Guard, come on now, you're a smart guy.

I'm a fan of Depp's too, but the dude is going through the motions now, with his white make-up and funny hats.

Bless him for The Rum Diary though but that's far and in-between. That's why we should be blessed for Trancensdence. But I'm still disheartened when Depp dropped 'Black Mass'.

And he still acts circles around most performers. What's your point? He's a veteran actor. If he wants to have fun and make money, he's entitled to do so. I'm hard pressed to recall a bad performance from him of late.

In the last five or six years...

He's been Jack Sparrow.

He played Sweeney Todd.

He was John Dillinger in PUBLIC ENEMIES.

He did RANGO.

He was The Mad Hatter.

He was in Dark Shadows, which I haven't seen yet.

He's Tonto.

He's going to be The Wolf in INTO THE WOODS.

That's a pretty good variety of roles, in my mind. What, he can't play more than one character who has white makeup or wears a hat?

If quirky characters is his bread and butter, what's the issue, exactly?

I agree and I disagree. There's a lack of perspective here, and I just feel like whatever I say won't change your mind! No offense.

Perspective meaning, seeing where I come from with Depp's career. There's a slight danger of him being complacent. Sure once in a while he branches out like in Rango, but I SWEAR TO GOD, he goes into 'wacky mode' it's just a variation of Jack Sparrow. My subconscious can't get rid of it, and it's like that for a reason.

I love Depp. I love him to death. But ever since I've seen footage of Depp as Tonto, I just kinda...roll my eyes. It reminds me of his take of Mad Hatter, in which I rolled my eyes because it just felt like an amalgamation of past performances.

He's going to be The Wolf in INTO THE WOODS.
How on earth did I miss this announcement?? :woot: I absolutely love Into the Woods, and I love Johnny Depp... so the two combining?

While I agree there's definitely a strong similarity between Jack Sparrow and Tonto, his takes on Willy Wonka, Mad Hatter, Barnabas Collins and Sweeney Todd have all been very different. Other than being oddballs (which Depp has ALWAYS done since the beginning of his career) and wearing makeup there's not much similarity in performance. I think there's become this weird backlash if Depp doesn't look "normal" he's doing the same thing which isn't necessarily true. Would it be fair to call Lon Chaney the same in all his roles because he played tragic figures and wore lots of makeup?

Again, I see where you're coming from with Tonto but not so much the others.

edited to add: Not sure if this is an official video or something someone edited/put together...either way wonderful effects in how it's put together and I think it looks awesome

The way I look at Depp's role choices is the way I look at Brett Favre and his incessant retirement a few years ago. Its his choice and he can make money however he wants and do whatever in the **** he wants...to put it bluntly. Depp doesn't always sync up with me, but when he does I have a good time so I'm content to set back and watch him work. And if I'm not wtf am I gonna do? He's a grown ass man making millions, and I'm on an internet forum. I think of the two of us he has his **** figured out.

Lol that's one way of looking at it. He's certainly not talking about us or our "artistic" choices on any kind of forum.

The entire cast for that one is pretty amazing. Depp, Meryl Streep, James Corden, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Jake Gyllenhaal, Christine Baranski and Tracy Ullman. Still waiting to hear who'll be playing Lil' Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel, but it's already shaping up pretty nicely.

Still, considering how small a role the Wolf really is, I'm much more interested in Depp's performance in Transcendence at the moment.

My heck.... that's a cast. I take it, then, that they're not doing what the stage version tends to do and have The Wolf also play Cinderella's Prince *snap* :oldrazz:

Indeed, that would appear to be the case, as Gyllenhaal and Pine are the Princes. I think they just saw the Wolf as an opportunity for an awesome cameo, lol.

Are there any early reviews of the film?

Are there any early reviews of the film?
Rotten Tomatoes doesn't have anything yet (I'm assuming technically there's still an embargo?)

A couple of users that have seen screenings have put 'reviews' up on IMDB (yeah, I know, IMDb users, so take it what it's worth)

IMDB also links to a couple of external blogger reviews (don't know how 'reputable' they are):

Thank you. We all all like to sit here and criticize Depp but clearly, he's done something right. Like Michael Bay. We don't always like his movies but actually gets **** done and has a success after the other.

Besides, I think Depp has gotten to that point where he just wants to have fun and experiment and have free reign in whatever he does, which is extremely rare for an actor in his position. At least he isn't looking like he's chasing an Oscar. Not many actors can do what he does. And if he does something we don't like, so ****ing what? We can whine about his artistic choices all we want, but at the end of the day he's Jack Sparrow making tens of millions and happy where he's at in life.

That's where I'd like to be. It's not about ego even. It's not about ignoring people's opinions for the sake and living in your own world, it's about being happy. Someday I'd love to be in a position where I get to do whatever I want and make lots of money and live happily about it. People's opinions on how I do them be damned, because people like Depp climbed their way to the point he's at now. And he's earned all that. So now, do whatever the **** you want.

And am I the only one here that's actually excited for this film? I'm going in with low expectations, but this looks like so much fun. I'm worried about the overuse of special effects and budget that shows on screen but hopefully it's still fun. Hopefully Verbinski had a sense of control of the scale balancing the story.

This film could have been budgeted around the same as the first Pirates or even a bit higher. I just hope they don't do a John Carter and go all out crazy with their debut film of this character. In other words, I don't want a sequel scaled film with this. I want a film that reaches its marks, but not something overwhelming looking like Dead Man's Chest or something.

Here's the thing. I don't think anyone's saying his career's going down the toilet nor that he's struggling to make money at all. We're not talking about his career success, because the guy makes money at the Box Office.

What I'm saying, and what I think others saying on a personal level is that Depp's performances are getting old. It's not as exciting as it used to be. He's either hamming it up in Burton or Verbinski's movies (with mixed results), or going through the motions in other movies like he did in movies the Tourist and The Rum Diary.

Then again, while I'm typing this, and realizing how those movies ended up, if I were him I'd stick to Burton and Verbinski too.

Agreed. Love the guy. Think he's one of the best in the business. And I'd rather he be rich than struggling. But the last movie of his that had me even remotely excited was The Rum Diary. Wild hair, white face paint, big eyes/shocked expression, quirky dialogue... no thanks.

And am I the only one here that's actually excited for this film?

Seeing it on Monday. Had other stuff to do this week. I have literally no expectations for this. Clayton Moore will always be The Lone Ranger to me. I just want to have some escapism fun here. Love the Pirates movies. If it's even remotely similar in tone and humor I'll be fine.

Of course, I can understand that. I'd like to see him do more of course, but so far, those quirky roles are working out pretty well for him for the most part. But if I were Depp, I wouldn't give a **** what someone like me thinks of him. He just seems to be doing things that interest him, not for the sake of diversity or what others like you or me want of him, which I respect.

Yeah Depp as a Native American isn't really exciting to me. I understand the movie needs star power but I sort of wished someone else was in that role. We will see. I will give it a shot but I don't expect anything.

I'd have liked the see adam beach in the role he always seems to be one role away from ever really making it big.

The original Tonto on the tv show was actually a canadian aboriginal as well.
