Xbox The Official Gears of War Thread

Yes. The arcade mode is really for new players, players of other games who just want to play casually. I didn’t enjoy it too much. I loved king of the hill though and will be playing that a tonne.
well, arcade mode sounds like it will be perfect for me...…..

whenever I get to Gears 5...……...

You might like the 3 player coop mode Escape or the 5 player Horde mode more. The campaign will also be 3 player coop.

Yeah, one of the first big games of the 360 generation.
I can see why they want to change things up in the 5th installment. which is also why Xbox needs some new pillar exclusive franchises, since Gears and Halo have been out so long.

is Horde mode where you team up with other players to fight waves of CPU bad guys? as opposed to fighting other teams of players to capture flags and stuff?

Yes, that what Horde modes in games refer to. It originated from Gears of War 2 where it was first introduced. That was my favourite version before they added the tower defence elements which take away most of the skill and make it all about strategy. It used to be a balance of both.

I still love the mode and love that mode in general in games. Coop team fun is my favourite in gaming with no obnoxious human opponents or (if you play with friends) no obnoxious guys on your own team either!

Yeah, they should make Gears and Halo as good as possible. I want them coming out for life. But all these new studios need to give us the Uncharted, God of War, Spider-Man equivalents too. That in turn will boost their gamepass service. Every top exclusive they come out with will permanently improve gamepass even in the years/decades to come. Having every game within a successful new series ready to play on gamepass is a great way to get people on to the service.

ah, cool. sounds more like my cup of team. I'd rather team up with other players to take down bad guys than have to face human opponents.

agreed.

Gamepass is already a heck of a deal. It's especially good for more casual players like myself, as I can sample and play a variety of games without having to go to the store and buy each one. Which also acts like a rental service of sorts. Can try out new games before buying them. The ones I like and want a physical copy, then I can buy after trying out.

Where Gamepass could really shine is if/when they add more BC games. Those older games are usually harder to find physically, so if Gamepass offered a massive library of BC older titles, that alone could be worth the price of admission.

True. Also don’t forget to download your free games with gold every month. I must have around 200 free games including many old ones just from that over the years.

yeah. sometimes you get good games through GWG. I got Tomb Raider Reboot through that, as well as some other games ( think I got KOTOR, too ).

You can play Escape mode with 3 and Horde mode with 5 for coop modes. The idea is to have enough friends online at any given time to never need randoms. So much better playing with friends with mics. I have a few regulars who will be on most days and @Supreme Beast from the Hype should be on a lot too.

Oh good, you already know about it. Yes there is plenty of crap on there but when you have it long term there are decent titles every so often. Forza 6 for free is great.

with College starting next week though, I'm not sure I will have much time to play online with friends. I'll try to fit it into my schedule, but studying will come first of course.

and Xbox still gives you BC games through GWG. unlike PS Plus, where they stopped offering PS3/Vita games.

so PS Plus only gives you 2 games per month while GWG gives you 4.

Yes of course. To be fair I haven’t played anywhere near as much this gen as last. 3 times I had to take a break of about a year this gen. I have had a bunch of work outside work lasting for years which I am trying to kill off too, and once that is all finally done I can hopefully get back to the levels I was playing before. For eg this gen I think my gamer score went up by about 10-20k compared to 130-140k last gen.

hey, I'd take that 10-20K GS increase. :cwink:

Having less time to play, and being more selective in buying new games due to tuition and other expenses, will also mean I can devote more time to playing through my backlog ( which will also help boost my GS ).

It would be nice, though, if we could do another session together like we did in KI. so we'll see.

and hey, maybe in College, I'll be able to meet other Xbox players. :)

Defeating the backlog has been my never ending quest but I would love to make a massive dent in it. At least in all the games that one “should” have played.

Yeah we can do that whenever you’re free. Doesn’t necessarily have to be too regular if you don’t get time, but every time will add continual progress. And we can eventually move onto other fighting game too.

Yeah it’s a great place to meet people generally, and Xbox is an awesome way to stay in touch regularly after you leave. Especially with people who live far away. I’m in better touch with many Xbox friends than real life good friends, although some Xbox friends have made the transition to real life friends too.

yeah, I still don't feel that same sense of community on Playstation.

speaking of fighting games, Soul Calibur VI is becoming my go to fighter now that Cassandra finally got released. man, what beaut!! :hrt:

PS was always the great console for solo guys and Xbox for coop/multiplayer. Fighting games were also more popular on PS with the controller and tradition, but they seem to have more of a rivalry than a community. Gears 2 Horde had the best community. At the time my entire friends list was made up of people who played Horde nearly every day. :D: Whenever someone dropped out I usually had someone ready to replace them.

ha. that's a lot of friends!

don't get me wrong, I'm still primarily a solo gamer. and I do like fighting games. And those are areas where Xbox needs some work. Hope they can do better on those fronts next gen.

Yeah. I just don’t know how Gamepass is going to stay attractive and possible to run at reasonable cost in the years to come without Microsoft creating an ongoing bunch of must have exclusives for it. I am pretty sure that is the idea behind buying up studios.

hope so.

the only "downside" I can see to Gamepass is how that would affect the retail sales of their 1st party exclusives.

If Xbox exclusives, like Gears 5, are going to available on Gamepass day one, then Gamepass subscribers don't really have incentive to go out and buy a retail copy, unless they want to own a physical version.

I mean, I wasn't planning on buying Gears 5 yet since I wanted to play through the prior games 1st. However, since it will be on Gamepass day one, I can just download and play it anyways without having to buy at a store.

Microsoft are likely shooting for the big prize of a successful gamepass. You're making significant monthly income all year round if that succeeds. Netflix overtook many movie studios that have been around for decades within a few years with this model, so if it succeeds it will be a much bigger asset for them than the money they would have got for game sales. 3rd party guys could get pissed off but then there is also the option to buy at a small discount through game pass, and also this is why it is big exclusives that really matter and can be relied on indefinitely. Netflix and Amazon Prime have started really pushing original content above all and committing big budgets to it. That way they are fine long term even if all the 3rd parties pull the plug and launch their own services.

yeah. as shows like Stranger Things prove, quality exclusive content sells. Which is why MS/Xbox needs a strong lineup of quality exclusive franchises.

Theoretically, if Gamepass really takes off, MS could just go the way of Netflix and become platform neutral, meaning Gamepass is on other consoles and devices. That's my fear, and I hope it doesn't turn out that way, because Xbox still has a hardware history associated with it.

Or, they could use the success of Gamepass to sell Xbox consoles by making Gamepass an exclusive Xbox feature. If you want to enjoy all the benefits and exclusive content first, you need Gamepass - only on Xbox. That's what they need to market. Gamepass could very well be the Xbox's secret weapon and strongest selling point if MS plays it right.
