It wouldn't make a difference. Every fan of SF knows Ryu is the main character. Having Chun Li as the lead is a new direction.

Secondly why do people rate Woo Ping so much? Yea he's done some good stuff but hes also done some wack stuff the only person right now to do fight coreography is Donnie Yen!! People need to start being serious, what they need ot do is another Anime like the ORIGINAL not those wack alphas that weren't even cannon!!! But a serious hard core epic animated movie!

reseaching a character means nothing for box office. The only thing this movie needs is good action to bring in crowds. No ones cared for street fighter since the early 90s. Its not a big property anymore. Well anyways this movie is sort of doomed to fail. It has a terrible director and a unproven screenwriter behind it. Who is the mentee of David Goyer and we know how great a writer he can be.

i don't think movie will be much better than Doom, but Kristin not having previous interest in the character doesn't mean anything...




...after all, Christian Bale wasn't exactly a Batman nerd until he took on the role.

All this is is just trying to get streetfighter back in the mainstream so people will buy SF4 and SF2THD. I love Chun Li by the way, probably my favorite female videogame character, but I have little faith in this project. It's going to be a rush job that makes SF fans like me shake our heads and walk off trying to forget about it, just like all videogame movies ever made. ever.

Alien & Terminator don't count?

Aliens and Terminator 2 are much more than action movies about female heroes. I'm talking about the likes of Elektra, Catwoman, Resident Evil, Ultraviolet, Aeon Flux....the sort of modern day, martial arts + CGI/based on a comic/video game/cartoon/let's just have a babe fighting type movie.

Of course there are great movies with female characters taking a central action role, such as Aliens and T2, alongside Asian movies like So Close, Azumi, Princess Blade, etc. But I very much doubt Chun Li is going to be that kind of movie.

You missed his point. We already have Ryu's story several times over in several different mediums. Why should we do it again, when we have at least five other great characters.

Also whoever thinks that Chun-li is less "iconic" or publically recognizable than generic-looking Ryu and Ken, the obscure M. Bison and the one-bad-movie-with-everyone-else-in-it-anyway Guile is fooling themselves. Chun-Li is a main player in the SFU, which is why she's ALWAYS there, in some form or other, and, almost without out exception, a main character with a major storyline.

The Script review gives me a very good vibe. As much as I love the whole group, I think paring it down to just a few people will do wonders for the movie. If the action is as good as it sounds, we could have a new Martial arts action star on our hands. Imagine that. That said, it will most LIKELY end up on par with Ultraviolet and Aeon Flux, and subsequently be panned by fanboys as the "Worst movie evar" and "a complete flop," since it isn't done their way.

Also, the smaller cast is a great way to point out why Video game movies don't work. Video game storylines are designed around video game mechanics. (You have a fighting game, use lots of characters!) Video game mechanics don't work in movies, therefore, you either have to change the storyline or, in the case of, say, Street fighter, tell your story in fight scenes, rushing through the time between fights so that you can introduce all the characters.

Now that we have videogames that are more and more cinematic, like Halo and Prince of Persia, we have games that can translate their storylines and characters and such into movies better.

Of course, in those cases, the story has already been told cinematically. So why make a movie?

Also Chun Li doesn't hold the same fanbase as Streetfighter as a whole. She's not really iconic enough to justify her own movie, or even to be the main player in a film including the likes of Ryu, Ken, Guile & M Bison.

You're probably referring to my comment above. To be honest I don't think any of the Streetfighter characters are iconic enough (only Ryu even comes close) to hold their own film. I'm not meaning to single out Chun Li. Even as a huge Streetfighter fan, I wouldn't have that much interest in a film that only includes one Streetfighter character. There isn't enough material on any of them to make a good film so Hollywood will fill the gaps with all the usual ****. At least with more characters involved either in major roles or cameos, it could be fun watching them fight even if the rest of the film is total crap.
