The Mothman

Not even in the top ten of freaky things I've gotten up to. :o

El chupacabra poops in this thread.

Lions, & tigers, & bears, oh my!!! Honestly, it baffles me how people believe these things. :whatever:

My earliest and most passionate ambition was to become a cryptozoologist.
The first couple of years of high school I'd spend my lunchtimes in the library pouring over materials concerning the Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot, El Chupacabra, and any number of weird things.

I was also into almost anything that had para as a prefix.
Did I ever want to believe there was more to this miserly world than what we knew for sure.

*sigh*

Pictures can be fixed or doctored. There have been numerous reports, supposed sightings, & even footage on Bigfoot, but the fact remains that scientists or people who pursue him have not been able to find a viable trace of DNA or something to prove its existence. I'd catergorize Mothman the same.

Well, there are numerous instances of hair and other DNA samples that have been found while searching for Bigfoot. When analyzed, they are not recognized to have come from any known animal. Does that mean it's Bigfoot? No, since we'd have to have actual Bigfoot DNA to compare it to since DNA doesn't wear a "hello, my name is _____" sticker. But the DNA DOES prove that some type of unclassified animal is out there.

It is incredibly improbably that a large mammalian species, or reptilian, or sea monster, has somehow avoided detection so well. The population would have to be so small as to have probably gone extinct already.

There is also the fact we sometimes discover more species of animals, not necessarily Bigfoot.

The hot spots for discovering new species is in rainforest, heck, far as I remember we've found at least 1 or 2 tribes in the last 15 years we didn't know were still out and about and doing their own thing unaffected by us.

But I won't for the life of me believe that there are giant ape-things chilling in Washington state or huge sea monsters dwelling in Scottish lakes.

I'll summarize with this, I don't want to trod down people's beliefs in creatures that "supposedly" exist. I, in my opinion just view them as mere myths or figments of the imagination.

Don't confuse my post as a profession of the belief in Bigfoot. Merely stating that there is DNA proof of some type of as-of-yet unclassified animal, which is not uncommon in the slightest, as others have mentioned.

Would it be cool? Absolutely. And I'd be lying if I said that certain claims of supposed evidence from around the world wasn't intriguing. But like you said, its improbable that a race of large, bipedal organisms living in the US have gone undiscovered. I love cryptozology, if only for the legend and myth, but that doesn't mean I have to believe any of it.
