The Marvel Year In Review

Cool. I saw a trailer for a movie called Stop-Loss this weekend when I saw Juno. It's about the troubles a soldier goes through in being called back into duty after his tour has been completed. It looks to be pretty anti-war, while still being fully pro-troops.

It was cute. Juno (the character)'s dialogue was written to be a little too clever; like Dawson's Creek, but updated. Michael Cera is his awkwardly hilarious self and J.K. Simmons is his awesomely acted self. The most interesting part of the movie is Juno's relationship with Jason Bateman's character. Good stuff.

Great thread and great job Phaed. I hope all is well.

So will there be a post reviewing the evnts in 2007 such as Civil War, Annihlation and WWH?

Annihilation was a 2006 event, mostly. Only the last issue came out in '07.

Ah, okay. I was a little ambivalent because my friend saw it and said that it wasn't that good. She said Juno got annoying because she was too sarcastic. In my experience, there's no such thing as too sarcastic, and if her dialogue is just unbelievably clever for a high school kid, I don't have a problem with that. It gives me false hope for high school kids of the future. I'll probably watch it sometime this week.

If that sort of dialogue doesn't bother you, then you'll probably love it. I liked it. I cried. :(

Cool. This friend tends to want really rosy, happy movies all the time anyway. She couldn't understand why I thought Children of Men was an uplifting, feel-good movie.

Children of Men was incredibly hope filled. I loved every second of that movie.

Her response to that would be, "But he died at the end!" To which I (and probably you and anyone else with some appreciation for storytelling) would reply, "But the pregnant girl survived. He gave the human race a chance for a future." Followed by, "Yeah, but couldn't he have survived, too?"

:(

Really? I thought it was ok, but I was cringing from the beginning because i saw it going the way of pretty creepy/pedophile. Maybe I read too much into it, but I felt that wasn't necessary.

No, that's definitely where I thought it might be headed, too. I'm glad it didn't. I just liked seeing a man who's been unintentially castrated by his wife taking his life back and finding himself again.

Yeah, I saw myself feeling really sorry for Jennifer Garner's character, and in my head went Awwww! when she got her kid finally. Juno is too good of a movie. RockSp needs to watch it and try not to care about the characters.

Yeah, Jennifer Garner's wanting to be a mom so bad, and especially her scene with Juno in the mall were tear-worthy.

Ellen Page is fantastic, I can't believe she did X-Men 3, well I guess she needed money to continue rocking on the independents right?

She's always good. For as good as she was in Juno, I still liked her better in Hard Candy.

Juno was a great movie! But, I was an Ellen Page fan ever since I saw her in Hard Candy. Now, that movie makes anything between her and Jason Bateman's character in Juno seem mild.

And, Ahura, I am going to cover all the stuff you mentioned. Annihilation didn't come to a close until January of '07 with the final issue; so, it still makes it on my list of comics to do. I still have 73 titles left to finish, and haven't had a chance to get to any today; because, when I woke up, we had 3 inches of snow and school was cancelled. I have my daughter at work today, and she doesn't make it very productive to write stuff down. I'll try and get some done when I get back from lunch, though.
