Umm . . . the first Spider-Man movie? The first Batman movie? Superman? Pirates of The Carribbean? Sherlock Holmes?

Batman and Superman came out in the 70s and 80s. Theater going and Box Office has changed dramatically since then. You can't compare those. That'd be like me comparing Cap's BO to Gone With the Wind. You can't do it.

Sherlock Holmes made 200 domestically and the rest was foreign markets. Of course in foreign markets that is a safe bet. It also only opened to 62 mil domestically. Again, this is no Iron Man. Pirates of the Carribean only opened to 46 (granted, in 2003 money) but had ridiculous legs. The film needed the WOM to succeed, though. If it didn't have the WOM, it would have bombed. Once again, this was unusual. As for Spider-Man, he is SPIDER-MAN!!! One of the big 3! That is a lot safer than Captain America, who is not!

Veterans in the trenches and foxholes of WWII weren't reading Spider-Man comics, they were reading Captain America.

Was Superman Returns disappointment a fluke as well?

I just feel the campaign is sort of getting away from this film. This is one of the nastiest and most competitive summers ever and I feel like there was a lot of focus on Thor opening and starting the summer but not as much on Cap. It is a shame this movie couldn't get a July 4th weekend release because that is where it belonged. Instead Transformers garbage.

That was like 70 years ago, LOL! Spider-Man in that time was much more popular.

No, cause Batman Begins didn't start out so hot, either. I think that was more Superman's drought on screen and the fact the movie sucked. Batman had to win his fans back, hence BB's lower numbers.

Transformers was a bigger property for Paramount, who was distributing it. Sad but true. Transformers is a bigger property and a proven commidity, and Paramount loses Cap after this film. Naturally, Transformers was a bigger priority to them.

It still sucks that got the July 4 weekend instead of Captain freaking America.

It's like the trailer says. "HEROES ARE MADE IN AMERICA."

It might've followed two poor films but both were far more successful.
Both movies were massively front-loaded. X-Men: The Last Stand's opening weekend ended up being 43% of its entire domestic gross. XMO: Wolverine's opening weekend made up 47% of its domestic gross. The Last Stand opened huge because of the goodwill generated by X2; Wolverine opened big because of the character's popularity. First Class had an uphill battle because it had no big-name stars, no Wolverine, had a period setting, a miniscule marketing campaign, and followed up two highly anticipated movies that both ended up being massive disappointments. All things considered, I'd say First Class did pretty well for itself. If it's the last X-movie ever made, at least it brought a little respectability back to the franchise.

In case you didn't notice First Class was also front loaded. It was just front loaded a lot lower which is the bad thing.

First Class' OW makes up about 39% of its current domestic gross. That's about average for a summer blockbuster, and an improvement over both its predecessors. Its overseas gross is already higher than Wolverine's, and it's still in theaters.

Currently, Wolverine's worldwide total is only around $35 million more than First Class', and that movie had a big-name star and one of comics' most popular characters headlining. It also had a much stronger marketing and merchandising campaign, as well as much higher expectations from the studio. Wolverine really wasn't more successful than First Class at all.

It is hardly an improvement considering it will be the least successful X-Men film ever.

It is rather funny that XFC still has alot of screens, while Green Lantern has left most of the theaters in my area, and has maybe 3 or 4 daily showings at the mega plex theaters.

Cap has got a really bad spot following Potter, and preceeding Cowboys and Aliens. The Potter films domestically have generally had large dropoffs after the first week, so I think that it can come in first place, but unless C&A is a horrible film, it may not hold it for two weeks.

I hope Cap has some fantastic reviews so it can have some legs going forward.

You're not really thinking this through. Fox knew that First Class was a risky proposition (and I've already laid out all the reasons why, so I'm not going to do it again) and so they lowered their expectations accordingly. With that in mind, the movie did perfectly fine. The brand was way too tarnished by the last two movies for Fox to ever expect blockbuster numbers from First Class.

And I'm not going to bother with this conversation any longer. This thread's supposed to be about Cap's box office, not X-Men's.

Yeah fudge the figures all you want. Keep telling yourselves that :p .

Even Hollywood Reporter put out a BS report about a Green Lantern sequel happening after that movie bombed.

So what does that make Captain America? Is he a B-lister?

Cap is a high B-lister. He's well known, but people don't know about him besides basic stuff like the shield & what not. Though, that could easily change soon.

So far Potter has been getting pretty good reviews. I know that its a minimal amount so far but they aren't borderline positive either so a good chance it won't plummet in RT or Metacritic etc. This probably will effect Cap's BO a bit more unless its reviews are extremely positive also.

The reviews for the latest Potter have been the best the franchise has ever got. I'm not sure how much of a difference they'll make given the vast majority of people know already if they're seeing it or not, but if there is a significant group that are on the fence about maybe catching it because it's the last one then Cap could be in trouble given the inevitable word of mouth Deathly Hallows 2 is going to get.

Captain America currently tracking at a $65 Million OW, with a $181 Million total; Harry Potter currently tracking 132 M OW with a $333 Million total.

Cap has been going up between 1-2% every day for the past couple and had a big leap last week. Potter has stayed rather even, and has seemed to nuzzle into it's current figures. I think Cap will probably beat Potter's second weekend, and go onto a decent run.

I'm still not sure if I see Cap hitting the magic $200 mark, but I think that after everything is said and done, Cap will make enough money for a sequel.

$65 million is about what I was expecting for the OW, though I'm hoping it gets to $200 million, or at least close to it, by the time it leaves theaters.

I'm really hoping Cap can make it to 70 mil

These are just the baseline numbers without reviews too. I'm really hoping that the reviews can give it a nudge closer to the $200mil mark.

Yeah, it would be cool to see Cap join that club, so to speak.

Only Superman, Batman, Spidey, and Iron Man are members, correct? Did i miss anyone?

Oh yeah; Green Lantern :oldrazz: :cwink:

X-Men

X-Men First Class got excellent reviews and it didn't really help very much. It got lost in the shuffle.

Movies like this can be very volatile in their performance. I do think like over $65 million would be pretty good. Star Trek which was released in 2009 and also released in IMAX format made about $75 million opening weekend.
