Mmm. Come to think of it, yeah, Gumbo wasn't exactly at his best back then, was he?
The characters pretty much had only two bring spots: the Claremont/Lee era and the first on-going by Nicieza. Most of the rest is of debatable quality.

Nicieza's run on the X-books was also pretty good, but it got really bogged down by a lot of the crap going on at the time.

Edit: 1000th post.

I've always pegged her as, and there's really no basis for this belief, the same age as Beast.
Storm definetly is older than Scott and the original X-men. It was stated somewhere in her early appearances. I cant remember, but Ill go check it out now

Edited to add: Found it. UXM 102, states that she was born in 1951. That means nothing today but the comic was written in 1976, which would have made her 25 when she joined the X-men. I think Scott was around 23 at that time so she's about 2 years older. About same age as Beast

Late 20's/early 30's. Personally, I place him at the same age as Cyke.

Nah i don't think he's as old as Cyke. I'd say he is 26,27 or 28. I think Cyclops is in his early 30's.

I actually see nearly all of the X-Men in their early 30's... 'Cept for the few that were introduced young on purpose.

For Gambit I definitely see a guy right around 30.

Gambit's been through a lot so I think it makes him seem older than he actually is. :) I see him around 25 or so.

What was Gambit's purposefor beng introduced again? and WHY was he kept around?

Why is any character initially introduced? Because as you need them to tell stories.

Gambit first appeared when Storm was de-aged and on the run in New Orleans. He stayed around for "his own reasons," though it was mainly because he emerged as a rather popular character.

but WHAT is his popularity?

Uh, I don't really know how to answer that one... Gambit's a popular character. In all fairness, you can not really explain why most characters are popular (I'll go ahead and say you can explain Storm's popularity, just so Darth and Canemacar don't do it :woot: ). Gambit just happens to have a lot of fans.

I think it was the Danger Room scene that sealed the deal, the one where he kicks Wolvie's ass. :D

25 seems too young. Karma is around that age and he's definetly older than that former New Mutant

Same as any character; to play a part in the story. In this particular instance, Gambit was to be involved in a long-running plot where he betrays the X-men because he was an astral projection that was the "good" counterpart o Sinister, but may have had second thoughts due to him developing his own consciousness.

and WHY was he kept around?

Because he kicks ass and people love him.

Gotta say I'm glad they axed that one. :woot:

Not everyone needs a bloody cosmical purpose or sci-fi-esque origin. :wow:

That he does.

Some for the wrong reasons, but what the hell.

*glares at the 'misunterstood thief with a heart of gold' nonsense enthusiasts*

What I like most about that panel isn't that he beat Wolverine in a fight. What I like about it is that it implies.

1: Gambit messed with the Danger Room. That means he knows how to work it and that he's gotten in the control room sometime before. He's cased the X-mansion as if he wanted to rob it.

2: He figured out how to use the Danger Room on his own That would require some kind of technical know-how or at least a quick mind that can figure out the workings through experimentation.

3: He knew to use a Lady Deathstrike hologram. Either he knew a bit about Logan's past or he got into the Xavier Protocols and read about it in Logan's file.

4: It showed him steak attacking like a thief should be doing; he should go charging into a fight head-long.
