It was NOT that great. It was a fun 90 minute tribute to FF7 with some great action, not much else.
i, myself, don't think it was all that...but it showed that a quality flick based on a video game is definitely possible.
Not all comic book movies are that great. I'd say only a handful are truly exceptional even though they are being churned out like mad now.
Everyone said that Silent Hill was going to be huge and fantastic and it wasn't.
not all comic flicks are good, true, but that has nothing to do with good comic book films being made after people said Batman & Robin killed the chance of a good comic book film.
as for Silent Hill...i don't know why you're bringing it up after i said that
just because it hasn't been done YET doesn't mean it can't be done.
My point was it something like that does NOT play in American theatres, it would not have played.
as if America is the only place where good, quality movies are made and played...
There's nothing really original about those games. Those games stories and characters themselves are really just the evolution or ripped straight from older, better Hollywood movies.
out of the movies i listed, the only you described was Metal Gear and even that series has plenty of originality. if God of War, Metroid, and Assassin's Creed are so unoriginal then give me some undeniable examples of movies they've borrowed from.
Having rich stories is not enough. Look what happened to the Resident Evil series. Doom. The list goes on and on.
of course having a rich story isn't enough. you need the right people behind it, but none of the video game movies thus far have had a credible director. a hack director can take a great script and make a crap movie out of it...but a great director can take a 'meh' script and make a great movie out of it. if you put a great director behind a video game that already has a great script.............well, i'll let you do the math.
It's not much of a movie to me since it was never released theatrically, and was just more of an extended OVA.
just because it wasn't released in the theaters doesn't change the fact that it is a movie. is a video game not a video game just because it didn't hit arcades first?
Joe moviegoer doesn't care about Advent Children. Joe moviegoer probably wouldn't go see Advent Children in theatres.
and just because Joe moveigoer isn't interested in it doesn't prevent it from being a good flick......case in point, No Country for Old Men. a critically hailed movie that only earned $37 mil in the theaters. on the other hand, National Treasure 2 (a totally mediocre flick) appeals to Joe moviegoer and has already gotten $65 mil in 4 days.
here's a tip for future conversations.....NEVER use a movie's popularity or box office potential as a measurement for a movie's QUALITY.
What works is that you play a video game and it's fun. It's active viewing and entertainment. Movies can't capture that in a game. Something people here have failed to realize.
if you say it can't be done then you'll get nowhere. people said Lord of the Rings and Sin City could never be translated into faithful, quality movies yet here we are enjoying their great success. when i watched Beowulf fight Grendel i thought to myself "this is straight out of God of War!"
if you keep looking with narrow vision then you'll never see the whole picture, but if you open your eyes you'll be able to see the possibilities. you're too focused on PAST events and movies to realize that the future is always uncertain. once again........
just because it hasn't been done yet doesn't mean it can't be done. that is an inarguable statement that rings true with ALL forms of creation regardless if you believe it or not.
