See it's not really his motives that I didn't like. It's his personality. It felt like if you made a Terminator movie but wrote Arnie as his character from Jingle All the Way. I'm not one of these types who has to have everything exactly as they were in the comics, but I would like certain characters (ie those I am a fan of) to resemble the ones I'm familiar with, and Ultron unfortunately did not.

I agree. I don't have a problem with Spader's performance as Ultron, but the way Whedon wrote him in the movie is rather lackluster and devoid of any real menace that we saw in the teaser trailer. Ultron was more comical than an actual threat, and Whedon totally dropped the ball as the writer for AOU.
 
I still think a lot of the problems with Ultron would have been solved if they didn't insist on giving him facial expressions. When Ultron first shows up in that stark done he's legitimately creepy. Once he gets eyeballs and a mouth everything that was unsettling about him is gone.
