The Neon Demon

Agreed, Especially if Mads Mikkelsen returns.

Yeah, but OGF was panned AND it didn't make money. If this winds up the same way, people might start to avoid him.

Budget $4.8 million. Box office. $10.3 million

It did aight, Gosling only took 100k.

Yep. BN's right. I personally know the Unit Production Manager of Drive and he showed me, albeit edited, budget sheets for Drive. NWR's movies are cheap enough that he can afford to make something off the wall and controversy prone. I'd say Neon Demon is going to do OGF numbers.

Amazon is rumored to have paid close to 5m.

NWR is in da clear.

The Neon Demon: great, glam, gory genre delirium from NWR. Controversy ahoy! #Cannes2016

The Neon Demon: vapid but visually stunning supermodel horror with a darkly comic edge I really dug. Plus lesbian necrophilia #Cannes2016

Worth noting The Neon Demon also received boos before it even started when the Amazon Films logo popped up. #Cannes2016

Ive noticed some seem to think its cool to hate on Amazon now. Meanwhile Im over here a Prime member ordering stuff most days of the week.

I have zero problem with what Amazon is doing. Three of my favorite filmmakers are NWR, Jim Jarmusch and Woody Allen and all three have inked deals with Amazon to release some damn fine looking films. If that's what Amazon plans to do with their studio then I say bring it the **** on.

I can't wait for this. It always seems like the hate OGF and maybe now TND get are from people who have only seen Drive or expected something similar. Drive is the odd movie in Refn's filmography, lol.

Two RT critics gave it a perfect score. I think this is a love or hate thing. There were some people who dug OGF, but I don't remember any perfect, glowing reviews out of Cannes. At least this got two.

Most definitely the case, especially with OGF. People were really expecting another Drive, but got Valhalla Rising 2 instead.

Drive is indeed the odd man out there but while Only Gos Forgives is much more in line with his other films it felt like a real deliberate middle finger towards those that came aboard for Drive. I think it got its Intended response.

Only God Forgives was an oddly memorable theatrical experience for me. I saw it at a brand new theater that had just opened in downtown St Louis. It was an afternoon show, the very first time it plaid in the city. There were only 3 other people there. After the movie we all stepped out into the lobby and just sort of knodded att each other, pausing as if to catch our breath. "Well that certainly was something" someone said. We all agreed and then disbanded. It was such an odd shared moment.

One of my best friends is a film critic out in LA and he just got the invite for a press screening. We should be seeing more reviews pouring in by this weekend.

IGN's track-record is spotty, at best, so their rating of this isn't surprising. I'm sure they would consider Valhalla Rising slow and empty, and possessing tired attempts to shock.

So that press screening I mentioned a few posts ago was cancelled. The official reason was that the final cut was not ready. Wonder if they're re-cutting before the wide release?

You gotta think that Refn has always been an off-beat director, and movies like Drive were accidentally mainstream and well received. But he's always done idiosyncratic films. Of course they can be poorly done but it's always been his wheelhouse.

At this point, artistically, for his next movie maybe he has to be more conventional with The Avenging Silence. If not, he won't get any funding. Like if he's making small indie movies that are well received, then he'll get support from studios, indie and mainstream.

From what I've read Amazon are 100% behind Refn. Hell, Amazon Studios Twitter page have been retweeting some of his "f*** the system" quotes from Cannes.

I think some people are just waiting for another Drive-type film.

Yes, to both of your statements.

With companies like Amazon and Netflix, indie films get a new life that isn't strictly dependent on theatrical success. NRW will probably continue getting support from Amazon if The Neon Demon is even mildly successful for the company.
