The Official Green Lantern Review Thread

Sorry guys, I am posting from a cellphone. Kind of slow getting the message.

But the problem with this film is the nature of the story/universe. No matter what, there was going to be a lot of CG.

Now, I will say this; why wasn't ILM used?

Probably to reduce cost. Not sure what the total budget for the film was, but I'm sure this was a big consideration.

You're right there was going to be alot of CGI, especially going with the CG costume. I'd venture to say there will probably be twice the amount of CG shots as there were in Thor, because of all the set filming and such, and Thor had alot of CG in Asguard.

In any case, while you don't want them to penny pinch, it is all about the bottom line, the film has to be profitable.

I think Sony gets alot if gigs because A.) They're Sony and B.) They're the only major visual effects studio in town besides Digital Domain. I think there are incentives that Sony has to draw movies to their company by providing jobs in town.

I thought reviews were suppose to be coming in today.

It might be the classic 'comic book movie' case where the sequel might be the stronger movie.

I'd rather the sequel be a better film than the original, that's how it should be in my opinion.

So the embargo isn't lifted until wednesday? Wow, that reeeeeally doesn't sound good at all.

Twitter comments are always welcome, but they should just lift this embargo already. I need reviews!

It's quite common that studios don't want review to come out early...hence the embargo.
However you guys remember the time when Avatar and Inception came out. In both cases the reviews couldn't be published until a couple of days before the release however due to the fact that many of the reviews were (extremeley) positive , the studios decided to lift the embargo early on.

Just for the sake of information, Peter Travers' was the first official review of The Dark Knight to be published and that was almost two weeks before the release. Soon after, the rest of the reviews started flooding in and there was already a consensus on RT's tomatometer more than a week before the film hit theaters. If I remember correctly, the same was the case with Batman Begins as well.

It's a bit worrying...by now, most of the major critics and bloggers must have seen it. Even if they couldn't give proper reviews, the twitter-verse would be busting at the seems to get their opinions out there. There would be a lot of things like "Saw something awesome...and Emerald!" or something like that...letting us know without giving a real review. But aside from a few, we've got zilch lately. With Thor and First Class we knew a long time before the official reviews were released that they were good, or at least perceived of as good by most. Not so here. Color me worried.

I vaguely remember at least 25 reviews of TDK being up a good week before the film was released. This is not a good sign if reviews aren't out, it shows a severe lack of confidence and is now about minimizing fallout. Not good.

If the embargo isn't lifted until Wednesday, that's a bad sign. We might have a turd on our hands.

I heard there's a "review" tv spot being aired in the USA' Is it true? Are the blurbs from major critics?

There was one during the NBA Finals last night. The review phrase were the usual cliched phrases you see.

I think one of the ones was "Summer Goes Green"...

It is worrying. I mean, i'm sure we all don't want to jump to conclusions, but really, if they were confident about the movie surely they'd want reviews out there telling everyone how awesome it is?

Not allowing reviews until like, 2 days before the release just stinks of them having something to hide.

Honestly, I just don't see this film stinking because of the director involved. Whether it's a transcendent comic book film or a masterpiece is kind of irrelevant.

This guy is a competent director. This guy can direct high adventure films. The Mask of Zorro. Goldeneye. Casino Royale. The guy has a track record of good work...

It may not be the greatest film of the world. I don't think they phoned this in. I think they tried making the best film they could, considering the character/universe they're working in.

But this I know; it's going to be a solid film, based solely on Martin Campbell. That I do know.

The thing that makes me most confident for the film (aside from the positive tweets from folks who have actually seen it) is the fact that WB is holding free advance screenings across the country Wednesday night via the comic shop giveaways. You certainly wouldn't do that if you had a turkey on your hands... you'd make sure no one saw it, and then hope for the biggest opening weekend B.O. you could muster before the word got out.

Martin Campbell isn't infallible. The Zorro sequel, Beyond Borders and Criminal Law were terrible despite their decent to great casts.

No, he's not but you could argue that The Mask of Zorro is one of the all time great adventure films in the past 20 years.

Casino Royale is a fantastic reboot of the character, after he did what many felt was one of the best Bond films in Goldeneye.

Again, not infallible but when he's got it going, he's damn good.

Hell, I thought Edge of Darkness was a solid, character driven action thriller that's incredibly old school. It's the type of cop film they don't make anymore.

Well i can agree. Mask of Zorro, Goldeneye and Casino Royale are great.

But I'm just saying, he's not infallible and I don't share your belief that just because his name is on it, it won't be crap.

And like I said, i'm not writing it off. But having an embargo all the way up until two days before release is dodgy, no matter which way you cut it. If the studio and everyone involved truly believed this film was awesome they'd allow reviews at least a week before release, to show it off.
