I guess cats had to be very cheap and commonplace back then.

Cats are unfortunately like rats and bunnies as far as their reproduction is concerned. They reproduce fast and frequently. In the US alone there are around 70 million stray cats. Imagine what that number would be if we didnt euthanize and neuter stray cats. A couple hundred years ago stray cats were probably even more numerous than they are today.

Man, I had my waxed denim Vans cleaned, and they washed and painted them!!

All the paint stains they have collected are gone and now they look good as new!
