Report: Paul Williams likely paralyzed after motorcycle accident
Paul Williams, the former two-division world champion, is likely paralyzed from the waist down after a motorcycle accident Sunday near Atlanta, Augusta’s WRDW-TV reported on Monday.
Williams’ manager George Peterson said the 30-year-old native of Augusta, Ga., will undergo surgery Wednesday to stablilize the healthy upper half of his spine by putting a protective wall around it.
A powerful 6-foot-1 southpaw, Williams had signed a contract last week to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in a pay-per-view headliner on Sept. 15 in Las Vegas.
Williams (41-2, 27 KOs), who spent more than two years in SI.com’s pound-for-pound top 10, is a former two-time welterweight titleholder and former interim junior middleweight titlist.
He also won a majority decision over Sergio Martinez, who went on to win the middleweight championship, and owns victories over Winky Wright and a prime Antonio Margarito.

I love Paul Williams!!! P4P top ten a few years ago...this news is sad....

RIP Tapia

Sad news about Williams

Even sadder about Johnny Tapia, RIP.

Wow man! That's shocking! It's one of the reasons why I won't ride a motorcycle.

Bute lost?!?!

Well Can't say I'm to shocked. It's why I've said I don't blame Ward for not fighting him because dude sat out the Super 6 then had the nerve to try and fight Ward. Ward fought the best in his division and you ducked and then called him out? That's straight weak sauce.

Bute didn't duck anyone. And he didn't sit out of the Super Six, he simply wasn't included by Showtime. Remember, he was previously an HBO fighter. He ended up signing an exclusive deal with Showtime after the Super Six began specifically so that he could fight the winner. That's the opposite of ducking. As a matter of fact, Ward ducked him. I know Bute has just been raped by Froch, but you don't win fights by proxy, and you shouldn't garner credit for the victories of your past victims. You should be unhappy with Ward for not handling Bute when he should have.

And I'm devastated by the tragic news regarding Paul Williams. I was looking forward to his September date with Canelo. Here's hoping Golden Boy manages to salvage that Pay-Per-View with another opponent who can test Alvarez as much as Williams would have.

Whatever the case, Bute has hardly ever fought in the U.S., and Ward, I'm sure, didn't want to go up there to fight when he just won the tournament. Either way, Ward would beat the skin straight off Bute, I've never seen anything impressive with him to begin with, the best boxer he's faced was an over the hill Glen Johnson.

Agreed! Ward has fought the best in his division and is working on fighting Chad Dawson. Dude is not and has not ducked anyone. Bute hasn't fought anyone and as soon as he does he gets ktfo.

Boxers live dangerously. If they don't die of brain aneurysm, theyd die of heart failure. If not that, theyd die by accidents. If not that they will grow old with Parkinson. I might be grossly over generalizing xP

The same argument is often made against Ward; he never leaves Oakland. And Bute just purposefully fought in Nottingham to shake that stigma. I'd favor Ward over Bute now, too, but the old cliche about styles making fights is true, so you never know.

I do have a problem with you calling Bute unimpressive. I'm not surprised by your claim, though, because boxing fans tend to be quick to jump off the bandwagon once a good fighter's been kayoed. Bute still has world class power and speed. His body attack is positively vicious. He owns the most explosive and impressive victories over Edison Miranda and Librado Andrade, two solid gatekeepers who have made careers out of separating the champions from the also-rans.

Well not necessarily, I would have to be on the bandwagon in order to get off, and I never thought Bute was impressive. As far as him being some sort of threat to Ward, I said this in December:

I was trying to tell people on here that fight wouldn't be close, Ward's no joke. I think he'll beat Bute just as easily

So there was never really any scenario where I thought Bute would challenge Ward at all. And as far as Andrade goes, had the ref done his job in a timely fashion, who knows how that turns out...

They had a rematch, and Bute cut Andrade's liver in half in the fourth round.

No argument there, but that doesn't take away from what almost happened in that first match. To me, the best overall boxer Bute ever faced was Glen Johnson, who was considerably over the hill.

Ward hardly ever leaves Oakland, so there's that.

Looks like Kirkland is replacing Williams to fight Canelo in September.

Canelo by huge KO early.

Anyone else think Antonio Tarver whooped ass Saturday? He was tagging Lateef Kayode, snapping that head back all night, and almost dropped him a few times. The challenger was reliant on sloppy volume punching. I saw Tarver give away the first two rounds, and then begin to outbox his younger opponent.

116-112 Tarver

freddie roach just said if pacman does'nt look good fighting bradley he will tell him to retire

I find it curious Roach would even say that publicly, unless he's just trying his part to promote the fight. Pac should be able to beat Bradley like a drum. I doubt Timothy will try to box him, he'll just try to fight and brawl, which is right up Manny's alley.

Didn't Bradley sign with these guys? Maybe they are looking for their next cash cow.

I dislike Pac sometimes, but that was bull*****!! Bob Arum folks, I'm not that shocked...
