The Look of the Turtles

So in this version, if the turtles kept the red masks but wore clothes to express their personalities you would have to be ok with that right? I mean it accomplishes the same goals as the masks right?

Reread my posts up above. I said they changed the color of the red masks with different colors to keep them identity; make them unique. Not to say their individual personalities didn't do that but I understand why they did it. What do adding clothes do? Someone please answer this for me.

Also, if they "were" or "are" going the reincarnation route, hypothetically, then couldn't Shredder just be a shogun or samurai in Feudal Japan who dies but is reincarnated as Oroku Saki and not a white man named Eric Sachs? I mean he could find the armor, continue the legacy of the Shredder, but does it in the form of an organization known as the Foot Clan.

It's the same thing. Clothes add to their personality more than the colored masks do. The turtles are influenced by American culture it makes sense they would display that outwardly.

We're talking about characters who desperately want to be a part of human culture but are denied that because of the way they look. It influences their speech, their hobbies and their tastes. Why wouldn't bits and pieces of clothing be a part of that? Look at it from a philosophical perspective. They literally dig through trash in the sewer. Adding discarded sunglasses or pants -- that don't fit their physiques -- to their wardrobe is poetically tragic. It's a connection to a civilization they want to live in.

Finding an old TV and DVD player/Blu-Ray player, a stereo system, Ipod, arcade games, thrown out furniture, assimilating one's self in pop culture, reading books and the newspaper, and listening to people talk from the sewer, and going on missions and observing the human world doesn't turn them into humans? Because that worked in the past and every incarnation of the TMNT.

I understand the idea that they want to be humans or be accepted in the human world, but they do it by their speech, by their mannerisms, the fact that they love pizza, can quote pop-culture, and such. Yes, they have human emotions and go through human problems, but they still are mutant turtles.

I don't see or understand the need to slap clothes on them. To me, the clothes are more concealing of who they are (for example the old cartoon whenever they wore a trench coat and hat or clothes people would say, "Nice costume! Nice outfit!") No one took them serious as a big, walking talking turtles, but someone in a suit or Halloween get-up.

To shed of the clothes, they're more free. They're saying to the world, "I'm a teenage mutant ninja turtle and I'm proud to be one."

It's like X-Men. There's the fear the world, the homosapiens, won't accept them, but finally they're like, "Hey, I'm a human being too it's just I can grow gills or freeze things or read your mind." It's just stepping out the door and saying 'embrace me world.' Look at Mystique for example; she tries to hide her blueness when Magneto thinks she's absolutely perfect the way she is.

I just say just let the TMNT be who they are; not what some Hollywood schmoe thinks they should be because he or she clearly doesn't understand them.

In that case I refuse to believe those were all cops in TDKR. Namely because they all shuffled into the sewer and none of them had guns.

But I digress

Actually dumb cops is perfectly reasonable given bad writing.
I'm mostly joking with my response, however nolans fight scenes are inane. Obviously you have a point.

So you just want the same exact **** over and over again?
Just because something works,it doesn't mean that it's the best or only way.

It sure worked all the times they did it. Again, if it ain't broke don't fix it. (And note, this doesn't work in every comic book to film-adaptation but the TMNT are pretty easy to not to **** up. But hey Liebsman and Bay sure are ****ing them up.)

But whatever... it seems to me there's apparently no use having an opposite opinion here.

Fudge it. Give them ears and hair too. I mean, that's progressive and different, right?

Yeah, I really hate how the arguments in favor of change are being used here. Change can be good, but that doesn't automatically make every change good. There's no point in arguing the logic behind them wearing clothes or not wearing clothes, because in the end you either like the change or you don't. Personally I'm okay with the turtles having hints of individuality to their appearances, but entire outfits seems a bit far. The new cartoon did things like a crack in Raph's shell, Donnie's tooth gap, Mikey's freckles, etc., and I absolutely love it. If Mikey just had a tattoo or a necklace or something I'd be cool with that, but I think dressing him in a full outfit of clothes goes a bit too far for my taste. There doesn't need to be a reason behind that feeling, it's just how I feel as a fan. I'm open to change, but that doesn't mean I have to like and accept every change they make.

obviously they don't WANT TO STAND OUT. They want to blend in, hide. Just chill out and see what they are trying to do before ripping it to shreds

Yep because clothes completely change the characters like that would right? Lol at the people so terrified of little changes.

They could've "changed" the look of the turtles by going with how they looked like in their original incarnations. That would've been infinitely more preferable to what we're getting.

I don't usually hate on things but I cannot in good conscience not hate this.

I take back every bad thing I've said about it, it's not even that bad I was just over reacting because of the mask probably, but I actually love it now (the mask)

and I know the real movie won't look as fake as that, the only thing that does annoy me is the glasses, because how do you wear glasses without a nose or ears? I will be buying the costume for sure and the movie would be better if the actors actually wore this set of halloween costumes instead of using computer effects.

I think it would be easier to forgive the costumes if anything about the production inspired confidence. I grew up a huge TMNT fan and had been hoping for a big budget adaptation for some time... But just about every single piece of news (casting, costumes, quotes from the production team) that has come out has been completely negative. At what point do you have to stop giving them the benefit of the doubt?

I'm new to keeping tabs on this thread so if someone could fill me in on why there are so many complaints about the casting? What exactly is this in comparison to?

As far as production news goes, what's been bad about that? The title hasn't changed. The set photos/mo-cap suits look good. As far as I know no solid story details have been released

Its mainly megan fox as april and Fitchner as white shredder, also Woodburn as splinter gave people fits too. Apparently not enough Japanese casting/influence for some people.

That's what I don't understand. The Megan Fox hate is quizzical. She looks great as April. Definitely hotter than the previous two Aprils and even her jacket is a nice throwback to the cartoon series jumpsuit. Were there complaints about her in Transformers? I can't find fault in her performance there, unlike her supermodel replacement in the third.

Fitchner is another story. He's a phenomenal actor. Don't see why he'd sign on to play a crap character.

Hopefully Fitchner being in this is a sign that shredder will be a good villain.

So, someone on Reddit claiming to be the person who leaked the costume image had this to say of the other turtles:

Leonardo has a somewhat ethnic looking breastplate, but other than that he's pretty much exactly what you would expect. Raphael has a bandanna that covers more of his head than the rest, as well as sunglasses on his forehead, but is probably the most normal looking of the bunch. Donatello...is an offensive geek stereotype. He's wearing the "nerdy" glasses with the tape in the middle and some sort of high tech goggles on his forehead (much like Egon); His shell literally looks like a proton pack, with several gadgets and tubes running around it. I'm not sure why...

Megan Fox is a competent actress, but she doesn't bring anything more in terms of acting. Considering the amount of young, talented, attractive actresses out there she is not exactly a great choice.

Ok, that does sound pretty bad. Especially Donnie.
