The Lone Ranger

I'll be shocked if this thing makes over $200M domestic. It'll have to pull most of it's gross from overseas, where Depp is a big sell.
they are setting this up for failure no western should cost 250mill.i think after dark shadows domestic failure they would learn.this wont make 200mill domestic its gonna have to pull from overseas money.

Is it too late to scrap the entire project and go minimalist?

They can still go supernatural route but make it not so cg effects heavy.

The wendigo or werewolf rumors sounds like it could be good.

A western....this movie is a frikkin western and it cost more then most blockbusters. Seriously how the hell can a movie like this be greenlit with 215 million ??!!??

My understanding is, the movie is already so deep into production that they can't can it. They need to put *something* into theaters to recoup some of the losses.

( and then, they should *fire everybody* )

i mean our opinions about firing people and people getting fired will change if the movie comes out and does well. A lot of people consider MIB III to be a critical and commerical bomb after the bad set reports

But as Ive said for right now things dont look good

This clearly isn't the typical Western. Interested to see what the budget has ballooned for.

Bruckheimer besides Pirates 4 has been on a slump as of late. Sorcerer's Apprentice and Prince of Persia were both big misses.

I like and respect Verbinski, but making a Lone Ranger movie for over $200 million IMHO is ridiculous.

Director and storytellers' visions are important but I mean for a property like this I mean westerns IMHO defined effective, efficient, minimalist filmmaking. Like getting a lot out of a little you know? A movie like this should not cost more than $150 million.

Cowboys and Aliens had a huge cast, big name director, big budget and it flopped. And that movie cost LESS than Lone Ranger.

yeah even cowboys and aliens had a lower budget.here is a good example of a good western true grit.true grit budget 38mill made 170mill domestic good story good cast westerns can sell if good without special effects lone ranger is iconic

even with depp involved it shouldnt have been greenlite for over 150mill.

Neither was Wild Wild West or Cowboys & Aliens. We know how those turned out.

Maybe they should do a double billing of this movie and World War Z on how to not adapt the source material.

And we've seen what in terms of actual details about this movie?

Depp as Tonto? I can't quite judge it yet.

Hopefully this money is spent on something that looks very cool. Cause I'm curious about a big budget western. It's never really been done before. Although these over budget, schedule rumblings certainly aren't good, I'm interested in the diea of this huge sprawling western. It's a cool idea to bring a summer set bluckbuster western to audiences in a huge way.

It's aliens now? I thought it was werewolves :whatever:
Or maybe he'll fight this guy...

Anyway has anyone posted these full images of Tonto

Also love the fake Silver, it is amazing how they can do that.

And astronomical fx budget aside, the real setting is undeniably outstanding...

I imagine in here is the legendary boxed canyon, where the Rangers meet their fate.

All told the origin and setup of the Lone Ranger is one of the greatest, I think it will hold up and be the foundation and strength of the film, and outweigh any of the more eccentric elements they feel they need to bring to it for attention.
If they can sell that, the rest is just extra garnish.
I can't wait to see how they pull it off.

Funny I personally liked both these movies.

its mind blowing how the avengers was made for 220mill and the lone ranger a western is at 250mill and counting

I guess building trains from scratch isn't cheap.

Why do they need to do that when a) there are ones in existence to use and b) they can use CGI or scale models?

What a waste of money.

Read up on the making of HEAVEN'S GATE back in the 70's....it's not new for a director to spend loads of money to prove they are an arteest.

One movie that led to the effective end of a Oscar-winning director's career and the death of an entire film studio. An amazing film, in a bad way.

five hours and twenty-five minutes.. That is one LONG movie. Thanks for the heads up on such an interesting story.

Yep.
One of 'em's almost literally parked in my front yard. An old 1881 steam train that hires out for excursions and travels all over the country. And has been used quite often in Western TV shows and movies.

NOBODY needs to build a frickin' TRAIN from scratch for a movie.

Don't try to watch it all in one sitting, though. Not without making out your will and "goodbye cruel world" suicide letter first. :o

The only time I can see that a steam train might've needed to be built from scratch was for Back to the Future 3 when Doc Brown builds his time machine out of one of those old locomotives.

But for the Lone Ranger, it's certainly not needed. It had better do Avengers-type box office numbers to make back its costs.

There is no reason why a Western should cost $215 million.

Also, since when does the Lone Ranger fight supernatural creatures?

In light of JC it definitely looks bad, but in reality, mega-budgets should only be given to people like Depp, Verbinski, and Bruckheimer. All three have paid their dues. If not them, then who would you trust?

250 million for a Lone Ranger movie. Just doesnt make any sense and that crap about building trains from scratch to be more "authentic" is such bs.

I feel this needs to be brought up as often as possible

-Actual working railroad
-Functioning authentic town
-Working saloon

Those sets are part of the 200 million dollars spent

Producers have erected an authentic-looking old west town in the middle of the New Mexico desert ... complete with a saloon, a jail and a real functioning railway.

It's utterly ridiculous the amount of money spent.
