Actually the real features on a real Native American look great, this looks like a white guy wearing a fake freakin nose.

I guess native americans are the only group left where you're allowed to use make-up to look like them without getting in trouble.

True, if a white actor today put on a fake prosthetic-nose or paint to look more black or taped his eyes pulled back to look more Asian (once common practice in Hollywood), there would be hell to pay today, the movie would be shamed, blasted and shut down immediately.
Because it's Native Americans (the last bastion for officially sanctioned Hollywood stereotypes , who they apparently still see as magical peoples from a magical land that don't really exist anymore) and has Depp fame & $$$ fueling it, this will blow over fine, and probably be celebrated for his authentic portrayal.
Meanwhile instead of recognizing, hiring and showcasing one of the many competent Native American actors out there, he's walking around with a freakin outrageous bird living on his head and a fake nose going - look I'm a real indian!

Basically if the "colored" character could pass for white, it's not as bad. Most races aside from black people have features close enough to white that it's not viewed as flat out racism to people.

In fact I've seen more whites with noses like that than Native Americans honestly.

I think it depends on the different groups but it is definitely associated with some of them somewhat stereotypically be it.

I doubt an actual Persian would have wanted, or been befitting to play that Xerxes role, as he was just portrayed as a fantastical monster, it didn't matter who they cast.
That is not the case here.

In A Mighty Heart Angelina Jolie played a mixed race woman who does not look white. She was nominated for quite a few awards, including a Golden Globe.

In The Prince of Persia, many of the roles, including the two leads, were played by white actors. My favorite being Richard Coyle from Coupling. t:

Wow you got me, Hollywood still casts big name whites to play a variety of ethnic roles, rather than people of that ethnicity. No freakin kidding, they do that all the time, nothing new, you only emphasis my point.

And I'm talking about adding PROSTHETIC to outrageously make them look like a cliche of that ethnicity.
I don't remember Jolly doing that.
And Xerxes in a way did that to a CG extreme. So you kind of made my point.
And the other movie you mentioned as I said was a parody to actually lampoon the outrageous practice. If it was done for real (as in hiring Downey, painting and giving him prosthetics to play an actual black man) would have been heavily protested.

Black face is a specific type of offensive makeup. Simply darkening someone's skin to appear a different race/ethnicity isn't black face.

Given that Lone Ranger(Hammer) is the actual title's name lead and that Tonto(Depp) is actually the boxo actor lead, It's actually quite brilliant how they got to somewhat convey both (the Rangers mask and Tonto's crow) in one image.
