He was a member of the Large contingient of Texas State lawmen known as Texas Rangers....after he and his small area group of Texas Rangers were ambushed and killed (except for him who was only wounded)...he dicided to go out as the LONE ranger to continue fighting crime. Tonto was never a member of the Rangers...so even though Tonto rides with him....Reid is still a "lone" Ranger.

Ah, okay.

Still, it makes me think of the movie Airheads.

Ryan Gosling in Talks to Join Johnny Depp in 'The Lone Ranger'

Ryan Gosling is in talks to star in Disney's "The Lone Ranger," TheWrap has learned.

It's early, and Gosling's schedule might not permit him to take the role of the Lone Ranger opposite Johnny Depp as Tonto. Gosling is starring as Logan in "Logan's Run" which is scheduled to begin production this fall.

"The Lone Ranger" is a big movie: Gore Verbinski, who directed the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, is directing the adaptation of the durable franchise for producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

The Lone Ranger started as a radio serial and was later turned into a TV series. The Lone Ranger is a masked lawman who, with his Native American friend Tonto, fights injustice. Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels starred in the "Lone Ranger" television series form 1949 to 1957.

"Revolutionary Road's" Justin Haythe is writing the screenplay.

Gosling was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for his role in the 2006 film "Half Nelson."

"The Lone Ranger" is scheduled to be released in 2014.

So far.........I have never in my life pictured Depp as Tonto or Goslin as the Lone Ranger. Neither is the image of the duo to me. I'll wait to I hear and see more from it...but so far, not overjoyed.

I know he is part Native American....that has nothing to do with it. I have always considered him a great actor. I'm saying that to me he looks nothing like what I think Tonto should look like. It's a personal thing from watching and reading Lone Ranger stuff for over 40 years.

You also have to take into account that I have watched and read westerns all my life. I have watched more western movies that most people on here have watched all genre movies combined. When you think of a tough western hero or a tough native american.....Johnny Depp and Ryan Gosling do not come to mind. They are both excellent actors....there is a good chance that if they make the movie together they will be great in the parts....but what I am saying is, I hear thier names connected to the parts and I have to mutter "Whuuuuuuuttttttt?"

I guess the problem I might have with Gossling is his age. Since Depp is already officially Tonto, I want the actor playing The Ranger to be almost about the same age as Depp.

Come on, Disney and Bruckheimer!! Work harder in getting Eric Bana or John Hamm!!

Armie Hammer in Talks For Lone Ranger

EXCLUSIVE: The Social Network's Armie Hammer is in early talks to star opposite Johnny Depp in the title role of The Lone Ranger, the Gore Verbinski-directed film for Disney. I expect he'll soon be shouting "Hi Yo Silver! Away!" on horseback, alongside his trusted sidekick, Tonto. Yeah, Hollywood has this tendency to make some pretty frustrating casting decisions. It is obvious they want an actor who will surely not take the spotlight away from Depp.

Still, at least Hammer has a somewhat more classical look to him that is more appropriate to such a classic heroic character like The Lone Ranger than Gosling does. At the same time, who knows? Maybe having a relativley unknown actor as The Ranger might add a little more mystique to the character.
