The Obscure Music Thread

check out any and all of these bands... though some i wouldn't really call "obscure"...

the dirtbombs
oblivians
guitar wolf (not obscure in japan..but mostly obscure in north america)
the 5, 6, 7, 8s (see above..though their appearance/music in kill bill kinda makes them no longer obscure)
supersnazz (japan rock and roll girl style)
los hermanos (sappy stuff)
i shot cyrus (not sappy...at all....fast hc the way it should be)

also my roommates old band "the best" rules/ruled (havn't heard them since he quit). i think they may have a myspace.

They Might Be Giants?
I know they were popular in the 90s, but when I ask people if they heard of them they say no.

If not, Job for a Cowboy.

I would say that TMBG is obscure, moreso depending on where you go. I believe they have less of an audience south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Also:

Richard Thompson - British folk. He used to play with Fairport Convention (in the 60s, I'm guessing?) and then with his wife Linda in the 60s-80s. They split up and they've both had their own fairly successful solo careers. I saw him live in Toronto last October (in a church). It was just him on guitar/vocals and a bass player, but they sounded almost like a full band.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Albums: [as Richard & Linda Thompson] Shoot Out The Lights, Pour Down Like Silver
[solo] Action-Packed!: The Best Of The Capitol Years

Super Furry Animals, My Bloody Valentine (not that obscure in some circles), The Old 97's, Eels, The Elected and Tilly and the Wall all come to mind.

Ps. props to the guy who mentioned The Dissociatives. Daniel Johns owns my soul.

I like noise and neoclassical among other things. There is a lot of good stuff coming out of Iceland.

Try Efterklang.

If you want to talk a little more sub mainstream, Tricky, from Bristol England.

Stephen Fearing - folk with a bit of rock mixed in. Canadian.
Album - Industrial Lullaby

X - Los Angeles punk band from the 80s. Female lead singer, Exene Cervenka.
Albums: Los Angeles, Wild Gift

Anything by Minus The Bear, Murder By Death, Dredg, Facing New York. All great bands and all great music.

Not that obscure, I suppose (depends on what music you're into):

Gang Of Four - British punk from the 70s with a bit of funk mixed. Political stuff, sort of Rage Against The Machine-ish.
Album: Entertainment!

Warren Zevon - 70s/80s. Can't really describe it. Rock, I guess.
Album: A Quiet Normal Life - The Best Of Warren Zevon

Meat Puppets - 80s Punk with a bit of country mixed in.
Album: Meat Puppets II

I like Warren Zevon, he is kind of obscure.

Here are some of the things I listen to that I consider obscure

Aphex Twin
Boards of Canada
Tricky
Black Ox Orkestar
Do May Say Think
Fly Pan Am
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Hangedup
Isis
Mowai
Monade
Efterklang
Múm
Sigur-Rós
Stereolab
Kira Kira
Talking Heads
Tortoise
Björk
Phillipe Katerine
Beck
Kaki King
Grandaddy
Mindless Self Indulgence
The New Pornographers
Frank Zappa

There is a local punk rock band called "The Killer Shoes". They are so awesome.

Mofro - Florida blues/soul band...they're awesome.
Albums: Blackwater, Lochloosa

I suppose you could put the Mars Volta in this category as well.

 yeah, I guess you don't hear enough of them in the mainstream.

Haha, do you have some personal vendetta against The Mars Volta or something? Everytime I see a music thread where they are mentioned you are always right there to pounce. Did they kill your uncle or something?

they killed music with their awful quasi-santana guitars, and cedric kills my IQ with his horrible writting (just because it makes no sense doesn't make it good) to be fair I gave them a chance at first, but frances the mute made me completely hate them.

that and my dead uncle.

I need to hear some more Mars Volta. I've heard The Widow and something else, and I liked both.

The Mars Volta = meh. I saw them live...and thier set was extremely boring. They started off well, but then they played this like...18 minute song that sounded like noise. It was at the Continental Airlines Arene, and almost the whole crowd walked out during their set to get food. I've never seen the outer halls so crowded there, and I've been to several big shows there.

Main thing here is that they were boring. I understand what they were going for, but it didn't work out well. Even a few of my friends who are huge fans were like...bored.

I hear the mars volta where complicit in the slaughter of the jews during the ruling of nazi party in Germany.
