Horror 'The Last of Us' HBO Series

Ok I'm slow. I just realized that the kid clickers at the end of 1x05 (like the one that chased Ellie into the van, and the one that killed Kathleen) were meant to be the kids from that underground school they were hanging out in.:csad:
I love that kind of setup. Poor kids. :csad:

I will say this, as someone who loves and absolutely adores the original game, six episodes in, this series has more than justified its existence. This isn’t just a one to one, from game to screen, beat for beat photocopy. While it does honor the source, it does make smart changes where it makes sense in regards to the new medium that it’s occupying and this version of the narrative being told. When it does bring in some familiar moments from the game, the new material is written in such a way that allows those moments to feel organically woven in. Even then, all of the emotional moments, when they do come, still hit. Maybe a bit differently, but still very effectively. Even the actors themselves bring something familiar, while also bringing some of their own touches.

That, however, doesn’t completely negate the original game, and this isn’t meant to be a substitute or replacement. This series is a companion to the original. People who love this series can go and play the game and love that, and vice versa. I have even seen and heard people online say as much that the series is turning them on to the game and getting them to check it out. That doesn’t sound like a dismissal to me. If anything, it’s more of a ringing endorsement.

Craig Mazin’s pixels quote from two months ago aside, in all of the stuff I heard him speak, from his own personal podcast and the companion podcast for the show, he clearly loves the original game. I never get any hint he has any contempt for the original source or feels like he is above it. I mean, he himself has worked on some pretty awful projects and has admitted as such. He has more than enough experience failing in the film industry to know not to talk down on someone else’s work.

I get your issues, though, and understand where you’re coming from.
Amazing companion piece, there’s a lot of value to watching the show and playing the game and they would enhance each other. I’ve always loved multimedia projects where you have books, comics, films, shows or games together but often one or more have been weak links. These 2 are both absolutely top quality and top of their genre.

My impression is that Druckmann doesn't handle criticism well. From what I've observed, the reaction from fans is overblown. But on the other hand, that type of story is always going to piss people off. I love Bayonetta 3, but I am not going to get upset over someone hating it because of how the story plays out. And that is a series where they can fix it with a lol.

As for emotional moments in games, it is dismissive no matter how you try to prop it up. Rewatching a series degrades an emotional impact just as much. I mean, I'm of a generation where Aerith was a bit of a formational experience for some.
Was a formational experience for me for sure. The example used by Mazin about characters repeatedly coming back to life is not taking into account that when you respawn in a single player game that means your character didn’t really die - every death in that sense is what could theoretically have happened if that character had taken a wrong turn or made a wrong move, but the canon version of the game is when a player plays through it and characters only actually die when they die in cut scenes, and those are very impactful. Sometimes (for me) in other ways that you don’t get in live action where you haven’t spent nearly as much time with those characters.

Actually just watched this episode again tonight and didn't even realise that myself. Good spot. You aren't slow after all!

Okay...this show has just jumped the shark with its unrealistic nonsense.

Society collapses and whats left of the US government becomes a fascist state? Okay...no problem.
A virus spreads and turns people into fungal zombies that eat human flesh? Yeah...I'm following.
But a Spirit Halloween animatronic prop that still works decades later? NO WAY!
You've gone too far, Last of Us. Do better.

Must be made in China, lol. :p

Storm Reid did not disappoint as Riley.

Riley figuring out the fatalities that quickly is more sus.

Wasn't sure if it was them or Eddie Veddar on his own. Loved the song but it was new to me. :)
It was on Riot Act, last album to come out in TLOS timeline… funnily enough, a few music snob on Twitter mentioned that Riot Act only had a cassette release in Asia - ha. Maybe Discogs made it post apocalypse.

Man, the build-up in the first half of this episode was absolutely perfect. You knew something bad was going to happen, but you didn't know when which made it even more tense IMO.

I really do applaud this show for not being afraid of ripping people's hearts out by purposefully taking their time to getting to know certain characters that they know aren't going to make it by the end.

Also, between this and Euphoria Storm Reid just keeps impressing me more and more as an actress the more stuff I see her in because she really has come a long way since A Wrinkle in Time.

They give us nice things and they take them away. :csad:

Great setting for this episode, and yeah she was great.

Great Episode .

Keep an eye on Storm Reid who played Reilly.

I think this young lady is going places in her future in Hollywood.
She's already had some appearances in some bigger films, but it'll be interesting to see her work as an Adult actress.

Another great episode. I'm also quite glad that
they chose not to do a scene with Ellie being forced to kill Riley and just leave it implied in previous dialogue scenes. Also blind viewers can breathe a sigh of relief in knowing Joel's not dead (yet).

On a somewhat humorous note, that one infected really took his sweet time tracking them down. :hehe:

Next up is the arc with David and Troy Baker's character and I absolutely can't wait for that.
