So nerds have always been pathetic? Oh boy. You know what I did when I didn't like Sony's choice to re-origin Spider-Man? I didn't pay to see the film, I rented it for free at my local library months later. I'm happy I did that because I didn't like the film so I saved myself some cash. The point is I didn't join some silly protest that I knew wouldn't work.

BUT THEY'RE DOING SOMETHING WE DON'T APPROVE OF, LET'S SCREAM THE LOUDEST AND SEE IF THAT WORKS!!!! :o

I'm hardly the biggest cheerleader for the movie, but when I watch the trailers, it reminds me of Wild Wild West. Not to mention, I still think its absurd $250 million was spent on this.

I don't have a problem with how they cast the movie or giving Depp top billing, I mean Hammer is still a nobody at this point. It makes sense to market the movie around Depp.

At the same time, Depp is playing Tonto, basically a racial stereotype for Native Americans, and the character looks to still embody those stereotypes.

It's not a NERD RAGE thing.

The trailers for this don't make me think this is cool or exciting like Pirates of the Carribbean did.

:funny: I've been trying to be a smart A-hole as of late. I don't always succeed but I'm doing okay. Like if a forum is annoying me too much I'll take a break from it instead of turning into hell on wheels and generally stop you know crying about **** that doesn't matter. I'm too old to get deeply involved in childish crap anymore.

I'm not trying to dismiss anyone's complaints Vile, I'm not into whitewashing characters. The movie looks mediocre and I'm getting tired of Depp's shtick. I only hope it doesn't completely tank because I like Hammer and want him to break out and get more work.

The movie doesn't look bad -- it looks pretty entertaining for an empty calorie summer film -- but there's no way it looks its bloated $250M budget. It looks half that, at the most.

Bruckheimer AND Verbinski need to stop this crazy spending. Cut your quota or settle for a backend deal. You're pricing yourself out of the business.

I understand what you guys are saying too. I once fought the wars of the Spider-Man, Captain America, Batman, and Avengers threads. I don't care enough to do it anymore. I'm getting old. :o

That's why I just only hang out in certain thread and forums (mostly non-character forum threads) anymore.

Oh, the nerd-rage was around well before the internet. Starlog Magazine (RIP :csad: ) had a letters-to-the-editor section that was usually full of the kind of complaints you'd find on a message board today.

The attitudes haven't really changed, just the methods of communication.

I know I shouldn't care because it isn't my money but the budget on the movie in just baffling to me. I understand 150mil but well over 200mil for a freakin Lone Ranger movie? I guess if it makes cash it won't matter but I don't get it. It's almost like most movies are set up for failure now or days. These days I give a film props for having 170mil budget.

Very true.

I care somewhat, just because I think they could have been better off using the money for several smaller budget movies which probably could make more as many combined, or allocating that money to another studio under Disney.

There's no way the Lone Ranger should have cost as much. Not even the older fans are too thrilled about the movie. Verbinski is a good and capable director but he does need to know how to budget these movies.

I'm really hoping this does well because then it will eliminate the stigma on the genre. I have no idea why "sea based films" and "western based films" have difficulty at box office.

dont forget depps salary

And the fact they built an entire train and laid their own track. You guys think that is cheap? If they had used cgi and green screen you guys would be fussing about that too probably. I see people fussing about the over use of cgi and the reduction of practical sets on these forums on any given day. Well here is a hell of a practical set and I see people fussing about the cost like they were handed the bill for it.

On a slightly different note, I swear anymore I wish they would put "Inspired by..." in every movie trailer for films like this. This is a film inspired by the original show. It isn't the original show. Sorry but at this point you should know whether you're gonna see it. Continuing to moan about the film and how its molested your precious Ranger is migraine inducing. Just don't see it. Problem solved.

I don't run around crying about CGI. CGI is a good tool for filmmakers and it is here to stay.

My point is people just like to find things to ***** about.

Yeah the budgets $200 million, but it went into practical effects and sets among other things so I'm not gonna get too up in the air over that price tag.

Yeah. Laying that amount of track and creating a train is far from cheap.

The industry is going to kill itself if the studios keep spending 200-250mil for every blockbuster movie.

Between inflation and the cost of resources today budgets are going to keep rising. The cost of lumber and steel and petroleum based products have soared. Then you have some of the ridiculous actor paychecks and you see how this isn't going to change. Also look at the size of movie crews today. It all adds up. But you can't just change that. To make huge blockbusters it costs...a lot. Movie goers expect huge spectacles during summer and to an extent during the holidays and Hollywood will sell its grandmother for spare parts before it stops making cash cows.

At first I didn't think I was going to go see this, but the more action clips I see it has pretty much changed my mind. Hope it holds up throughout the film.

That's because it's not really a lone ranger movie or at least that's not what the selling point is.

It's a disney johnny depp action-adventure blockbuster that is trying to capture the essence and success of the pirates franchise. The fact it's using the lone ranger licence is practically besides the point anymore.

They aren't going after the original lone ranger fan base but the pirates/johnny depp fans. They could pretty much just call it "Pirates out west".

Its the Lone Ranger through the lense of today's movies and blockbusters. I don't see any other way this property could have been brought to the big screen today and been a big financial success.

And there is the fact that the Lone Ranger is the perfect vehicle for Depp and a good time at the movies. And there is a good chance it could launch Armie so I don't see a downside. Just go with an open mind and you might just have a good time.

Blasphemy coming, but I hope this does well and we get a sequel. I really want to see what they can do with the larger supernatural aspect they cut from this film. Doesn't have to be anything crazy, but I'd like to see this property expanded and continued if this one is a good time at the movies.

I'm not a lone ranger fan myself so i really don't care how close it to the source material. To me it just doesn't look like a good movie, i don't care how many trailers they release.

I've grown tired of depp in these type of roles which is all he seems to do now. I actually think this movie bombing would be a blessing in disguise for his career and maybe he'd get back to the films that made him a pre-pirates star.

Either way i don't really wish any ill will on the film i'm just curious as to how it will do really? Because it will say a lot about depps current star power if this thing does become successful imo.

You mean Tim Burton movies? Which people are also tired of him doing? :hehe:

He needs another movie where DiCaprio plays his mentally challenged brother.

THEY COULD REMAKE RAIN MAN!!!

Sawyer, I can't believe I'm saying this, but you may have a hit on your hands. :o

Could you imagine Leo's performance during the farting scene? I mean...
