*The New Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

This is how it feels being the only person I know who really can’t get into Andor:

I only finished season one because my wife was loving it. I have no interest in starting season 2.

Glad everyone else likes it though.

All this talk about Andor, and I'm just over here wishing to be a fly on the wall during the conclave.

If the movie was any indication, I KNOW those Cardinals were being all kinds of messy.

But I digress. :sneeze:

I wish Whedon had done a better job of getting Thor back on to earth. After how Branaugh’s movie ended with the interesting conflict of keeping Thor trapped on Asgard due to the broken bi-frost it felt anticlimactic that they just hand waved it and said “oh yeah he used some black magic spell, its all good.” Lol
By Age of Ultron it was clear that Whedon didn't care about Thor or at least know what to do with him. He got shortchanged in the first one but him being mostly absent from the whole second act of Age of Ultron just so he could go take a bath and foreshadow Infinity War was disappointing.

Yeah, the entire Thor has to take a bath subplot is just so odd lol! I like the rest of the movie, but that part is laughably bad lol! But I still say overall, AoU is one of the MCU's most underrated films. I can rewatch it anytime and I love it

Whedon never could work with characters with the likes of Thor's power set. Which is another reason why I never could rock with his taste in X-Men and the roster he chose, but that's another story.

The only godlike character he ever aced was Glory (shout out to all my fellow Buffy fans in here).

Just say Kitty. We know you mean it. :fuming::o

In hindsight it was lame that they included that shot in the marketing leading up to it because it would have been awesome to experience that on the big screen for the first time but I get why they did it. If that movie had failed they very well might have scrapped most of their lineup after Iron Man 3.
Would've been neat, but honestly the movie does such a wonderful job at drawing you into their earlier dysfunction that regardless you still get that same kind of high. I'll always remember the eruption of the crowd both times I saw it opening weekend. The Sunday night one in particular was electric. "Chicken Jockey" ain't got **** on that :o

It's BECAUSE of Conclave that I'm shocked at how quickly they chose a new Pope, lol

I think time has been mostly kind to Age of Ultron. Later projects like WandaVision and Ragnarok have enhanced my enjoyment of it and I thought Spader's Ultron was a fun villain. The one thing I really don't like about it that blatantly stood out even more after Civil War were the constant jokes flying around when Sokovia is in the sky and on course to cause global extinction. You have Tony shaken up after he meets Alfre Woodard in Civil War and saying how devastating Sokovia was as if he wasn't trying to make his mandatory quip quota at the time.

I'm not saying they needed to take out all of the jokes but Whedon should have toned it way down during that whole battle. Hawkeye being self-deprecating about having a bow and arrow against a flying robot army? Keep it. Hawkeye and Black Widow driving around an active warzone talking about renovating his house? Get that outta there.

I think as a story, AoU is too similar to the first film, without creating an effective villain and not being able to give much meat to the new or even old characters outside of a couple of exception. But I do enjoy Clint in it.

I think the biggest issue for AoU is that it was sandwiched between two better Avengers movies in TWS and Civil War.

Age of Ultron is better than a lot of the movies that have followed it, but my god is that script such a mess. You can feel Whedon cracking under the pressure of trying to figure out what to do with everyone and a lot of his worst habits (and disgusting creeper vibes) come out in full force.

The farm break in particular has a lot of really strong characterization for half the team, but also contains the gross Bruce/Natasha stuff and Thor ****ing off for no reason.

All this talk of the first Avengers flick, and I always go back to the point that Nat has two intros for no reason other then Joss is a perv. Her intro with Banner is far more effective and emphasizes her skills that standout then that warehouse fight scene.
What, you mean Natasha's ability to escape from being tied up in a chair whilst wearing a form fitting dress doesn't foreshadow the way she tricks Loki into telling her his plan later in the movie? :o

Weirdly, if anything the Avengers being jokey during the third act kind of makes Civil War hit harder. All that joking around ultimately bit them in the ass. You almost understand why Zemo hates superheroes and wanted to destroy The Avengers at that point.

AI is more relevant than ever, so AOU just feels more like a ball dropped by Whedon. If you look at the trailers for the upcoming Mission Impossible, I think that is what the audience was hoping for with Ultron, that he would create those kind of stakes where it almost feels like the world is ending because this AI entity is taking over. We didn't really get that.

Civil War isn't an Avengers movie. It's a Captain America movie guest starring the Avengers. But we can agree to disagree there.

As for it being too similar to the first movie, I dont really agree. It has the same structure and such, but I see it as being quite fundamentally different from each other than say Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II are to one another. I see AoU as really our only classic Avengers have a random story movie. Avengers we saw them form and Endgame brought them back together, but AoU is our only this could have just been any random single issue of Avengers type movie. I wish we had gotten more of those style of movie IMO

The creep factor isn't even the part that stands out to me the most. It's the slowing the film to a crawl for the most unnecessary scene imaginable. My inner screenwriter hates it so much. :funny:

I do agree it's that type of story. But it's also done in 90% of the same framework as the original film. They all have their minds messed with to cause conflict, the farm functions as the carrier, the get spread to the winds, a new Avenger has to fight the Hulk, etc. They even have to come back together for the finale against the CGI army.

Warner Bros Discovery moving towards splitting company, CNBC reports

Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.O) is moving towards a potential breakup, CNBC reported on Thursday, as media companies explore options for their struggling cable TV businesses and sharpen focus on their faster-growing streaming and studios divisions.
A split would align WBD with Comcast, which is spinning off the fading NBCUniversal cable TV networks, including MSNBC and CNBC, to position itself for growth in the streaming era.

Analysts have long speculated about a break-up of WBD, whose assets include CNN, HBO and the coveted Warner Bros studio. Bank of America research analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich said last year that WBD's cable television assets are a "very logical partner" for Comcast's new spin-off company.

So you want to cut the introduction scene for the only woman on the team, one where she gets a solo action scene to herself that showcases her skills, so you can group her intro with Banner's intro (which focuses on the male hero in the scene and not the woman)?

WB being broken up and sold off would be such a blow

Especially if Comcast gets involved, get ready for Minions and Dominic Toretto to join the Justice League

lol. You want to argue feminism over the scene where they shove her boobs into the audience's face and ends with her picking up her heels? Are you being serious? :funny:

The Banner scene is already there and functions as an introduction far better for the spy lady. Her skills aren't hitting leg scissors on villains, especially aliens who can easily overpower her or any non-supercharged human. It's her spycraft. That's one of the big issues with Nat as a whole when written by Whedon or just in the Avengers flicks in general as opposed to her portray in TWS or Civil War. This is different from Black Widow where normal humans beating the crap out of other normal humans makes sense.

There is nothing more hilarious then Nat just popping off shots at aliens with her little glocks while bantering during the Battle of New York.
