I think we as fanboys treat actors doing stuff like this like music fans booing when their favorite groups does something off their new album.

And am I the only one here that's actually excited for this film? I'm going in with low expectations, but this looks like so much fun. I'm worried about the overuse of special effects and budget that shows on screen but hopefully it's still fun. Hopefully Verbinski had a sense of control of the scale balancing the story.

This film could have been budgeted around the same as the first Pirates or even a bit higher. I just hope they don't do a John Carter and go all out crazy with their debut film of this character. In other words, I don't want a sequel scaled film with this. I want a film that reaches its marks, but not something overwhelming looking like Dead Man's Chest or something.
Your not the only one, I've had my tickets for a July 4th showing since the middle of June.

As for the 'over use of special effects' one thing to remember is that a lot of the effects are going to be practical (Gore didn't want to rely heavily on CGI) and that's where a lot of the budget came into play. They built their own town, they built several miles of their own railroad track, and (probably most expensive of all) they built their own period steam train/engines from the ground up (not cheap). So I think (hope) that its in those painstaking details that make the budget worth it

crap sorry i thought this was the white house down thread.

I cant decide if this is going to be good fun or just down right awful. The last trailer I saw looked not bad, but the ones before were ropey. Might wait for DVD/Sky

Too bad this comes out the same time as Despicable Me 2 or else I'd probably see it

Usually yeah but my not good spending habits have finally caught up with me

Nope, I am also very excited. Have been for awhile. I love me a good western and I like what I see.

Nope, I'm looking forward to it as well. Going to see it with my dad next weekend. I have no expectations whatsoever, but it looks like fun and I still love seeing Johnny Depp.

I adore how you view going to the movies. :yay:

Perspective meaning, seeing where I come from with Depp's career. There's a slight danger of him being complacent. Sure once in a while he branches out like in Rango, but I SWEAR TO GOD, he goes into 'wacky mode' it's just a variation of Jack Sparrow. My subconscious can't get rid of it, and it's like that for a reason.

I love Depp. I love him to death. But ever since I've seen footage of Depp as Tonto, I just kinda...roll my eyes. It reminds me of his take of Mad Hatter, in which I rolled my eyes because it just felt like an amalgamation of past performances.

I know its a common perception, but I just don't think that's a fair or accurate complaint. If you actually sit down and compare some of those performances, you'll find some pretty key differences in his tone, his mannerisms, the voices he chooses, and even his vocal inflections. Johnny Depp’s one of the few well known and bankable actors who can truly transform himself in a role. Think about other megastars like Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, etc. How many of their roles feel like some variation on some part of themselves? That’s the nature of acting, especially professional acting.

Obviously audiences don't feel its getting old, because he's still a bankable star.

While I agree there's definitely a strong similarity between Jack Sparrow and Tonto, his takes on Willy Wonka, Mad Hatter, Barnabas Collins and Sweeney Todd have all been very different. Other than being oddballs (which Depp has ALWAYS done since the beginning of his career) and wearing makeup there's not much similarity in performance. I think there's become this weird backlash if Depp doesn't look "normal" he's doing the same thing which isn't necessarily true. Would it be fair to call Lon Chaney the same in all his roles because he played tragic figures and wore lots of makeup?

Again, I see where you're coming from with Tonto but not so much the others.

This.

Though I don’t know…Tonto looks a bit more serious and measured than Sparrow, as a character.

Same here. Well except for the Johnny Depp part I can take or leave him these days.

BoxOffice.com had the long range forcast at $37 million/$140 million.

As far as the budget goes even with building their own train and track I still don't see how you can justify the budget. If anything I think spending millions if not 10's of millions of dollars for one scene is crazy. And the less they spent on the train the worse the budget as a whole looks. I give them props for not over using cgi but when you consider that there mioght be a chance that the movie wont break even then it makes no sense. Personaly I think this movie should have cost $150 max.

It's the studios money but I don't get the budget either. I mean Depp is huge and Jack Sparrow was one of the best things to happen to Disney so I understand 125-160mil but over 200mil? That's just crazy. Honestly the movie is screaming box office disappointment to me. That long range forecast might be a little too high. Hopefully it isn't for the cast and crews sake. With the exception of Despicable Me 2 the July releases look so iffy to me. I mean both Lone Ranger and Pacific Rim aren't guaranteed to be big hits, I could see both going under 140mil domestically when all is said and done. I'm hoping for some surprises because things are not looking good.

Could be cause its Verbinski. They guy gets huge budgets to play with. If they gave him more I'm sure he would've found some way to spend it.

Maybe he stashed half this budget away to make a Bioshock film at a later date. :hehe:

I blame Disney. They should've rein in the budget before it went north of 200 million, but now there's no way for this movie to make a good profit if the forecast is true. Looks like they have learned nothing from the failed John Carter movie.

i find it interesting how Verbinski shoots a lot on real locations and uses real practical effects. but almost noone praises him. Nolan on the other hand gets 4 pages because he was on a snow mountain filming a 2 minute scene. is Gore Verbinki's budget not on screen? did he ever make an expensive movie that looked cheap?

how is this not awesome?

i think people have a problem with Depp but then also include Verbinski.

We praise who we like, nothing more.

Are we talking about the same Gore Verbinski? The three Pirates of the Caribbean films he directed were pretty heavy with CGI, specifically the second and third films.

Gorgeous... Moab is absolutely beautiful. Goodness knows I wouldn't want to live there (it was 100*F when me and my sister stopped for gas on our way home north after visiting Santa Fe, NM at the beginning of June)... but it is a BEAUTIFUL place to visit. The red rock is just stunning.

*okay so my Utahn pride is showing just a bit :oldrazz:*
