the only problem was the writing... everything else i think they did to the best of their abilities including shyamalans directing.

the writing was so bad it affected the actors, story, characters, and even believability of the vfx..
the action was not that good either

the earth village scene was laughable

the movie imo also felt very small in scale

the pacing was also very off

it took them 40 minutes to get to the NWT when they get to the NWT in the cartoon in like episode 11 or 12

it felt so rushed

Guys, I'm actually writing a reboot for the 1st film right now. I'm so glad this thread even exists haha. It's not in script form, it's a basic treatment (but very long). I basically give a rundown of each scene in each paragraph. It's still very much follows the 1st season, but I've changed things/added new things to it. I've tried making it feel more organic (instead of just a check list of scenes/episodes which is what a lot of these adaptations feel like). I'm including references of specific events from the other 2 seasons in season 1.

I'm really envisioning it like this as I write :
It's on the scale of Lord of the Rings, but has the beautiful imagery of Hero, and borrows the humor of Jack Sparrow.

There was very little character portrayed with the actors in M.Night's crapfest. I've actually given Aang an edge in my film; he's a trouble-making kid, who weilds an incredible amount of power. But not unlikeable. He gets himself into trouble, but he plays it off as more of a game (think Peter Pan). Because fundamentally, he is just a kid. He does realize his mistakes, but he can't help it. I did it this way so he can begin as an immature, yet powerful kid in the 1st film, then mature into the wise and powerful Avatar by the 3rd.

And Zuko is just badass. I feel the best way to portray him is as a completely obsessed and violent villain. I want him to be just downright evil. In order for his change to have the emotional punch it deserves, the guy needs to start out rotten. Very little whining from him in my version. I've also changed the reveal of the Blue Spirit. I figured to keep his identity a secret until the end of the 2nd movie.............(if you've seen the 2nd season, then you'd know how much better that works for the character and the desicions he's faced with).

I doubt it will ever get made. Or should I say, I doubt MY version will ever get made, but I like writing it and struggeling to find out what to leave in and what to leave out. I guess it's just good writing practice.
That sounds great, Lord of the Rings was very inspired by the European culture, that's why we don't see any black person there, while Avatar: The Last Airbender was inspired by Asian culture, that's why we shouldn't see any arabian or american person there :o
I must say that while most people are saying this was Hallywood's racism, it was in fact all Shyalaman's fault

The Last Airbender sucked, it was really bad, but there might a sequel, and if that happens Shyalaman will probably be involved.
The original tv series was really great and while the entire series formed a great trilogy, even book 2 felt like the empire strikes back, but i think they should remake the film series as 6 films, 2 hours each, because each season has 20 episodes and you have to pick the 6 most important episodes and that's difficult to do when each episode introduces important chararacters and elements to the story.
So if there were 6 films you could divide the episodes in 6 parts, making each film based on 10 episodes and so you could shoose the best 6 out of there.
The actors should be good, remember harry potter when they were just kids and knew how to act, that's exactly how it should be like.
Film one should also seem to act as a stand alone film, zuko would be the villain while Zhao doesn't appear that much.
As for the elements they should take, the first 2 episodes are a must, then there should be more drama with when Ang discovers that the other airbenders are dead with elements from the 3rd episode.
The episodes "The Warriors of Kyoshi", "The King of Omashu" "Imprisoned", and "Jet" could serve as the middle but mixing them all together wich means Bumi should show his identity without making games, soka trains with the kyoshis and katara is imprisioned at the same time, with the ending of Jet also serving as the begining of the last part of the film, this would be particularly based on the winter solestice part 1 and 2.
Zuko should in the end be put unconshious by Ang as people could see this also as a stand alone, since in the first star wars Darth Vader's ship is hit and after the death star is destroided some thought he could have died until empire strikes back came, zuko's duality could be aluded in the first film while the 2nd could make him more a anti hero and becoming the blue spirit.
So what do you guys say, another shyalaman movie, a reboot as another trilogy, a reboot as 6 films or more, or absolutelly nothing, what do you boys and girls want the next Avatar: The Last Airbender films to be?

As much as I'd like to see a reboot, I think it's best to leave the show as it is. Besides, we've got The Legend of Korra sequel series coming anyway. Oh, and I talked to Will Smith about this, and this is what he said:

Thing is though, M Night's movie wasn't very realistic or dark by any means...it just wasn't FUN. It actually had some really nice cinematography, specifically dealing with the environments...but everyone so damn serious the whole time. There was too much angst, melodrama, and mundane acting that it makes me wonder what M. Night was seeing when he said he watched the cartoons with his kids. It also makes me wonder how M. Night deals with his OWN kids.....yeesh!

I hear you. When I read all those interviews he had before the film came out (with his dismissal of the comedic/light hearted elements and Star Wars/LOTR comparisons) and then finally watched it, I was left wondering what did he see while watching the show (especially with his kids). :funny:

Too me what they should do is a film to tie in the two shows together and show what happens after wards like Aang searching for other airbenders and rediscovering the flying bison and lemurs and have Zuko search for his mother then have a new villain that be the start of some of the elements from Koraa show to show the start of the that series.

My teacher's husband works for M night shaymalan and she said they had to cut out the Kyoshi warriors becuase of timeing. She also said they tried to stick as close as possible but sadly that didnt succeed well.

The only way to make a franchise out of this is to do a full reboot and completely ignore the movie. Each book should be split up into at least 2 movies and the original creators should be a part of the production at all times and get someone who can respect the series.
I was so hyped by the trailers for this movie and went out of the cinema so disappointed, I don't understand how you can screw up something so badly.

When the creator of a certain franchise that is going to have a movie adaptation is still alive, he should allways be let help with the creation of the adaptaion

Exactly

The thing is the the co-creators of the show was happy with the choice of the director and vision and I bet they are now regretting that decision.

What gets me is the bad choices of deleting important plot element within the myth of the series like the White Lotus and their of the earth kingdom they showed in the film instead of King Bumi which they could have done and shown the epicness of the Earth Kingdom but we got the Mud Kingdom instead.

Also I could not stand the worst choice that they made to change the names of the characters and their band pronunciation!

Not really, they were contacted yes, but they didn't give an opinion of the film until now because they want fans to make their oun mind and not aprove or disaprove something if the creators say. And they had an idea that the movie was going to be bad as shoun in the poster of that humurous theatre that showed what happened until then, the poster only had negative reviews

The problem with The Last Airbender is that M. Night, was a director with a good vision and good intentions but was executed poorly because this genre just doesn't fall in his niche.

He's done nothing but thrillers and suspense movies his whole career. This is a action/fantasy/martial arts movie. He has never crossed into this genre. So I wasn't surprised the movie came out the way it did. Which is why the movie was so dark, and serious and because of that, the seriousness of this movie was laughable.

That Earthbending scene was serious yet hilarious and embarrassing.... them benders was serious when they danced, but you couldn't help but laugh when you see a little boulder just float away towards the firebenders so slowly...

The only thing I liked was Aang's story arc about letting his emotions flow like water which linked to his water bending. And the beautiful scene and music at the climax.

Other than that the movie was doomed from the start. By letting M. Night get his hands on it. This is guy with ego of being original with his movies, he's not the director for adaptations

What the movie needed was a director with balls to do the unexpected. **** Hollywood's bs standards. Make a movie that honors the culture Avatar embraced throughout the series.

It's more than just a fantasy and martial artists movie. And unless the director sees that I don't see this movie being successful.

I didn't understand the whole emotions stuff. It really made no sense to me when compared to what we saw in the show. It just sounded like standard Hollywood angst bs for the sake of "drama."

Well, I think M. Night do the unexpected: make a bad Airbender film.

It made sense to me. Aang..... or let me say.. Uung felt guilty for the death of his master and his fellow Airbenders. He was going through a crap load of emotions.

It made sense these emotions alter his focus with his bending thus he couldn't harvest the true power within him.

Yeah its pretty standard Hollywood bs, but it was still effective imo

There were so many flaws with The Last Airbender, but for me, they failed to capture essential character elements.

In the toon Ang was vibrant, joyful and mischeivious. They did not portray that part of his personality well and the film lacked the humor that they did so perfectly in the series. Don't even get me started on how badly they failed with Sokka.

It was the characters interaction with their world and each other that drove the series. Over the course of the first season that Ang realized how the world suffered and how much he was really needed but it was his realtionship with Sokka and Kitara that grounded him. I didn't get the sense the film respected that aspect of the series.

The filmmakers could not effectively interpret the characters that developed over an entire season in the anime into a 2hr movie.

That AND the whitewashing of the main characters didn't help.

The movie sucked for all those reasons above. But how could M. Night look at the dailies or edits and not see how horrible the acting was? And the bending was all incorrect. The actors are doing this akward dance and then the element moves afterwards? The element is supposed to move WITH the bender. And it takes 6 earthbenders to dance and then move ONE stone? Really? Appa and Momo didn't even do anything.

Just terrible in every sense of the word.

The only thing I'll give credit to is the costumes and sets were spot on.

A big annoyance for me was that Aang actually had full control of his Avatar form. He's not suppose to at the end of Book 1, he's suppose to be afraid that he'll lose control and kill everyone against him. But what conflict is there if Aang can fully control his powers and drop a tsunami on you.

Aang should've killed some of the fire nation warriors or at least attempted to until he was brought out of his trance.

they dropped the ball on characters they had no family element

appa should of been a very close friend but instead was nothing more than a flying car

Kind of sad when i look back this film has so much potential to take over where harry potter left - and should of been the next Harry Potter

even had similar characters in a way

Chosen One Hero - Harry - Aang
Comedic friend - Ron - Sokka
Strong headed female - Mermoine - Katara
Anti Hero Young Villain - Draco - Zuko
Evil #1 Villain - Voldemort - Ozai

and both were high on lots of fantasy elements and both the 3 main good guys were built as a family

so sad This film got so much wrong when they had the perfect template to look at

not as huge of a fan base as potter but TLA had a big fanbase

even with a bad word of mouth by public and critics alike it still made over 300 million WW

so it had an audience

M Night ruined a potential awesome franchise

nearly 2 years later and i am still angry and the potential lost

Naruto also reminds me of Harry Potter:

A main Trio, kids with powers, snake guy

Choosen Hero/ Comic relief - Harry/Ron - Naruto
strong headed female - Hermione - Sakura
Anti Hero Young Villain - Draco - Sasuke
Snake Guy Villain that wants imortality - Voldemort - Orochimaru
Villain that has an interest for the main hero - Voldemort - Tobi
Master type - Dumbledor - with Naruto there are some 3 guys to fill that role, the 3rd hokage, kakashi and Jiraia

There you go, if Last Airbender can't fill Harry Potter's role then there's this similar, Japanese culture franchise

There are some similarities, the chosen hero, the girl with common sense, and the comic relief. Though Ang was a lot more likable than Harry. But Harry was an incredibly boring character. Zuko is also a much more interesting character than Malfoy. Malfoy was actually pretty pathetic by the end. He ultimately became good due to failure, not redemption. Avatar certainly has a lot more going for it when it comes to characters. Avatar as in the show, not the godawful movie. Only really Ozai was underdeveloped.

I think if they want to make a new TLA movie, they should reboot it and give it to another studio who would take better care of it than FOX has done. However, given its massive failure at the BO, I don't think they should even contemplate rebooting it unless at least a decade later, so the audience's memory will fade regarding that awful attempt to adapt Avatar to the screen.

^Paramount made TLA not Fox

imo it is not too much of a failure at BO imo with how bad the film was and the horrid reviews and it being m night coming off bad films like lady in the water and the happening and it still made like 320 million WW means it had an audience who wanted to come
