The Official Avengers Thread (Heroic Age Bendis/JRJR)

That's why I think he should stick with New Avengers and let somebody else write the main book, give Jeff Parker or somebody else a shot. It seems like he's staying on at least until the Avengers movie comes out. After that, I can only hope. He's got his hands on a lot of other projects outside of writing so perhaps he'll scale back in the latter part of 2012.

Sometimes I really wanna go back in time and erase the fact Norman Osborn was ever brought back from the dead. Everything done with him since has either been an awful story or a waste or turning him into Marvel's version of Lex Luthor.

Bendis and Ellis have done a rather good job with the character IMO.

He picked from them but I wouldn't call it watered down. I thought he did a good job showing them with various angles.

It was the same team without radiation man and songbird and with daken. As far as the characters ellis' version they were positively evil and pretty awesome. The DA version of them they were just a whimpy version of who they were as T-Bolts. I defy any issue of DA to show the team nearly as dark or interesting as the last issue of Ellis' run in t-bolts.

(yes, I know I left out sentry, but I think that should always be done as a rule)

I agree. He works as an upper level villain. Not a take over the world guy but more practical. Kinda a cross between lex and the joker. Not as smart as the first or as crazy as the second but with a good mix of both elements. I buy him as an upper level villain over the likes of the hood any day of the week.

Oh, I agree with buying him as an upper level villain over the Hood definitely. It still just is one of the many things Bendis did that I'm absolutely tired of.

Bendis saved Osborn's character. Ever since Osborn was brought back to life he came off as the illegitimate love child of the Joker and Lex Luthor and it didn't work. Instead Bendis took over the character, brought him down to where he was exposed for his crimes and built him up to be the head of the Thunderbolts program (which Ellis did a fantastic job with) and Director of H.A.M.M.E.R. (which was also done very well). And instead of making him Joker Jr., he portrayed Osborn as a man struggling with his insanity, not someone who embraces it.

Actually millar did a good job with his character in ASM. I also thought Ellis did well, during his crazier moments it was clearly explained how he was both being influenced by telepaths and moonstone was screwing with his medication. Bendis only used osborn because ellis talked him into it as he was setting him up for bigger things.

I quite liked Gage's portrayal of him in that T-Bolts mini with venom. Him beating the hell out of Hyde and Tigershark not as the goblin but as osborn was pretty good.

One thing I didn't like was luke cage beating the hell out of osborn and taking him down. That should have been reserved for spider-man and frankly I don't see how cage would stand a chance against norman no matter how mad he was.

Millar never did ASM - he did the Marvel Knight Spider-Man which, correct me if I'm wrong, was pretty much self contained.

I agree that Bendis did a great job with Osborn but a lot of the credit goes to Ellis. I'm glad Osborn came back from the dead. It took Marvel 15 years to get me to feel that way......

Actually, I take that back a little. Paul Jenkins did a great Spidey/Osborn throw-down during his run. He really broke down their feud/relationship to it's core.

Bendis took Venom, Moonstone, Bullseye, and Norman and added them to Daken, Sentry, Ares, and Marvel Boy. So it was only half the team. And yes, they came accross wimpy but they had to for the sake of the plot. They were pretending to be heroes so they couldn't go all out in anyway since they were a higher focus to the public as Avengers than as Thunderbolts. It worked very well with the plot. Both Ellis and Bendis did wonders on Norman in general. And I'll take that even back a bit further with Bendis in the first arc of the Pulse. I thought Bendis did a great job with him there.

That was the first Norman story since his return that really blew me away. I just hated the art (which I've come to accept). It was just a great story.

He took the entire team minus the people that were taken out of the T-Bolts by the goblin. And yes they were wimpy. Funny how ellis didn't need to tone them down for the sake of the plot. They were just more complex and scarier than bendis' version of them. Again look at that last issue. From the goblin crucifying swordsman, to him and songbird having a fight that could only be termed as epic to bullseye slaughtering the telepaths... it was just better, darker than anything bendis had them doing no matter how many times they time travel fought morgan lefay. You would think adding guys like aries, sentry and daken they'd be even better but nope, they just got lamer. The T-Bolts managed to keep positive public opinion even when venom was eating people, so that's not very good reasoning.

I'll disagree about pulse, the only thing there was the buttsex.

You do know luke is like, waaay stronger than both Spidey and Osborne right?

Eh, differences of opinion. Ellis did a great run and that final issue really was fantastic, but I don't look at one better than the other. Dark Avengers wasn't as Dark as Thunderbolts but I felt the plot warrented it. Thunderbolts had some eyerolls from me as well, such as the whole Venom eating people and it being okay for the public, and Thunderbolt action figures

But personally, I liked both of them just fine.

The buttsex was in Alias, not Pulse :) I liked Pulse better than Alias because I'm more of a PG-13 type of guy.

For a guy that routinely uses chemical weapons that choke out his opponents to fight a guy that's used to just taking the hit cause he's got unbreakable skin, I think it's an easy win. Osborn is too fast and he has several weapons that don't need to pierce the skin to hurt someone. And he can fly. He is stronger and more durable but he's not in the same league.

Rather than riddling him with bullets one guy with a bucked of bleach and ammonia to luke's face would easily take him down if not kill him.

I think Jessica Jones was the first woman in Marvel to get pregnant via buttsex.:woot:

I like some of the new additions (Vision), but I'm done with Spider-Man and Wolverine being on the team. Time to move on.

That's the new lineup? Where the hell is Thor? Why does Hawkeye have the Ultimate costume? Is it for the movie?

Ugh, f***ing Bendis.
