To be fair, the execution was not that good.
Now, one can be interested or not in such a concept, but there are always a way: "Leatherface" so far is well received and it is an attempt to explain the leatherface "mystery"
Leatherface was never really a mystery. He was just one looney in a looney family that liked to kill people. They never painted him in any way as some unknowable force of evil.
Michael Myers is a better analogy of a mystery slasher killer who works best unexplained as nothing but a a force of evil. When you have a psychiatrist character sum him up as something that is just purely and simply evil, then that's all you need. The latter movies, and even worse the Rob Zombie movies crapped all over that by adding to Michael's story and trying to explain why he is the way he is. Big mistake, and not just because their ideas were horrible, but because Michael Myers should never be explained like that.
The same goes for the Joker.
