Yeah, Queensryche are a bit pretentious, it's true, but damn if they don't have some amazing musical chops to back it up. They really aren't very obscure, either. To this day, it's hard to turn on a classic rock radio station without hearing that damned "Silent Lucidity".

Yeah, PLAS brought them up earlier in the thread. Like I said to him, I just remember hearing "No Tellin' Lies" and thinking "WTF is this crap?". I believe those guys are actually from the Long Island/Jersey area if I'm not mistaken.

No Tellin Lies is one of their biggies but it never did anything for me either. My fave track of theirs is probably Tell Me What You Want.

He hung out and drank a lot after and was cool, though I can't remember the band's name.

Tygerz(sometimes s) of Pan Tang were hair metal before hair metal they bridged the gap between NWOBHM with bands like Saxon and the perms that followed. They were awesome.

Campbell is a hell of a guitarist but damn if he didn't have a hard time finding a permanent band for his talents over the years until he finally joined up with Def Leppard. Riverdogs was a bit of an underwhelming side project for him.

Today's obscure 80's hair band is Baton Rouge. They actually did hail from Louisiana so at least they had some right to use the name. Their first album didn't technically get released until 1990, but it definitely fit with the hard rock flavors of the late 80's. Their sound was very bluesy and hard driving, and singer Kelly Keeling had a very raw and powerful voice that bore a passing resemblance to some of Sammy Hagar's more soulful vocal work. They didn't do anything real groundbreaking, but they were just a real solid blues-based hard rock band. The members have since gone on to other gigs, most notably Keeling who was the frontman for Foreigner for a time before their current frontman Kelly Hansen (a former hair band butt-rocker in his own right, having cut his teeth in the one hit wonder band "Hurricane") filled the spot. I still really enjoy the "Shake Your Soul" album quite a bit, but their other albums didn't really do as much for me.

Today's 80's burnout hair band is Tyketto. Tyketto came into the hair metal scene at the end of the 80's and were one of many bands that were killed dead by the grunge juggernaut. Their Wikipedia entry kind of says it all:

Tyketto were an American heavy rock band of the 1990s who never achieved the success they felt they deserved. The group was put together in 1987 by former Waysted vocalist Danny Vaughn. Brooke St James (Guitar), Jimi Kennedy (Bass) and Micheal Clayton (Drums) completed the lineup.

By 1990 the band had signed to Geffen Records, and released their debut album "Don't Come Easy". Musically, it was somewhere between Whitesnake and Bon Jovi, with Tyketto opening for the former on many bills. However, the rise of the 'grunge' sound in 1991 saw Tyketto's hopes of the big breakthrough begin to recede. Jimi left the band and was replaced by Jamie Scott. Their second album was rejected by Geffen and finally emerged in 1994 under the title "Strength In Numbers" on CMC in the USA and Music for Nations elsewhere in the world.

The following year Vaughn left the band to look after his wife, who had developed cancer, and was replaced by former Tall Stories vocalist Steve Augeri. Tyketto's sound began to move more towards a Journey-type style (Augeri would later become lead vocalist for Journey), and this line-up released "Shine" in 1995, again on CMC / Music for Nations. However, dwindling audiences and the changing landscape of the rock industry saw the band disband in 1996, releasing "Take Out & Served Up Live" as a swansong, having never really broken through. The various band members went onto other projects, most notably Danny, Micheal and Jamie would reunite in Vaughn

In 2004 Tyketto reformed for a reunion tour with the full original lineup and were supported by UK Rock Band Deadline and Florida Rock Band Teer.

So, today, a lesser known band of very talented musicians that is still one of my alltime favorites from that era: House Of Lords.

This band was the brainchild of Angel and Giufria keyboardist Greg Giufria and Giufria guitarist Lanny Cordola. They were actually gearing up for another Giufria album but Gene Simmons talked them into going with this band after hearing some of their demo material, which was quite a bit heavier than the Giufria material. He subsequently signed them as the first act on his new personal label, which had a distribution deal with BMG.

The band went through several line-up changes and dumped their original singer because he just wasn't right for the project according to Simmons who heavily lobbied for his replacement. They then got hooked up with fomer L.A. Rocks vocalist James Christian (one of the best and most underrated vocalists in rock, IMHO) who gave the group the voice they were looking for. They released quite a few albums, all of them featuring some outstanding musicanship and songwriting, but their biggest hit probably came from a cover of Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home" on the "Sahara" album. They broke up for awhile and went through a lot of lineup changes but they're back together (minus founding member Giufria) and have a new album out that's excellent. I believe they may even be touring, too. At any rate, this is definitely a band worth checking out if you enjoy this kind of music.
