Let's just say I'm *really* looking forwards to the "back to basics" thing that they're supposedly doing with Gambit.

Hell yeah. Gotta love those veiled/backhanded admissions of how sugarcoating characters/stories was a bad move in the first place. :woot:

Nothing wrong with an Abercrombie and Fitch model. :cwink:

Nahh. I love drooling over my shady guys. Fangirl love.

This is a bit random, but if they do make an X4 and put Gambit in it, I *SERIOUSLY* hope they skip the Romy crap, especially since Rogue's already involved with Iceman and whiny as hell as it is (seriously, would YOU want to find out how wimpy and angsty Paquin'll be when they do Romy-angst?)

If they do Romy, I swear I won't even bother to watch the movie and I've been impatiently waiting for movie-Gambit since 2000.

Now I don't want them to go in full blown lust mode but the truth is that Rogue and Remy ARE a big part of each others lives in the comics. If the two characters do wind up in a movie together (doubtful since Rogue is "cured" now, I don't know how eager Anna is to reprise the role) they better have SOME reference to their history together. A wink, a smile, a joke, a flirt. Something.

Then again, mutant origins have been raped to death as far as their transition to the big screen goes. Take Juggernaut for instance. However, given that the Romy fanbase is such a strong one, there is hope.

I wish he'll show up on #487 (where Storm guest stars) only because Larroca is drawing the issue. He makes the best Gambit. Yum yum.

And most of the detractors only dislike him because of a knee-jerk reaction to everything from the 90's; he's got more depth than some of the 70's X-men if you bother to read his solo books and pay attention.

That's because he was statistically a 90's character. And many writers are only convinced that anything created past their era is rubbish and never bothered reading past that and just dislike the character by default rather than having the time to read his strong points.

For example, I don't think Mike Carey was a huge Gambit fan when he was hired, but all of a sudden Gambit fans encouraged him to read Nicieza's Gambit solo series (A writer Carey's fond of) and some of the better X-Men runs featuring Gambit...and suddenly he has a much more positive view on the character. Robert Rodi was like that too, as soon as he began writing the character...he enjoyed it after a 50-50 opinion before hand.

Writers don't relalize that Gambit has a lot of depth to his personality, than say some of the other X-Men characters who are only defined by one personality and lack of back story...and writers even struggle writing these "favourites" without even realizing it.

That would be a COMPLETE ripoff from the Ultimate storyline. Rogue/Iceman together first and then Kitty starts to come between them. They even had the ice skating scene in X3 and that was straight out of Ult-X-men. To throw Gambit into that would be too much but I have no doubt that they will if he shows up

Great, the 'character depth' debate.

You do know that LOTS of people in real life have uneventful/ordinary "back stories" and might come of as rather one/two dimensional, right?

It's not a BAD thing by default. :woot:

No it isn't. But tragic back stories are more interesting. It's not common for people to experience those tragic things so they will always be intrigued by it. Besides, a character's back story also forms a characters personality. The more interesting their backstory is, the more interesting their personality is.

Just saying it's kinda unfair considering how it usually is an editorial decision to begin with.

Just because a backstory is relatively normal doesn't mean it can't be interesting and add a lot of depth to the character. I mean, Cyke's backstory has some depth to it since it's the foundation for his entire personality AND it's spiced up by Sinister's machinations.

What I think she's saying, and I somewhat agree, is that some of the long-standing X-men members tend to only have one defining personality trait and backstories that don't st the foundation for the character very well.

I mean look at Beast: he had a happy childhood where his mutation was a boon. Now he's suddenly acting like Rogue in the "I hate my powers" thing. Personally I find it a bit off putting. Personality-wise he's just a jokester/technobabble guy most of the time. Hank McCoy is beloved by all, but he's not that nuanced a character.

In that case, yeah, I suppse I agree somewhat too.

Agreed. Still like the f**k out of Blue, but I really never thought of him as much more than a smarter, tougher and less obnoxious Bobby. Oh well.

I think the only thing Bobby and Hank have in common is that they are outgoing and lighthearted. On a side note: it would be cool to see Bobby and Gambit become good friends. They would have so much fun together.

With Gambit's aversion to the cold, that could be a tough friendship....

....Does bobby even exist as a character beyond being a class clown and having all that much hyped potential?

Well, they pushed him to become somewhat of a "ladies man". That, too.

Why would Lorna of all people like a f****n JOKER is beyond me, but what the hell.

I liked them as rivals in the 90s. Not sure I want to see them close

Lobdell seemed to have thought so. Bobby in OZT was the BEST writing for him in all of his years in existance. I wish he were written more like that. I liked seeing him take charge and actually lead a team against the enemy. No Wolverine, no Storm, Cyclops or other vets around to have his back. He showed alot of courage, potential and strength in this arc. Made me proud to be a Bobby fan

as f---d up as she is, I think she's the last one to be picky

I don't think there should be an actual rivalry between the two. No offense, but Gambit shouldn't really be "rivals" with someone years younger than he and with less guile. I do think there should be some tensions between the two; Bobby thinking Remy is just a no account and Remy not caring to prove him wrong.
