The "Next Harry Potter"?

I might be persecuted for saying this, but it's Twilight. What made Harry Potter big was not the movies or the subject matter or the demographic, but the fact that the books were a blockbuster franchise on the scale of major motion pictures. They were everywhere before the movies, with a huge following. The movies struck while the iron was hot. Twilight is the exact same thing. It already is the next Harry Potter.

And you guys are discounting a franchise that has made 1.7bil so far because the movies aren't good. Well, I've said what I've had to say and thats all I'm going to say for now.

And you are counting box office reciepts when MUCH more matters. It goes far beyond the money, but the appeal. If you want to bring up the numbers let's look at the numbers.

Transformers 2 made over $100 Million more both domestic and worldwide than the highest grossing Twilight film and close to $200 Million more than the last Twilight film. So does that now mean that Transformers is the next Harry Potter? I have never ever seen someone try to make such a crazy claim. You want to continue looking at the numbers? The three Twilight films have made 1.7 Billion thus far. The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy made 2.7 Billion. One billion more. So why aren't you claiming that Pirates and Transformers are the next Harry Potter franchise, they have factually brought in more money:dry:

As for the books you again have to realize the appeal factor. You fail to realize that 99% of Twilight's fanbase are teenage girls and a few renegade older women who refuse to grow up:dry:. Twilight's midnight book releases and conventions have no men there, no males, have no old people there. How many Indians are crazy about Twilight? How many black people are cookoo for Edward and Bella? How popular is Twilight in Asia? In Cuba? In Mexico? In Germany? In Scotland? In France? How many people in Bulgaria go crazy for Stephanie Meyers. Harry Potter draws in everyone. Harry Potter is not discriminatory at all, it has appealed to every single group you can possibly think of with maybe the exception of a couple of right wing nuts who think all kids will turn to witches.

These are matters of undeniable fact- Jor El.

I doubt there will be a "new Harry Pooter". No books in this genre have been nearly as popular as the Harry Potter-books. At some point I'm sure there will be a new phenomenon, but it probably will be something different, like the Twilight-novels
Just to clarify.
Being the next Harry Potter doesnt mean you have to gross almost a billion dollars with 1 movie

and I don't think Twilight is. Its successful, there is no denying that. It is world known by multiple races, but I think HP is more accepted. Alot of times you hear about Twilight people are cracking jokes or saying how bad it is. Twilight is a phenom, but as far as the next Harry Potter? I dont think so

I'm not trying to speak to the quality or demographics. In those two respects, Twilight is most certainly not the next Harry Potter. But those movies are wildly successful, with rabid fans, all from an equally block-busting book series. Movie execs looking for the "next Harry Potter" are looking for exactly what they found in Twilight. Other attempts have been from book series that are surely beloved, but not so wildly popular. That's why things like The Golden Compass, Spiderwick Chronicles, etc have tanked as films. My advice to look for the next Harry Potter: pay more attention to the book world than the movie world. That will be where you see it.

Let's all have kids and make them read Shazam. Then get a Shazam movie made. So Shazam could be the new Harry Potter. SHAZAM!

Twilight will be forgotten as soon as the next films are out. They are even aping Harry potter by splitting the last film in two. How ridiculous. Does anyone really think those books will stand the test of time? I read only a little of the first one and tried not to barf. Meyers makes Charlaine Harris look like the greatest literary force since Shakespeare. There is no good plotting at all...it's just two characters going back talking about romance and really lame vampirism. Del Toro and Hogan said it right, if you are Mormon and can't even properly write about vampires because your forbidden then don't sap it down, get the **** out of the genre. Don't even get started on her awful writing, every character "tightens their eyes" whatever that means.

Rowling's plotting is so brilliant, so masterful. Every plot point matters to the overall story, her revelations are the exact opposite of contrived, and mostly, she had everything planned up ahead so well. I recently read Year 1 and noticed that Sirius Black is mentioned and Ron also says that scabbers has been in the family for a decade and that he's missing a toe. Then in the third it is revealed that he's wormtail. Just a small example of how well she had everything planned out and brilliantly foreshadowed. She's not so good on romance but she knows how to weave a story together like no one else.

I agree with everything you said here.

YES! :woot:

Harry Potter movies are successful because the books are successful. So its not easy to discover a new saga thats already known from the public and transform it to movies.

One tv show i always thought it would translate really well to american audiences was Full Metal Alchemist.

Twilight movies are much cheaper, and i think the next harry potter, in least in the theme and british setting could be, not magic, not sci fy, maibe a little, Young Bond

I don't think Young Bond would catch on as much as we think. I would love to see movies made out of those books. I haven't read the others but I read the first and loved it. It was very cool.

"The next Harry Potter"? That's a tough one. There are many books and TV shows about ordinary kids being thrown into extraordinary situations, but many of them lack the rabid fanbase that the Harry Potter novels have. Thus the movie adaptations likely won't have as universal of an appeal. People have mentioned Twilight as being already the next Harry Potter. I disagree. Twilight's fanbase, while as rabid as Harry Potter's, is not nearly as universal as HP's. Kindergarten children go out dressed as Harry, Ron, and Hermione every Halloween. No one goes out as Edward, Jacob, and Bella.

While I would love to see a live action adaptation of the old Dungeons & Dragons cartoon, which is very Harry Potter-esque in theme, I highly doubt that it will become the cinematic juggernaught that HP has become. The only thing I can think of that has anywhere near the universal appeal of Harry Potter that is currently in the works is the remake/reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. It has a fairly universal appeal from the popularity of the TV show, plus the comic books, the novels, even the original movie has its following. Plus it has the similar theme of ordinary kids thrown into extraordinary situations.

Other than that, I think the only way we'll know what the "next Harry Potter" will be is by watching pop culture. Any series of books, comics, or TV serial that has a theme of kids being thrown into extraordinary situations that becomes hugely popular with a fairly universal appeal, that will be the next "Harry Potter".

Nobody dresses up as anybody from Twilight for Halloween. A ton of people dress up as characters from Harry Potter. Harry Potter books are leaps and bounds ahead of the Twilight books in sales and the Harry Potter movies receive better critical response. Not to mention, Harry Potter reaches a much wider audience. So no, Twilight is not the next Harry Potter.

I don't really see anything as the next Harry Potter right now. Twilight is sub par in every aspect. It may make a lot of money, but it will never reach Harry Potter status.

over 30 years later and we still don't even have the next "Star Wars"...though some may argue Pirates.

Thing about Pirates is that it is popular, but it's only sort of momentarily fun. I haven't seen Pirates of the Caribbean fansites, obsessives who know everything about the universe, Pirates conventions, etc. Pirates is something you watch and then get over it after that weekend. Potter and Star Wars are things that stay with you, things you can go on a message board and debate about forever. Obsessives who know every little fact and detail about the world and every character. Things like that are incredibly rare. Twilight is awful but I can give it credit in that department.

to know if you have a star wars you will need to give every big franchise 20 years.

or do oyu think that everyone in the 80's knew that SW was going to be so huge in the 90's and over 2000?

Have you even seen the Twilight films? (I've seen the first two)

But when they get near the ending at the vampire coliseum all of the vampires are dressed in costumes and regal cloaks.

Star Wars was a massive phenomenon in the late 70s and mid-80s alone. It had already spawned an EU and millions upon millions of devoted and obsessive fans of all age.

Not impossible, just far more difficult. Pop in some vampire fangs, put pale makeup on to look like you can't tan, add some body glitter to "sparkle like diamonds in the sunlight", and if you can afford them some red contact lenses. There you go, a Twilight vampire. Then use wigs, wardrobe, etc to make yourself look like specific characters from the books/movies. But nobody wants to take the time and effort to do that. They will, however, sit down at a sewing maching and make themselves a Hogwarts school uniform, put on a pair of taped together glasses, and draw a lightning bolt scar on their forehead with a red magic marker to dress as Harry Potter. Of course it would probably be simpler to just go to the costume store and buy a Harry Potter costume, but when I was a kid my mom used to sew all of my Halloween costumes for me.

My point is, Harry Potter is popular enough with a wide enough audience for people to actually make the attempt. Twilight isn't. People dress as characters from Buffy for Halloween, never Twilight. Again, difficult to do but not impossible. A girl can wear a cheer leader costume, add some vampire slaying accessories (cross, wooden stake, garlic, crossbow, etc) and there you have Buffy (or Cordelia if the girl's a brunette). They can dress as Dark Willow (Season 6 finale) or Vampire Willow (Season 3), The Master, or any number of villains from the show. Many fans make the effort to do this every Halloween. Twilight fans don't. And the reason is that Twilight just doesn't appeal to as wide of a fanbase or reach as broad of a market as Harry Potter, or even Buffy. Therefore Twilight isn't, and never will be, the "next Harry Potter".

Exactly...the thing about not seeing anyone dress up like Twilight vampires actually brings up another terrific point as well.

The most famous vampires in the Twilight movies are the guys and Twilight has little appeal to teenage boys or most guys. That is why you will never see many Edwards for Halloween. Unless a girl makes her boyfriend dress up lol

I didn't realize that those are the only clothes that Harry Potter wears:dry: Watch this October...see how many adults and kids dress up as people from Harry Potter and see how many people dress up as someone from Twilight. I guess someone could go as Jacob and all that they would need to do is take off their shirt:o

I see kids out in Iron Man costumes...not Tony Stark costumes. That is like saying do you see kids dressing up as Harry Potter in muggle clothes or Harry Potter in wizard robes....:dry::dry::dry: What an idiotic comparison.

Narnia's films aren't very good. Nor as popular.

but the point is that in twilight they wear nornal clothes. so how can they dress up like the characters from the movie?

They make costumes for the robes of Hogwarts of the Houses for kids to wear. Okay? This is a stupid debate.

I've already proven you wrong because you speak on the subject but apparently have never even seen the movies. When they get to the European vampire town or wherever it is they travel in the last act, all of the vampires are wearing unique costuming. It's even evident in the posters.
