The Naked Fun in The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

I've thought waaaaay to much about this and come to the conclusion that we should have seen something more than a rinse and repeat of the dropped lady sequence from Infinity War. While the gang was workshopping the retrieval of the stones in Endgame Nebula should have realized that the Soul Stone required a sacrifice. She convinces Natasha to switch places, knowing that her mostly robotic body is awfully difficult to destroy (I am ignoring her blaster death in Endgame) and she could shut herself down if necessary. Using the cool masks from the Winter Soldier, the gals pull a Freaky Friday style switcheroo, with Natasha using lifts and Nebula shortening her robot legs to match each other's height. Natasha/Nebula goes with Rhodey. Nebula/Natasha overpowers Clint, shuts down and is mangled at the bottom of Mount Vormir. After Hawkeye gets the stone, Nebula reboots only to be collected by Thanos before she can meet back up with Clint. Natasha gets back safely and is ready to pose with the ladies in the Endgame final battle and then star in a solo film.
I think the soul stone might be a little too smart for a psyche-out/switcheroo
Although I guess it did fall for Thanos's bulls***t version of "love" for Gamora lol
I know Black Widow isn't the type of movie that screams "billion dollar hit" but I do wonder how much it would have benefitted from that post-Endgame boost.
Had it just come out after Civil War in 2016 when it was set, I think it could've hit a billion (with maybe an actual Hawkeye cameo/Budapest scene)

The fact that it is a prequel for a deceased hero killed much of my enjoyment for the flick, despite adding two great new characters in Pugh's BW and Harbour's RG.

I didn't mind Gamora's death in Infinity War so much because it led to less murdery Thanos for the rest of the film and we got a new and improved Gamora in Guardians 3. But smooshed Widow was a waste that was undercut by Tony's death and (with the pandemic), her dying cut the solo flick off at the knees.

I dont really care if it was a prequel for a character I saw die. I have read old 80s and 90s and 2000s comics and plenty of stuff where I know how something happens later, and in the end only 1 thing ever matters: did you tell a good story? Black Widow for me did. It was very good movie about past sins and family drama that needs addressed so the family can heal. I couldn't care less that I know Natasha dies on Vormir or not

What do you guys consider a timeframe for pandemic era? I personally say 2020-2022 since studios didn't really feel comfortable releasing films back in theaters for a while and just did streaming.

I don't think Black Widow would have git a billion. I think it very much would have been hit with the post Endgame slump. Endgame was very much a finale, and going "yeah we're still going" was a very, very tough pit to dig out of. One I'm not entirely sure they have yet.

And in other news, the new Marvel Rivals trailer leaked early. :o :o :o

I remember when that show came out and not liking it. It was on Cartoon Network I believe.

As far as Spielberg’s West Side Story, I have nothing to add except that DeBose earned every bit of that Oscar for how she killed it with “A Boy Like That”.

When she slapped Maria I was like…

Which is why it's so damn heartbreaking to see her (or her agent) picking all the worst projects with just this year alone.

I just watched her in the House of Spoils and it STUNK.

That's how they do black women with Oscars in Hollywood bro. You see Halle Berry isn't getting those Meryl Streep roles either. :o

I'm going to say March 2020-December 2021. Even though we were still technically in Covid times with the Omicron variant that hit right around the holidays in 2021, that was also the end of the day and date streaming on HBO Max but more importantly, Spider-Man: No Way Home came out and became the first post-Covid release to hit $1B.

2022 felt like more of a return to normalcy as far as theatrical releases go, especially by the time Top Gun: Maverick came out. Disney was going overboard with a ton of direct to streaming movies that year like Chip N Dale, Hocus Pocus 2, Disenchanted, and Pinocchio not to mention the Pixar movies but at that point I think that had more to do with pushing Disney+ subscriptions than the pandemic.

The biggest lesson the SUMC has taught us is to fire your agent if they try to pitch their movies to you.

I dunno, Madame Web apparently helped Anyone But You get made, which worked out very well for Sweeney.

She was so miscast in that movie. It's now even more obvious Glen Powell wasn't the problem there.

What's likely to be the highest grossing movie of 2025 is missing from that list:

Though I don't think a lot of people are aware that it's coming out in December just yet. If anything I'm expecting average moviegoers to be surprised that another one is coming out so soon after the 13 year wait between the first and second movies.

Avatar 3 and Tron 3 are coming out this year

Oh that comes out this year? You KNOW it’s making bank.

As much as I love James Cameron, those Avatar movies do absolutely nothing for me. Just like those Jurassic sequels, I don’t get it, but people eat them up.

I'm expecting kind of a repeat of 2022 as far as the box office goes, minus Top Gun of course. Avatar 3 at the top with Jurassic World behind it at # 2 but also passing $1B.

Yeah, but Leto though. :o

Avatar will be highest grosser. It's going to make 2 billion-ish, so anything that makes more has to best 2+ billion. Nothing I think is doing that
I'm most curious to see if it outgrosses The Way of Water because now that they're coming out more frequently there's gotta be a slowdown eventually.

I can at least understand why the Avatar movies are such hits because they're spectacles that are pretty much required viewing in a theater. I still don't understand how Jurassic World Dominion made so much money though. Nostalgia can get you far, but the fact that it made a billion meant that there were people going to see those damn locusts multiple times. I can at least hope that the new one will be better because it's probably making a ton either way.
