The "News of the World" Hacking Scandal

He should resign because this was done under his watch & knowing him either came up with the idea or approved of it

I very highly doubt that. With the way Murdoch has been acting, he's coming off as an old man who is in a state of shock, denial, and over his head. Murdoch wants to control News Corp. with an iron fist and this scandal and the aftermath have pretty much slapped the concept of Murdoch's immense amount of control in the face. He was a king of the media world, and now he's come crashing back down to Earth. Reports are also coming in that Murdoch is actually quite devastated by the scandal. Piers Morgan has come out and said that Murdoch expected his editors to act within the law.

Just because his company owns a ****** news station and the man himself is an egotistical jackass, doesn't mean that he's a crook or evil.

Rupert's Murdoch's young wife took the women out.....lmao. She is actually the one who stopped her.
She slapped him and then fell over :lmao:

But seriously lucky it was only some shaving foam because if it was some serious lunatic with something worst a slap wouldn't do much. Attacking an 80 year old dude ain't cool though despite what you may think of him.

I do genuinely believe Rupert Murdoch didn't know Hacking was going on his son James on the other hand must of known I find it hard to believe he didn't. You don't start paying people off and closing your best selling British based newspaper if there isn't some sort of truth in the allegations.

Murdoch isn't evil or a crook but he certainly is manipulative and intrested in using his power and influence to get what he wants but thats hardly a unique trait among men in his position.

Since Robert Murdock exerts alot of power and control within his media empire, I found it hard to believe that he'd not have known any of these while the hacking was carried out over a long period of time. I think Murdock just had a couple of executives (like the former publisher of News of the World) be his sacrificial lambs and took the fall, while he feint surprise and denied any knowledgement of this scandal. Only Fox News and WSJ would make an attempt to try to convince the public that he had nothing to do with it.

I doubt he follows the day to day runnings of everyone of papers even one of his oldest, most successful and favorites like the News Of The World. Its his sons job to handle NewsCorp Europe and his the one who has been implicated the most at the top end of the company.

That's exactly what I'm thinking.

Actually it was "a" paper, in his company.....we will have to wait and see if this spreads to any of his other holdings...

It's called damage control. If Time Warner or Comcast were in the same position we'd probably be seeing Time Magazine and CNN defending Time Warner and MSNBC defending Comcast.

Yeah I know, its like 1% of News Corp if I recall correctly what he said.

But the way he acted and answered the questions was like he hadnt even heard of it... which I find quite amusing since it is was the biggest newspaper in the UK. He had to be a little interested in what the ran for stories I imagined.

What you see in the newspaper, what you see being written by your reporters is much different than knowing EXACTLY how the reporter got the story. Now, his son? That is a different story...

This hacking incident took place over several years, and far-reaching enough to have two of Britain's top police officers resigned in disgrace, and the end of one of UK's oldest newspapers. It's not a small, isolated incident, and I just don't buy the excuse that Murdock didn't know anything about it, even if he doesn't run the day-to-day operation for News Corp. This is something that is big enough to report to Robert Murdock before it is carried out.

I will be happy if James Murdoch (at bare minimum) is off'ed.

Media Matters desperately wants him to takeover and shake things up. If Media Matters wants that, that means he needs to go.

And they used the verbage "tortured and hung"?

Hannity and Gretchen publicly stated it. O'Reilly, Wallace, Palin, Rove, Gingrich and Beck all tried to be subtle about it but they certainly implied it.

No wait, I take that back. O'Reilly wished the President would send Drones after them, and bomb them.

Looks to me like this is the culture of news in the UK, and though I think it is wrong, and IT IS against the law, why would you ask your boss permission to do something that has been happening as the usual.

"Piers Morgan, who is now a celebrity anchor at CNN, who do not appear to have asked him any questions about phone hacking, is a former editor of the Daily Mirror," Mensch said. "He said in his book The Insider recently, and I quote, that that little trick of entering a standard four-digit code allows anyone to call that number and hear your messages.
"In that book he boasted that using that little trick enables him to win scoop of the year for a story about [England national soccer team manager] Sven-Goran Eriksson. So that is a former editor of the Daily Mirror being very open about his personal use of phone hacking…and indeed he is a former News of the World executive."

Pretty sad that people would stoop that low for a scoop.

Murdoch got hit by custard pie-welding comedian protester Jonnie Marbles.

Its way too easy for people to throw stuff at people in this country I remember when Lord Mandelson got green custard thrown at him and when deputy prime minister John Prescott got a egg tossed at him

At least people aren't using guns to express their displeasure.

I wonder how much of that is an act. It seemed to me that he was trying to pull off the befuddled old man look.

Everybody needs their "Scooter Libbey".

Exactly. Everytime he was asked if he knew somebody, he response was "What? Who? Huh?"

This is how Murdoch came off to me everytime he was asked a question (starts 1 minute in).

How did you people thought they were getting all the juicy stuff
C'mon now i'm pretty sure they're not the only one.

It could possibly be that reporters and editors where not telling James Murdoch what they were doing to get stories to protect him (plausible deniability) but after the News Of The World reporter and private investigator was sent to prison for hacking the phones of the royal family in 2006 you would think the Murdoch would be taking a serious look at what was going on at the paper over the time but apperantly not.

I personally think Murdoch's "shock" and frail performance at Parliament was....well a performance. Here is a man who's known that this scandal has been brewing for five or six years. Even if he didn't know when they started hacking, you don't think he investigated? Remember this is a guy who is overly hands-on to this day with his newspapers. He still designs front pages, pushes for content control and bought Dow Jones for several billion more than it was worth, just so he could have the WSJ.

There are clips of him being asked about the hacking scandal on Fox News in 2009 and he comes down on the anchor with the weight of an arrogant and assured patriarch that "I won't talk about that." Surely he may have noticed that his company was spending millions in pounds to pay off actors like Sienna Miller to avoid litigation in the hacking scandal.

I odn't think he initiated the scandal or knew when it started, but this guy sitting there dumbfounded and acting slightly senile when he runs a multi-billion multinational seemed more than a little bit staged to me.

Mort Zuckerman said on Morning Joe today that if Murdoch is found guilty of crimes in the U.K., then he will lose his television license here in the U.S.
