The Official Avengers Thread (Heroic Age Bendis/JRJR)

You know to me, i think its more Dean White's coloring and Klaus Jansen's inking that ruining the art more than the actual pencils itself. One thing about JrJr, is that his work can either be amplified by a good colorist or brought down tremendously by a mediocre one. I was reading an old issue of Amazing Spiderman, one of the JMS issues, and JrJr's art looks soooo much different because of Scott Hanna's coloring. Much more vibrant than his recent collaborator Dean White. I dunno, thats just me.
I agree completely. The colorist is hugely important for JR Jr.'s art. Compare Avengers to Eternals and then weep that they didn't employ Matt Hollingsworth for the former, as well.

Inking and Coloring are so important to comics in general; they're unsung heroes, but sometimes it makes the book...Imagine Brubaker's cap colored in pastels...

Yeah, inking especially. The only truly distinctive inkers I can think of off the top of my head are Klaus Janson for his very scratchy, rough style, and Tom Palmer, whose inking often overpowered a lot of the pencilers' work. Compare Steve Epting's work on his Palmer-inked Avengers issues to anything he drew that Palmer didn't ink and a few comics where Palmer inked other pencilers' work, and you'll notice that Palmer's hand is very evident.

Honestly Corp, I don't think removing Bendis from the Avengers books would make the sales go down. The Avengers are more popular than ever & if you keep Iron Man, Cap, Thor & Spidey (maybe Wolvie) on the covers, the sales will remain good.

I'd like to believe that, but unfortunately a lot more people than you'd think genuinely enjoy Bendis' writing. No one writes quite like him, so the whole tone of the series would shift if he left and it would then be a question of whether those Bendis fans would even bother to try the series without him, let alone get used to the new tone.

I would love to see Bendis leave. I'm waiting for him to make Kang say "What's up with that!" or something stupid and out of character.

I don't buy that Brian Bendis is such a massive draw in and of himself. The only people who know his name are already comic fans, and while I consider their judgment questionable if they honestly enjoy his writing on a regular basis, I do also believe that they'd be willing to give another writer a chance on an Avengers title if Marvel would push it like they do the Bendis books. I know this was brought up a few pages ago, but I think one of the biggest reasons Dan Slott's run on "Mighty Avengers" didn't sell as well as "New Avengers" did was because Marvel barely promoted it.

Take the core book, keep putting Spidey and Wolverine on the cover if you really feel it's important, and actually act like you want people to know it exists, but replace Bendis with another writer (Slott, Fraction, Brubaker), and it'll continue to sell well.

Me personally, I'm stuck. I'll read anything Avengers. I hung in there during the crap times and won't let Bendis chase me away no matter how loose the continuity is or how cringe worthy the dialogue is.

For me, being a dedicated Avengers fan myself, I really tried to give Bendis a chance. Hell, I still do every now and then. The period right after "Civil War", where Leinil Yu was doing the art, I thought was fantastic, and the first issues of the new "Avengers" and "New Avengers" series were alright (though the main one slipped a bit going into the second issue). But ultimately, I just can't stay compelled by his writing. His dedication to uber-decompression, all the talking heads, and the poor characterization for all but a few characters just frustrates me.

I make no secret about how much I loved Dan Slott's run on "Mighty Avengers", because that was an actual Avengers run, with consistent characterization and Avengers actually being Earth's Mightiest Heroes. And so far, I'm pretty enthusiastic about Ed Brubaker's "Secret Avengers" for basically the same reason (though I'm told the second issue is a bit slow).

Wolverine isn't even a big sell anymore.

Seriously, reading this issue was painful. So many things wrong with. Stark's dialogue was beyond cringe worthy. It was grind your teeth worthy. Bucky, an ex intelligence agent and brilliantly trained soldier doesn't research anything in the Avengers history? He doesn't know who friggin Kang is? One of the Avengers greatest enemies? Wonder Man, who quit the Avengers because violence begets violence does what? Uses violence against them.

Seriously Bendis you are so much fail at this point.

I want to see how much more of the "Next Avengers" we see. I'm kinda curious how Bendis will write them. Hopefully it's a bit better than what we saw of them in the movie.

That being said, I'll keep this title on my list. It's good stuff.

I wish to god, Romita would get another colorist for his stuff. Dean white just isnt doing it. His colors are too plain and dull imo. He needs to get back with Scott Hanna again! Imagine if Avengers looked like this:

EXACTLY.

Kang is arguably THE avengers villain. And they have no idea who he is!

Isn't Hanna an inker?

Ah crap your right. Well i feel stupid. So i guess Romita colored his own pencils on his ASM run then. In that case i can see why he's havin Dean White color his stuff.

I don't think he colored his own art on ASM. They just don't list the colorist on the cover. Marvel's only listed creators on the cover for the past ten years or so, and I've only ever seen them do so for the writer(s), penciler(s), and inker(s).

They usually only show the whole team if it's a big event. Although when Brand New Day started, they had an issue or two I think, with all the people. For a while they were dubbed "Team Civil War"

Fred Van Lente on an Avengers book?

It’s looking like Marvel is putting in one more star in its Avengers constellation, as it looks like Fred Van Lente might be taking on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.“So it’s official,” Van Lente wrote on Twitter today. “I’m writing an AVENGERS book.”

That’s not all he’s writing, either — he’s a member of the Amazing Spider-Man Webheads, he’s co-writing Incredible Hercules/Prince of Power/The Chaos War with Greg Pak, he’s working on Iron Man Legacy, the Halo comic and Marvel Zombies 5…but here’s what I’m curious about with this — what does this mean for Van Lente, and Marvel’s catalog of books? I don’t necessarily think he’ll be taking over any of the recently relaunched books: Van Lente did go on to say, that when the book is announced, “it’s the most “Van Lentean” AVENGERS title ever…” So let the speculation commence! What say you, Rama readers? Let us know what you think!

Oh my God, I may die from the sheer awesome of that. I hope it's an ongoing and not some stinking mini-series.

That is so much win. Van Lente needs the chance to handle an ongoing team book, let alone something like an Avengers title.

I would argue that the sales of Avengers are very much in spite of Bendis. It's a team of the biggest names in Marvel. It will sell regardless of the atrocious dialog (although the plot actually isn't too bad). The name alone will sell it. I mean there are people still buying Robinson's Justice League and that sucks AND has C-listers (Except Bats and maybe donna troy).

Yeah, but Avengers has tried what Justice League is doing now and its sales have tanked pretty hard. Austen's run, which at least had Captain America, Iron Man, and some of the other big-name Avengers, couldn't sell too well. Whatever magical sales-grabbing effect JLA has, Avengers doesn't seem to have it.
