If you had to guess, what do you think will happen?

  • Sony will keep the rights and press on with S6, ASM 3, and other spin-offs

  • Sony will keep the rights and reboot the franchise

  • Sony will cut a deal with Marvel and let them reboot the character w a clean slate

  • Sony will cut a deal with Marvel and let them use Andrew Garfield in their upcoming films

This might be redundant given that we have several different threads going on at the same time with more or less the same discussion, but I really want to bring it all in and get your thoughts on what is the most likely scenario at this point.
If you had to guess, right now, gun to your head, give an answer, what would you say is the future of the Spider-verse?
To summarize, we are all aware of the basic facts:
1. Amazing Spider-man 2 was a mess and under-performed, showing that Sony's biggest franchise is on the decline and making the future for their hastily-cobbled together Spider-universe look increasingly grim.
2. Sony Entertainment was hacked and this revealed much of the inner workings of the company and brought to light several unsavory things about the way said company is run.
3. As it has been revealed, they have been floundering for a while trying to figure out a solid direction for Spider-man; discussions have been had about multiple different options including a possible animated feature, a return for Raimi, an all-female led Spider-film, an ASM 3, etc, all in an attempt to rejuvenate life back into this dying franchise
4. Sony was apparently in talks with Marvel to lend the character to them for their upcoming Civil War movie and beyond; talks fell through, and Sony proceeded to press on with their misguided attempts before the hack.
5. Rumors now indicate that the higher-ups in Japan are displeased with this decision, and want to revisit the deal in attempt to return the character back to quality.
I may be brushing over a few details here, but given all this information, what would you say is the most likely scenario? Obviously none of us can know for sure what the future holds, but if you had to put money on it right this second, where do you see this franchise going?

Nice thread

I can see the marvel deal falling through and Sony rebooting the franchise again. They won't want to give up the cash and they're too arrogant to realise that they don't have direction.

If the deal with marvel fell through its probably too late

I can see Sony being stupid as hell, keeping the rights, and running the Spider-Man name / franchise into the ground. Hoooooopefully, they relinquish the rights to Marvel.

I think they're gonna cut a deal with Marvel, and Marvel will start completely fresh.

As much as I'd want that I just don't see it happening. The odds of Sony letting go of their one last golden egg just seem pretty slim to me, no matter what the rumors are.

Good, I say. Then they'll lose it through sheer incompetence eventually anyway. They can only reboot so many times in a certain timeframe. And if doing so causes people to like the movies less and less then eventually they'll be forced to stop making them entirely for a good long while. And then they'll miss their deadline and the rights will revert. Hallelujah. And Marvel won't need to pay a dime to get him back. All they need is patience.

I want to say that Sony will cut a deal with Marvel and let them reboot in the MCU for a cut of the profit. But that's the smart choice.

I think it depends on who is running Sony when this hacking thing ends. I don't see the current regime being kept around.

I warn you! Sony is an affront to Marvel! Sony is strangling Spidey's IP and his fanbase, the whole Earth! But not forever.
I tell you the day Sony's ownership of him falls there will be a shout of freedom such as the world has never heard before!

I have a feeling Sony is just going to reboot the franchise.....again. It's a real shame we have to continue to suffer through this. Hopefully I'm wrong and something positive happens for a change.

Praying Sony makes a deal and realizes it's better for them to let Marvel have creative control and reap whatever rewards are agreed upon. Can't go through this again.

I'm one of the biggest fans of the series you'll find but its become fairly obvious the most logical solution is to just give the rights back to marvel.

Sony has been caught out in these leaks, they have no direction or purpose anymore. Getting rid of Garfield was the final nail in the coffin for the series I feel.

I hope Sony never get their hands on the property ever again, I've spent a while defending them but its clear that was misguided.

The most logical decision is to sell to marvel, which is why I feel it won't happen, Sony have shown their ability to be completely illogical.

Sad times for spidey

After thinking about the whole situation for last two days...here's what I think will happen (or should happen)

Sony will -
* Decide to retain Spider-Man movie making rights.
* Reboot the franchise.
* Make a deal with Marvel Studios to allow Spider-Man be a part of MCU and appear as a guest star in some Marvel movies.
* Expect a much younger Peter Parker this time.

Edit: The whole situation is bad for Webb and Garfield, just think how Raimi and Tobey must have felt when they were thrown out by Sony.

I don't think Maguire and Dunst gave a ****. They were patently phoning it in for SM3.

Looks like Studio 8 could co-finance and co-produce Spidey now so my prediction would be: no deal with Marvel and another Spidey reboot.

I'd like to be pleasantly surprised- I feel like Sony would be stubborn, though. Somehow thinking pulling another reboot outta the blue is gonna solve all problems.

I think there are (only) two ways...

1. Sony will keep the rights, cancell the ASM series (thanks for that :) ) and will either reboot the franchise completely or will kick-off "a new one" with S6, Venom or a female Spiderman movie (to buy themself some time).

2. (and my favorite, and maybe best for Sony)... Keep the rights and make a deal with Marvel. Let Marvel do the work for you, let them make Spiderman shine (again) and take out the profit! (and have a shared risk)
I think they will make the same money then with lesser risk... Give Marvel Spiderman for their MCU, let them reboot Spiderman and have him appear in some other MCU movies and do just some spin-off movies by yourself!

But i see one problem with the second point:

"The Hulk problem"
As we see, Marvel are making no Hulk solo movies as there is a similar contract with Universal (Hulk). Marvel will not make any Hulk solo movie as they have to share the profit with Universal. I do not know any details, but Feige said something after he was asked about a Hulk solo movie.
That could lead with Spiderman to the same problem after one or two movies.

Personally i think, that Sony will not make a deal with Marvel and try to reboot the franchise AGAIN.
I have no problem with that, as long as they finally make a GOOD movie.
Take the Peter Parker from the first comics, take the original villains, make it a Spiderman movie, and not a Peter Parker movie, keep the romance part as low as possible (but unfortunately i do not think that Sony will and can do this!!) and first of all - find a good and interesting concept!

I think with Disney being the most powerful company in the world, their negation skills will pay off in the end of this, especially with how much leverage they've received in light of the recents leaks. They can make things very worth while for sony, especially in their current state.

Sony will keep the rights and reboot the franchise

As much as I'd love Marvel to get it back I don't expect it to happen. This is Sony we're talking about. That hack Arad being around doesn't help either.

I honestly believe that a deal will be done.

Sony's hand is being forced.

And with Amy Pascal likely to be booted (and in turn, Avi's influence at Sony Pictures), the deal is even more likely.

Pascal has to go, but the Spidey thing isn't her fault. She tried to get this done. Of course she is going to consider the input from all her people, but she tried to touch all points in the memo and played hardball with Marvel. Ultimately Lynton will make the call on this, not Japan. It's far beneath them to meddle with something like this.

I think Robinov's Kraven Last Hunt reboot is **** if it is not a sequel to (as crazy as this sounds) Raimi/Maguire/Dunst trilogy, or Garfield who is now married to MJ. A reboot has no chance to fly.

SS and female spinoff are nonsense concocted by the megalomaniac that is Arad. SS has no chance. Female movie would be a low budget rights extender.

60/40% co-finance and distribution deal is the only thing that makes sense and this is what I expect to see happen. As far as cross over deals, Sony gets either domestic or international distribution rights for all major Spidey crossovers into the MCU. This ensures that Marvel cannot avoid making Spiderman solo films and expect to retain 100% of revenue generated by Spidey/MCU crossover and ensemble films.

It makes sense. It is simple. It will happen. If it does not, I see Japan finally stepping in and axing Lynton and his entire team.

Let these movies die. Hardly anybody is content with the past 2 and we remain iffy on the future.

I actually like the sound of Sony's idea of rebooting Spidey to be older. But I don't trust them to handle it.

I think a lot will depend on just how hard this leak will hit Sony Pictures, they are looking at big lawsuits, big losses of money, and the possibility of becoming a bit of a pariah. This could leave them in a situation where they really don't have an awful lot of options. If its really bad it is theoretically possible for Sony Japan to decide just to get out of the film business if they decide it is just too much of a mess. If Disney were to swoop in with a good deal then who knows what could happen.

I'm torn between 'cutting a deal & reboot' & 'Sony blundering ahead with a reboot'. If what they're saying is true then they've already let Andrew go (which seems like one of their bigger mistakes here). I think making a deal with Marvel and starting afresh is ideal, but I get the feeling that Avi Arad & other Sony execs really don't want to deal with Marvel on any level. Like cutting your nose of to spite your face.

I don't think Marvel will go for that. If they tie Sony's Spider-man to the MCU it will basically be like having a branch of the MCU that Marvel has no control over, or has to trust someone other than itself not to screw it up. That's why they broke off and formed their own studio in the first place, to avoid this kind of thing. And they have an unbroken string of hits stretching 10 films long. I don't see them being willing to risk tarnishing their golden mega-franchise by agreeing to something like this. No, I think(unless Marvel are fools) they'll stay in the position they are in now which allows them to be the ones dictating terms.
