(see also Daniel Craig announced as Bond).
Don't forget Ledger as Joker.
Those don't compare to what we'd be seeing if someone like Keaton was cast today. This place would essentially descend into being the online fan board version of the Rodney King riots in 1992.

"Comedic actor as Batman?! Rabble rabble RAAAAAAAAGE!!!!"

The TV spots are interesting, they pretty much make no bones about the fact that Depp is the star of the movie. They announce his name first, before Armie Hammer, and he's a lot more prominent in just about every shot used.

It reminds me of the 'Les Miserables' campaign that had many people thinking Anne Hathaway was the star of the movie instead of Hugh Jackman.

this has no shot with that insane budget for a western 250mill its only tracking at a 35mill opening weekend

I don't think this movie will do well but it is a holiday weekend so I doubt it will open below 50 million.

n.
i think the tv spots show that the story will be about Lone Ranger. Tonto gets a small flashbeck scene.

If anybody wants to make a wager regarding the success of this flick financially, I'm open to it. Personally I think it'll be one of the bigger hits of the summer, not quite Iron Man 3 level but close. Always play the odds.

Runtime: 149 min.

Mouse house has faith in Verbinski & Depp duo for sure.
This is not even in 3d, is it?

I am really looking forward to this film. But what you are basically saying is that it will make a billion. That sounds far to close to those that were predicting the same for MoS.

I like Westerns, and I've been trying to keep an open mind about this film. And I want to see Armie Hammer's career take off.

Then I saw the trailer, and heard the way Johnny Depp talks. Jesus H. Christ.

I hope this movie does poorly. I want it to tank, I really do. A message needs to be sent to Hollywood that this **** is not acceptable.

What isn't acceptable?

Possibly Depp's stilted, ugh-how Hollywood Indian dialect? At least I was pretty surprised that they went with such an outdated stereotypical delivery. It's very 'F Troop'.

That is how Tonto talks. That is the character. People are surprised he is talking like the character he is playing?

Tonto is a lot like a Kato. A borderline racist character that was fine 60 years ago but just isn't good anymore. Gotta update it

:funny:

Tonto is the star of this show apparently. I kinda of doubt he is going to come off like a racial stereotype in this film. More like Depp simply being Depp. Captain Jack Tonto.

I think White House Down will do better this weekend. Depp is an international superstar and the movie has action so it shouldn't do too bad overseas. The only thing I can see hurting it is the Western theme. People overseas are not fond of Westerns and us Americans aren't exactly in love with them either in most cases.

This movie will tank. Hard.

That's enough out of you, Rocket.

So we got the seal of approval from Rocketman that this will not tank at the box office. :o

Game over then, right?

I have no idea if it will tank or not. It could do 100mil or 250mil, who the hell knows?

To be fair, if he was cast today, the online response to a primarily comedic actor being cast as Batman would be so much worse and so horrific that I'd probably leave the Hype for a few weeks. Just to avoid the riots.

From the Wall Street Journal, in 1988:

http://www.timburtoncollective.com/articles/bat7.html

This line is less than persuasive to Batman's fans. Hundreds of passionate and humorless protest letters have poured into the offices of publications that cater to comic-book fans and collectors. Many of the letter writers voice strong suspicion that Warner may pull a fast one, springing on an unwary public a cynical sendup rather than a celebration of Batman.

Warner Bros., a Warner Communications Inc. unit, is "after the money of all the people who only remember Batman as a buffoon with a twerp for a sidekick in the campy TV series from the '60s," says J. Alan Bolick, a real-estate appraiser in Suwanee, Ga. "Hollywood is just in it for the money, and Warner Bros. has been doing a bit of duplicity. I don't think Mr. Burton has any intention of making a serious Batman movie. But Batman has been part of everyone's childhood. He deserves a bit of respect."

Fans have circulated petitions demanding a different cast, and they booed Warner representatives who had the audacity to show up at a comics-fan convention with a photograph of Keaton. A few fans also dislike the casting of Jack Nicholson as the Joker, a pathologically evil Batman archenemy. Mr. Nicholson, it seems, is guilty of having a sense of humor.

"How can you have Jack Nicholson playing a villain and not have him be funny," says David McDonnell, editor of Starlog magazine, a monthly devoted to science-fiction media.

There were reportedly more than 50,000 protest letters sent to Warner Bros. I saw a story about it on the news once - people were actually outside the studio protesting.

Yeah, I suspect having them protest via the internet is probably the lesser of the two evils.

Probably, but the methods would get more extreme, I think.

So nerds have always been pathetic? Oh boy. You know what I did when I didn't like Sony's choice to re-origin Spider-Man? I didn't pay to see the film, I rented it for free at my local library months later. I'm happy I did that because I didn't like the film so I saved myself some cash. The point is I didn't join some silly protest that I knew wouldn't work.
