DiCaprio for a crime boss.

DiCaprio is slowly turning into Jack Nicholson so this makes sense.

This was the part that interested me the most.

This plan was not met with applause in all quarters: Insiders say Jared Leto, the actor who portrayed the Clown Prince of Crime in last summer's Suicide Squad and is slated to reprise the character not just for a sequel but for another spinoff movie (with DC villainess Harley Quinn), was caught off-guard by the plans. Leto is said to have made his displeasure with the notion of multiple Jokers known to his CAA agents, and rival agency WME has been using the concern to court him.

Where did you get crime boss from???

WB is interested in DiCaprio to play The Joker, and Leto is not happy

Who can blame Leto? I would be annoyed.

Whether this pans out or not (probably not), it speaks volumes about how WB wants to be seen. They want audiences to take them and their movies seriously. You don't plan to court Leo through Scorsese out of nowhere. It's a calculated move to launch a branch of "prestige" comic book movies, trying to recapture that Dark Knight glory.

To be fair, this is not the first time. I believe WB wanted Leo as the Riddler in a Nolan movie before the man himself shot it down.

The only way DiCaprio says yes to this movie is if Scorsese is directing. Which i still think was WB goal from the start.

They may have been easing Scorsese onto the project by making him a producer first, but I think that would have been in one of these reports by now.

IMO:

1. Scorsese's deal is still up in the air so clearly WB approached him on this. Just being a producer does them no good (except maybe in marketing). He would not be Lucasing the project & a producer credit is not enough to land DiCaprio.

2. Todd Phillips isn't even locked into direct. "and possibly direct an origin movie of the classic Batman villain The Joker." - Hollywood Reporter. So sounds like he is the fall back if they cant get Scorsese (and his "thanks" for stepping aside would be the screenplay credit).

Yeah there is no way the entire movie would be just about Joker as a kid. We'll surely see the Ace Chemical accident at some point.

I don't know what they're doing over there.

Thats not the impression I've gotten from the Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and Collider. All indications are he's being courted for The Joker.

The article says:

For Joker, which could be the initial entry for the label, sources say the studio and Phillips would want DiCaprio or another A-lister to play the character as a gritty crime boss in a Scorsese-esque Gotham underworld.

So yeah, they allegedly want Leo for the stand-alone/Elseworld Joker. Whether that (or any of this) happens... I have my doubts.

They might as well wait for Scorsese to finish Irishman and Flower Moon and just outright court him to direct this.

Poor Leto. First they butcher his (awful) performance as The Joker in SS and now this.

Leto. Leo. Leto. Leo. Leo. Leo. Leo.

All it takes is one... bad... letter.

Ugh. Why the bullying origin, though? I'd prefer Joker to be a bully himself. I'd rather see a We Need To Talk About Kevin scenario where he's just born a psychopath who does horrible **** for no real reason. That's always how I saw Joker. A natural evil.

Yeah, hopefully they ditch the childhood thing.

Yeah, like, you wanna do his early adulthood or whatever ? Fine. But do we really have to go ALL the way back to his childhood ? Like, at least leave SOME mystery. Unless he's killing pets or setting his parents' house on fire with them trapped in it like that one comic book story, then I don't really give a damn, lol. And I know it's gonna come off lame as **** anyway if he's just this poor bullied kid.

Plus, not that it matters, but Gotham's kind of done that now with Jerome and showing us his upbringing, coupled with him killing his mother.

And they at least had him as a straight up psychopath from the get go, instead of " oh he wuz picked on az a kid and it hurt hiz feelwingz an he went coo-coo " . **** that ****.
