I'd love to see WETA or The Orphanage do the hypothetical CG for the Lizard.
But I also want practical prosthetic effects for the close-ups and tight shots of the battles with Spidey.

IMO, it would be cool if we could see Connors as a half human/lizard creature in the beginning, and as the film progresses, he becomes more reptilian and brutal. By the end of the film, his mindset would be like that of a T-Rex, only knowing how to hunt, nothing else.

Maybe do it like they did Davey Jones? (which I guess should be characterized as "fully CGI")

It would be dumb not to use both techniques for bringing the Lizard to life. They used real tentacles being operated by puppeteers for Ock as well as CGI for other scenes in SM2.

It has to be a bit of both. His eyes will likely be CGI as well as elements of the mouth, and most likely the tail as well.

They spent more on the effects in Pirates than they are on the entire Spidey movie this time around, so I am not sure they will have the bucks for a full digital Lizard.

Again, look at the Sammy creatures in HB1 - they were practical when they could be, and digital when they had to be - and that worked out great; but of course that's because Phil Tippett was doing the digital work.

Do we know for certain that Spidey will be battling the Lizard in this one?

All the facts point towards it. The countless rumors stating he is the villain and Sony giving a "No comment" to it all, Miles Elliot casted as Billy Connors, the official picture of the costume with the giant claw marks across his chest and on his face.

all CG but give the CG to a company capable of making lizard look photorealistic ala davey jones.

also sony could do a lot worse than give the transformation effects to rick baker.

intense fight scenes should use CGI, close ups should be practical. Also, Connors transforming into the Lizard should obviously be done using CGI.

Obviously both. CG will definitely be needed for action sequences, but during emotional and slow shots...practical.

Could be hard to translate to the big screen though. A practical Lizard "can" look goofy or amazing.

A digital Lizard can look just as goofy as a practical one - look at those laughable vampires in I AM LEGEND - is that what we want to see for the Lizard - I don't think so.

The criticism of the Raimi films from me is that they overused the CGI on some shots, when they could have done practical effects instead. I hope that they get the balance right in this film.

The vampires were different. They definitely should have been practical. People w/ make-up and then CGI for the enhanced action. Instead they went all CGI and that wasn't good.

But they had a humanoid feel. The Lizard is a giant lizard with ripped laboratory attire. Those practical effects better be damn good. They should get the Winston company to handle that situation.

CGI is a cop-out most of the time, so keep the cg to a minimal.. Make it look real and not a cartoon..

What company could do the practical right though? I'd go with Winston because of their amazing experience.

They did Jurassic Park practical dinosaurs...enough said.

That would be tough to do though. We can't have a puppet fighting Spidey on the side of the wall or anything. I think it shoulfd only be practical when there's upclose shots, etc.

WETA and given how they made everyone look larger than those playing hobbits, I would think they could make Lizard look practically larger when faced against Spidey.

The guys who did the Jurassic Park dinosaurs are perfect. Experience, and they'd basically make a glorified, slightly human, raptor. Easy

Why not? Puppeterrs and make up artists have made very photorealistic lizard men in the past. The Lizard can easily be a guy in a suit and make up with puppetry for the tail and jaw.
