The only console still having to prove themselfs is the PS3, the other two are already a sucess.
The Wii, even if they don´t sell one more console, Nintendo is already a winner.
The 360, not only is going to surpass the Xbox, they are making a profit, which makes them a winner too.
The PS3 is going to lose for the PS2, which will make it a failure in Sony´s eyes, and they are the only ones to blame, because they were expecting it to sell no matter what.
Now, this is not t say that the PS3 sucks, but to show that it´s the only console going to lose against their previous one.

But i can seee the PS3 winning this generation, which is not really a victory to Sony or a defeat to Microsoft, because people tend to forget that, more powerful than the console itself is the brand, the reputation that the PS brand has, and that will only be defeated (if...) next generation, not before.
Before MS defeats Sony, they have to defeat the Playstation name, which is must more dificult.

By the way, if the Wii didn't sell anymore consoles, it would be a failure. It's sales right now are right around Gamecube's. It needs to meet demand and keep kicking ass. The Wii will win this generation if they overwork first party development and keep churning out cool gimmicks. We need to see Mario every two years, a Zelda in the works, some other nifty Wii accessory, etc.

All three console makers are making a profit now on their consoles. Nintendo is just making the most.

2007 - Sony PS3 sells 8.83 million, XBOX 360 sells 7.3 million

Today sony released its Q3 figures showing sales of 4.90 million units worldwide.

The total for 2007 is now 8.83 million units, taken from official Sony numbers

With all the negative news towards the PS3 in 2007, it just shows that at the end of the day, the numbers tell the real story.

Considering the PS3 didnt go on sale in the EU till 23rd March 2007, its quite an achievement for Sony to be ouselling the 360 by 1.5 million units in 2007

UPDATE: For all those that are complaining that the gamespot xbox 360 figures are not correct. Robbie Bach pointed out in the Microsoft CES keynote speech of January 2007 that they had sold 10.4 million units.
Forward to 6 minutes and 30 secs Robbie Bach clearly states they have sold 10.4 millions consoles as of 31st December 2006

Also, if nintendo have any common sense whatsoever they'll put another Mario game out this gen. The wii's performance in software sales is frankly pathetic and if they're going to keep up their current momentum they need to shed the novelty aspect of the console and start introducing more killer aps.

I'd also like to add myself to the list of people who bought a ps3 and sold it due to the extreme suckage of the games lineup.

It's currently the best (read: only one that's available for a reasonable price, doesn't freeze up on many new releases, and won't need replacing in 6 months time ) blu-ray player and I just can't go back to SD

Of course the problem with this being an argument against ps3 unit sales is that once a ps3 is sold it will probably still remain active. If someone sells it on Ebay, it's gonna get used by the person who buys it.

the only way this could be seen as an indication that ps3 sales aren't as high as they seem would be if gamestops accross the country were buying the things and failing to sell them on (a stock-pile in the back room, etc)

So really units sold are units sold

This argument can equally be turned on the 360 with the suggestion that a reasonable number of people have bought upwards of 2-3 consoles after they RROD'd

Since this would result in a console sitting in the trash/salvaged for spares this does actually take the unit out of circulation meaning that the total number of 360s still in use could be as low as 75% of total sales

This can also be applied to the wii, software sales suck because

a) the lineup is nearly as bad as the ps3's
b) many people only buy it for wii sports
c) many people buy it for their kids because it's the "must have" when in reality their kids would probably have been happier with an xbox 360 and halo 3
d) many people (as much as 60% of japanese owners according to a survey done by I believe kotaku a while ago) buy it, play with it for a bit and find the novelty wears off

Just selling the console is not enough, you have to make sure it's in constant use otherwise it's jhust another unit padding total sales. This actually serves to hurt the console from a marketing perspective as it just forces the average attach rate down (as has been the case with the ps3 and blu-ray)

Good news for Sony. After a year of hearing how the PS3 was doing abysmal, and how Sony was going down the toilet and doing bad buisness overall, we find out the PS3 actually sold more units last year worldwide than the 360, and that Sony is turning a profit on the PS3 finally.

I believe your article, but just to make sure I googled it. Found a similar post in some PS3 forums (ya I know, PS3 forums giving sketchy PS3 news), but the guy linked a good 5-7 other articles, the numbers do indeed add up. With PS3 having a good line up this year the gap may close even more, especially with PS3 finally starting to pick up some in Japan.
