The Lone Ranger

There's no reason those Western sets should eat up that much of the budget.

I don't think The Lone Ranger will be bumbling so much as he will be inexperienced at being a masked lone ranger. I would imagine Tonto will teach him some of the finer skills he will need to succeed in his mission.

Personally I think that the movie is still going to have some supernatural stuff in it.

i think there will be a lot fantasy in this movie. there is no other way to make a western big budget blockbuster action movie.

aliens or supernatural.

Exactly. A straight big budget adventure film made in this climate? I think not. I don't think that Aliens will happen though I mean they wouldn't want to remind the audience of Cowboys and Aliens.

There may be some spiritual supernatural stuff focused on Native American lore or something.

That's part of what I didn't like about Indiana Jones IV: all the alien stuff. I much prefer the original trilogy where it was a straight up adventure.

i thought the aliens were at the end like with IJ 1 and 3 where we got some fantasy at the end?

Raiders of the Lost Ark had angels, God's wrath, and supernatural themes....that was cool and acceptable.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, had voodoo, supernaturaly powered stones, and a witch doctor that could pull the still beating heart from a man's body and it takes that man falling into lava to finally die (without his heart in his body)....that's cool and acceptable.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade had an immortal knight guarding the magical cup of Christ for the last 800 or so years and it completely heals Dr. Jones senior's bullet wound within seconds.....that's cool and acceptable.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had aliens.....YOWZERS, THAT'S JUST TOO DAMN MUCH!!!!!!!!

You've got that right!

In High Plains Drifter a man came back from the dead to avenge his own death, but it was handled in a subtle way.

People not liking some of the CGI or Indy having a son I can accept, but the aliens complaint has never made a lick of sense to me.

As long as this doesn't suck as much as the re-make of Green Hornet i'll be pleased.

I think I read somewhere that the werewolves were still in the movie even after the budget was reduced.

For hearing about how much the set costs this movie is going to have to do crazy numbers

I'm guessing like 400 million just to break even.

Should've had someone like Lou Diamond Philips.

Absolutely not. Sorry, but I think Lou Diamond Philips is a terrible actor.

God forbid they actually get a Native American to play Tonto.

Yes, I'm aware that both LDP and Depp have a VERY SMALL amount of Native American blood, that's not enough.

I heard some people dispute that.

Depp is part Cherokee. It's technicality, but that parries any claims.

Depp says he "guesses" he is part NA, because his great-grandmother had some NA blood. IMO, having a relative somewhere down the line have Cherokee blood is meaningless.

While I enjoy Depp as an actor, I really wish they got someone who can actually claim to be Native American.

it fit with the decade the movie was set in, which itself was a necessity because of Ford's age. I do have some issues with the movie but the presence of aliens was not one of them.

I mean hell it's not like Indy was running around with a ray gun shooting Martians. The whole thing still had a mystical feel to it.

I'm really not feeling optimistic about this movie, but may actually see it anyway, as westerns are hard to come by these days. :(

It's a sad state of affairs when a big budget western apparently can't work without some kind of supernatural or fantastical elements. :csad:

well how much can be done with it really? I mean, western "homages" get's old after a while and become straight up parody.

Most westerns always had modest budgets. Can you name one big blockbuster western besides Wild Wild West?

Forget the big budget part, then. What I really meant was 'quality western with one or more big names'

it still doesn't address that you shouldn't need werewolves or an appearance by the cast of Jersey Shore or whatever other nonsense they try to sell these days.

If you want to blend genres, fine. I liked Cowboys & Aliens too. But I find the idea that a straight western will automatically fail pretty lame and sad.

Indy having a son wasn't a problem. It was the choices made in casting his son that was the problem.

I think Depp gets a pass on playing more ethnic characters because he honestly does not look 100% white. You can see some latin, some possible middle east, some NA...he's too ambiguous, but just white enough to be a bankable star.

This will not be a western in the traditional sense. It will be a "Pirates of the Caribbean"-styled western. I can only hope it's more like the first Pirates and less like its sequels, because we'll have another Wild Wild West on our hands.

Still a $200 million western seems ridiculous. Look at the use of Monument Valley in John Ford's The Searchers. Look at the use of the vast Spanish landscapes in Sergi Leone's The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. CGI monsters will not match that. 3:10 to Yuma, The Assassination of Jesse James, and True Grit were fine recent westerns (at least in visual scope for those who didn't like the plots/pacings) that were made for under $100 million each.

I'm very curious as to what will cost so much in this movie.
