Many times I got PMs about who someone wanted to advance. As I remember correctly, Witchking thought Alkema would be at a severe disadvantage in a match-up facing Victor Mancha; so, he went with the other.

The back cover compares it to "Bram Stoker meets Stephen King meets Michael Crichton," and that comparison is pretty apt, especially in regards to Crichton. Best of all, it gets the reader away from all the Vampire romance crap flooding the market. (I've read the first 2 Twilight books, and about 200 pages of book 3...which, I finally needed a break from. They are ok, but the writer really isn't that good, I feel.)

So you're right about the same place I am (maybe a chapter or two ahead of me). I'm actually enjoying it a lot right now. I felt that the second booked lagged quite a bit toward the middle parts but this one's kept me interested for a while. I was starting to get bored again but then something happened last chapter that's pulled me right back in.
