The Lone Ranger

The original TV series didn't. It was a straight-up oater, and was managed adequately for several seasons on a regular budget. There was *nothing* in the realm of fantasy or sci-fi in The Lone Ranger.
When did I say it did? I'm saying The Lone Ranger fighting fantasy things isn't something completely out of the blue they're making up.

The '60s cartoon had science fiction, and even vampires. What Verbinski is doing isn't out of the realm from where they've taken the character before.
And I personally didn't like it back then either. I have no problem with a science fiction or supernatural western.....I just don't like the idea of it being done with the character of the Lone Ranger.

Yes. Yes, it is.

When the vast majority of people recognize the name "The Lone Ranger," they're remembering a famous radio/film serial from the 30s and 40s, a famous TV series from the 50s (which went into syndication for several decades), and (possibly) an obscure remake or two in the 80s and 90s. A kiddie cartoon from the 60s doesn't enter into the equation.

I guarandamtee you what happened is that Verb was offered the franchise, and he decided a straight Western just wasn't sexy enough for his tastes. So he predictably turns it into a goulash of mixed genres and throws in heavy doses of fantasy and sci-fi so he can get the budget super-sized to his level....at which point Disney quite rightly decides that's not what they had in mind at all for the character.

For Depp, the film meant enough to him that he was willing to take the cut, as he often does with his passion projects. As he's often said, he wants to recalibrate the relationship between the title character -- to be played by Armie Hammer -- and Tonto, his traditional Native American sidekick, whom he will portray.

"I like the character. I think I have interesting plans for the character, and I think the film itself could be entertaining and very funny," he recently told MTV. "But also I like the idea of having the opportunity to make fun of the idea of the Indian as a sidekick -- which has always been [the case] throughout the history of Hollywood, the Native American has always been a second-class, third-class, fourth-class citizen, and I don't see Tonto that way at all. So it's an opportunity for me to salute Native Americans."
Jerry Bruckheimer talks the cuts and the release date. The train scene remains intact, supernatural coyotes have been cut.

No! not the supernatural coyotes! I was hoping for those.

Maybe the werewolves will still make it in

New Mexico Film Office Announces Start of The Lone Ranger

Governor Susana Martinez and the New Mexico Film Office announced that principal photography will start on Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger in February and will run through August:

Governor Susana Martinez and the New Mexico Film Office announced today that Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films' The Lone Ranger, directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Johnny Depp, will begin principal photography in New Mexico in February 2012, with production planned in and around Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Shiprock and other locations around the state through the middle of August 2012.

"The Lone Ranger is proof that New Mexico’s film industry is alive and well," said Governor Martinez. "This administration is committed to fostering productive relationships with film studios so we can continue to offer our talented workforce and breathtaking backdrops for major productions. As we continue to build upon our reputation as a premier film production center, we are pleased to welcome The Lone Ranger to our state."

State and local officials have been working with the Walt Disney Studios for over a year to bring the project to New Mexico.

"We couldn't be happier to bring The Lone Ranger production to New Mexico. The state's world-class crews, local talent and spectacular locations will be critical in helping us take this iconic story and legendary characters to new heights," said Jerry Bruckheimer, Producer.

"I'd like to thank Governor Martinez, the New Mexico Film Office, and the people of New Mexico for welcoming The Lone Ranger to your state."

"We welcome The Lone Ranger to Albuquerque," said Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry.

Armie Hammer, Ruth Wilson, Dwight Yoakam, Helena Bonham Carter, James Badge Dale, Barry Pepper, Tom Wilkinson and James Frain will co-star in the adaptation that is scheduled to hit theaters on May 31, 2013.

*sigh*

I sense a train wreck coming to the Wild, Wild West. Literally and figuratively.

I hope to god it's a good film, but I have every reason to believe this movie is going to set back Native American representation in Hollywood and the entire Western genre in general a few decades.

What about Cowboys and Alie....oh.

Can we at least all just call the movie by what it is...

They're probably drawing up the new poster right now. ;)

Who wants to bet that Depp's Tonto drops a lot of peyote and smokes plenty of loco weed?

Off-topic:

"Tonto" in Spanish mean literally "fool." That's why his name has always been translated as "Toro" (which is something of a phonetic way to write it in Spanish) which mean "bull."

They're apparently changing the title to The Lone Ranger and Tonto.

You must not've read the front page of SHH yet, then. According to them, it's now called The Lone Rango.
bwahahahahaha :D

I keep seeing this blurb associated with the film It's like "'Don Quixote' told from Sancho Panza's point of view,"

Wasn't that somewhat the premise of Terry Gilliam's Don Quixote which would have also starred Johnny Depp actually as Sancho Panza, doing the same thing, a kind of POV witness to Don Quixote's "heroics".

Is it in Depp's contract when not playing the Titular Character role , that it must instead be told through his POV, thus keeping him the de facto star.

Well, that would be more accurate to what they'd wear as opposed to the more fictional account past versions have had.

The image is much more austere than I expected but I like it.
