I'm starting to wonder if maybe WB has over promoted this film. The advertising for this film has bordered on desperate at times, it's like they're forcing the hype, that is where it might backfire.

This. It feels like they're trying to squeeze as much money out of the opening weekend as possible before critics come along and burst the bubble.

It's a matter of WB enforcing the embargo. Usually if the studios trust in the film, they don't enforce the embargo. In fairness, they're not the only one's doing it. Fox is blocking Mr. Popper's Penguins reviews.

Good point. I still feel they're keeping their hand close to chest to better control the reception this film gets in its initial week. The made a mistake with the tone of the first trailer and it seems they're not taking anymore chances.

I'm very curious to see how it plays out.

I don't think that critics will blast this movie, they will more likely give it average rating, but since Cars and TF3 are coming in next weeks after this movie's release WB will want to maximize the earnings in the opening week, so any average review that could deter the GA from going to see GL will have some effect, hence WB are enforcing embargo till Wednesday.

I seriously doubt those who think that the movie will bomb, it may not be stellar blockbuster or critically acclaimed movie but an OK entertaining movie that gets average reviews and makes some decent collections.

Well, unfortunately WB has no choice but to make sure people understand that this film is coming this weekend.

WB is betting their entire 10 year plan on how this film is received by audiences. Remember, Potter ends in one month. That was the cash cow that keep WB afloat (along with a few other films) for the past decade.

WB has said that the DC properties will take the place of Potter for the next decade. If Green Lantern doesn't work, their entire plan goes down in flames.

Green Lantern has to work for the audience before they even go ahead and start developing other properties that aren't Superman or Batman.

Green Lantern, literally, is the Iron Man for WB/DC. If it works, it launches the DC collection of characters. If it doesn't, it'll just be Batman and possibly Superman that WB/DC will keep in the public consciousness.

It always worries me when we get this close to a release and there is still no official reviews out. Makes me feel like they're avoiding early bad press in order to at least get a decent opening weekend. Not that reviews really seem to effect movie-going.
Oh and the tweets are as good as useless.

If WB had some indicators that this movie will bomb, they would be releasing this in Brazil, Argentina and some more countries on June 17th instead of a August release, because by that time many would have read the reviews coming out that the movie is a disaster and many more would have already DL it and seen it and spread a WoM that the movie is bad.

I think that WB has enough confidence in this movie, and the mega advertisement / promotional campaign is generally avoided for potential bombs, anyone here remembers how Marvel handled the promotion of The Incredible Hulk (*as compared to Iron Man) ?

I believe Green Lantern is going to be a success with audience, but not with critics.

Its the kind of movie critics dont dig it.

What kind of film is that?

Iron Man type? Has over 90% on RT.

Star Trek? Over 90% on RT.

Critics don't discriminate on type. Critics judge the execution within that type.

I totally resent how TIH was marketed, they really didn't seem to even try and the movie suffered for it, and the fans as well. I think it was Universal that was in charge of that one whereas the IM movies, Thor and Captain America have all been handled by Paramount.

Transformers 2 (Revenge of the Fallen.) has RT rating 20 % but did well financially and is getting a sequel too.

Reviews dont hold to much weight when it comes to a movies sucess. First Class got great reviews but it doesnt seem to many people are giving it a chance.
Also i believe they are pushing this with so much hype because they want people unfamiler with Gl to understand it and want to go see it. Us fans are the only ones over exposed to the trailers. The GA doesnt search for every clip and new tv spot they just see it in passing. So what seems like alot to us really isnt to every 1 else

Yeah, but why was marketing of TIH poor, because they were not expecting huge collections and were saving the money as they were not confident of recovering that money spent in marketing and production, they were clearly trying to minimize (would be ) losses.

I also think that the TIH suffered because alot of people just didnt think it would be good after 04's hulk. I think a Hulk sequel after the Avengers will prob do just fine. Hulk will have two good movies backing it up. Same as a Thor sequel. Nobody new what to expect.
Even if GL is average in the box office it will likely still get a sequel much like F4 did. It needs to build a GA fan base along with us nerds because we alone cant carry it. So i doubt if this doesnt do great it will ruin DC's movie line up

Robinov said something interesting in this article:

“We’re trying very hard to deliver,” said Jeff Robinov, Warner’s top movie executive. “Yes, there is a lot at stake. But I try and frame these things in terms of my own expectations. If you look at ‘Batman Begins,’ it did about $370 million worldwide and got us to a sequel.” A whopper of a sequel in “The Dark Knight,” which earned more than $1 billion at the global box office and showered DVD money on the studio.

Good points, I think sometimes we, as comic fans overestimate our importance in these movies. Unfortunately even though GL is a #1 seller it probably only shifts 80k a month, 70-80% of people only know what they see on tv/cinema. I would even hazard I guess that 90% of people especially here in the UK never heard of him until the last month or so

GL looks beyond epic, I get goosebumps of anticipation.

I see what you're saying Bruce Begins, but with a loser attitude you always lose, and they did, big surprise on that one.

PumpkinBombxXx I'm also feeling that Ang's Hulk left enough of a bad taste in people's mouths that many avoided TIH because they just thought it be more of the same.

I don't think it will bomb. I think there's a good chance it will underperform, but I don't think it will bomb. Even with bad reviews, it will make money. I bring up Fantastic Four for comparison, although that movie only had a 100M dollar budget.

The problem with TIH, was they made the same mistake as XFC has made with trying to play it off as a pseudo sequel/reboot rather than just flat out start over. Actually not so much in the movie, but the way it was promoted.

I remember after opening weekend, they put the Stark scene in the advertising to try to draw people to see it.

GL's bigges problem is if it doesn't open to 55 or more, it's in big trouble considering Cars 2 and Transformers.

not a good sign reviews haven't been released.

we shall soon see.

that's why i do not trust the review.

Yeah, it could go several ways. That person could be a studio plant, or it could honestly be a legit film critic who decided to anonymously post a review and avoid violating the embargo. I don't know.

Some do. Ebert heavily discriminates superhero movies for being superhero movies very often. Not all critics are good. GL not having any reviews by this point in time is making me nervous. I hope it gets good reviews.

Thought the 300 million cost was the total with the marketing? Thought the film by itself cost 175?
