IMO the only problem was the cowl. Obviously it was a too big for Keaton's head. In some scenes it looked kind of bad. The cowl was too thick and it was literally covering half of Keaton's eyes. The Returns version was a huge improvement.

I definitely liked the Returns cowl better.

The reason the 89 cowl was so large is that they never got a proper head cast from Keaton...since he was claustrophobic the cast was taken in halves...they did one half of his face, then the other, it was also done in a rush ...they poured both positive halves and corrected the details resulting in the proportions being slightly off...the Returns cowl was sculpted on a printed scan of Keaton's head (which was fairly new technology at the time)....this is why the Returns cowl fits a bit more accurately because the dimensions were correct thus resulting in a better fit( especially along the law line )

interesting fact. i had never heard that they never got a proper head cast from Keaton. Pressed for time I guess!

yep, Alec Gillis from ADI-FX did the initial cast before handing it off to get corrected ...said it was done really late at night and was needed asap

Well, I think they still did a great job, even if the cowl was a bit too big. He still looked fierce.

That's one of the things that I love about the 89 cowl and why it is still my favorite to this day. It's just more "raw" and gives a primal feel to it.

i agree about it being "RAW". It makes Keaton look animalistic and really makes him look like a BAT-man. Very nice!

going over my photos, here is a pic of my 3 1989 Batmobile die casts

the big one is the 1/18 Hot Wheels, the middle one is a 1/43 from AMT/Ertl from 1989, the last one is the 1/68 Hot Wheels.

Wow, interesting. Thank you for sharing.

Where can i find the big one?

IMO it is, by far, the best Batmobile.

When I was a kid my favorite toy out of all my collections (Star Wars, TMNT, Power Rangers, Batman) was the Batmobile that was made by Kenner. The thing looked like a scaled model. If you had this back in the day, you were the man! I'm 24 and I'm not ashamed to say that I miss it.

I wish I had bought some of the Kenner action figures instead I was buying comics.

I still have that batmobile and that figure, never got the kenner batwing which I regret.

That Batmobile is such a beauty. Unfortunately it's going for so much on eBay. Too bad Kenner went out of business, their Star Wars toys were pretty damn good too. I really wanted the Batwing as well, I remember a friend of mine had it.

Has anyone gotten the 1/6 scale Hot Toys version of the Batmobile?

I had a wonky one from 89 that fit two figures, only had a 'convertible' like windshield.

Wasn't too cool, but retroactively got my hands on a Batmissle from Returns a few years ago from an old friend who found it in his old toy chest he was going through after coming back home from college. That think is a beauty, being able to push a button and have it split into thirds is so neat.

The Batmissle figure size toy car, the 89 die-cast, my 89 VHS, Prince LP, and my cardboard cutout of 89 Keaton are my favorite items from the Keaton era...

Sure did! I got it about 2 weeks ago... it's so damn big though I had to just shove it into the back of a very large closet upstairs. I have nowhere to display that's "big enough" :whatever:

I wish I was rich or had enough dispensable income to buy expensive toys these days but I have a wife and child that kind of gets in the way of buying a $500 Batmobile toy :(
