http://chud.com/nextraimages/loneranger.jpgCiting a "trusted source", Frosty at Collider is reporting that producer Jerry Bruckheimer has targeted The Lone Ranger for blockbuster reinvention; Frosty's also insinuating that the Pirates of the Caribbean team - director Gore Verbinski and writers Ted Elliott & Terry "The Incinerator" Rossio - have been enlisted to give the vintage serial a hip, modern, sexy, dark, tumescent spin. This is news to me, but it's backed up by Peter Gilstrap's May 18th Variety profile of Elliott & Rossio, which plainly states, "Beyond another Pirates project, word has it that the scribes might be doing a take on the Lone Ranger saga for Bruckheimer."

Though I've come to hate their mechanical screenwriting, this is terra firma for Elliott and Rossio, who worked a minor miracle in 1998 by revitalizing another antiquated hero with The Mask of Zorro. And lest you think this is a wacky idea, this is actually the second time in the last three years that Hollywood has tried to revamp The Lone Ranger (producers Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher hired David and Janet Peoples to spruce up the masked cowboy back in 2004).

As for why these folks think The Lone Ranger is poised for a comeback, well, it's the name brand, stupid: boomers grew up watching the serials on television, their kids grew up listening to them prattle on about watching the serials on television (which didn't help the box office of 1981's awful The Legend of the Lone Ranger), and the boomers' kids' kids are growing up listening to their parents ***** about listening to their parents prattle on about watching the serials on television. Yes, The Lone Ranger... enthralling one generation while aggravating the piss out of two others.

And, yet, what's outmoded now can be made to look glossy and edgy and less racist with a little studio processing, and that's where Elliott & Rossio come in. The first item of business will be the Ranger's faithful sidekick, Tonto, a childhood friend who, in the most popular version of the story, helped the hero (a Texas Ranger known as Reid) fake his death after nearly being killed in an Indian ambush (obligatory Native American casino joke: the Rangers were winning big at Blackjack all night and never once tipped their dealer). Expect Elliott & Rossio to clean this up a bit - i.e. Tonto will be the survivor of a slaughter, with The Lone Ranger helping him track down the men responsible for his parents or wife's or longtime companion's death(s). Also, expect them to write in huge CG set pieces involving trains, stagecoaches, stampedes, Pecos Bill and zombified cattle - all at once.

I really could care less. All that matters is that they incorporate "The Lone Ranger Creed" to the very letter!

Way to much waffle from the guy writing the article but the idea of a Lone Ranger movie appeals to me,i used to watch the old re runs as a kid,could be fun

Very much a teaser, but looked good. Depp's Depp, but Hammer looked B.A.

Depp is not stretching too much huh? I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm not too surprised. Love the guy but he's deep in his comfort zone. It sucks he won't be Wes Anderson's next film. It wouldn't been different for him.

When it comes to those type of westerns then no. WIld Wild West or Jonah Hex are more blockbuster type material then westerns per se.
I'd qualify something like Open Range or Unforgiven or that Coen brother flick ( forgot the name ) as "true" westerns.

And from the looks of it , Lone Ranger will be the former.
Not saying that it's a bad thing because Verbinski knows how to shoot spectacle. It's just ....250 million for a frikkin western ??!!
Seriously.

If he's always like this , it does sorta make sense why they didn't want him to make a Bioshock movie.

I disagree. When it came to television (Deadwood, Hell on Wheels), video games (Red Dead) and smaller films, it's been (surprisingly) ok for westerns.

But like what has mentioned before when it comes to Hollywood tent poles, that's a different story. And shows how studios can be backwards sometimes with blockbusters verses Indy films and TV.

audiences don't pay to see depp be a normal character he has left his comfort zone in

public enemies
the tourist
the rum diaries

but they were his least interesting roles

people want to see depp go crazy and fantastical like mad hatter and jack sparrow

it is his sell much like people don't want to see the rock in family comedies they want to see hi mas a bad ass action hero

I just re-watched the trailer, and what did I notice? In the credits listing at the end, Depp's the only one that gets his name before the title.

I tried to watch the trailer on the Tonight Show website, but all it has is the audio. It shows a video of a trailer for some comedy, but then the video stops after that when it gets to Armie Hammer's interview.

Ok thanks. It wasn't on youtube earlier when I looked.

At least they should've had BOTH Depp's and Hammer's names before the title "The Lone Ranger" in the credits, and not Hammer after the title. Anyone casually looking at it who doesn't know who is in the film might think Depp is the Lone Ranger

I hope it has the William Tell Overture as the theme. That teaser used none of that.

This is my thing. I don't mind Depp coming first. It's that Hammer doesn't get pre-title, period.

Armie Hammer's name isn't recognizable. Nobody in the general public knows who he is. Maybe if the film is a hit his name wiill be but not at the moment. Keira Knightley's name didn't make it into the credits of the first Pirates of the Caribbean trailer either.

Don't know if the once rumored werewolves are in this movie or not, but seeing a Silver bullet in the trailer does not confirm or deny them (and are not really a spoiler), Silver Bullets have always been part of the Lone Ranger canon, regardless of any werewolves.

The thing is blocked now. Anyone else know where it might be?
