Warner Bros. has set Greg Berlanti to direct "Green Lantern," a live-action take on the DC Comics superhero.

Berlanti will write the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Donald De Line will produce; Andrew Haas is exec producer.
Berlanti hopes to make the jump to big-budget fantasy fare after serving as writer and exec producer on character-driven TV series "Dirty Sexy Money," "Brothers & Sisters," "Everwood," "Jack & Bobby" and "Dawson's Creek." He previously directed 2000 feature "The Broken Hearts Club."
"Green Lantern" was hatched in 1940. Hal Jordan, a second-generation test pilot, is an ordinary man who has been charged with defending a sector of the universe.
Warner Bros. and DC Comics assigned the project to De Line, who is currently in Morocco shooting "Body of Lies," the Ridley Scott-directed WB drama that stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. Guggenheim, who works with Berlanti as a writer-producer on "Brothers & Sisters," wrote the Marvel comicbooks "Amazing Spider-Man," "Wolverine" and "Blade." Green, the "Heroes" co-exec producer who worked with Berlanti on "Everwood" and "Jack & Bobby," wrote the Marvel Comics title "Superman/Batman" and was a writer-producer on "Smallville."

I think something is going down...

At this rate they'll kick start Wonder Woman next.

I hope this is part of an elaborate plan by DC to catch up with Marvel at the movies.

In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night, No Evil Shall Escape My Sight...let those who worship evils might, beware my power, GREEN LANTERN'S LIGHT!

Here's hoping this film gets off the ground soon! The Emerald Knight is one of my all time favorite heroes. Especially now with the Sinestro Corps War exploding through the DCU! Long Live, Green Lantern!

I hope it doesn't suck. NATHAN FILLION for HAL JORDAN! :woot:

The sad part about all of this is that Justice League will have to be released before any of these can reach production. :cmad:

How does the guy who did Everwood and Brothers and Sisters get the job of Green Lantern? Or is he just a hardcore comics fan?

If anything all of these solo movies can be worked on while Justice League is filming & by the time Justice League is done the solo movies should be ready to go

^ Right, but do you know how long production and post production will take on this?

I think we can take this news as "we have our cast for Justice League".

Never heard of any of those shows so I'm gonna assume they are on UPN or WB.

I like that they mentioned Hal.

Indeed with all of these solo movies being announced one by one it is also telling us that the actor & actress is set for Justice League & they more then likely included solo movies in the contract

Common is probably Lantern.
Palmer is Wonder Woman (I mean, c'mon, what was the chance that two director attached to solo projects are announced around the time when Wonder Woman, a film that is known for development hell, has cast the lead role?)

This is a stupid move. WB is betting on the JL movie to be damn good (and well received), allowing them to continue the characters in their own personal movies. Only problem is, the solo movies feature the version of the character seen in JL...which means this GL movie will most likely focus on John Stewart.

My only question is this: if JL ends up being incredibly successful, what does that bode for the respective Superman and Batman franchises?

Fyi.

These films wont be made if Justice League goes ahead. So; these are clearly some sort of safety net by W.B. incase JL falls apart. If it doesnt; then these will be pushed back.

The GL mythos is practically begging for a kickass screen treatment. Dear Zeus, don't let them screw this up.

Ideally, they'd push Justice League back until at least two more solo projects could be properly developed.

God I want a movie about the Corps, not about John Stewert. Not saying he cannot be incorporated, I would just like a movie with many GLs in it.

You might be right about that. WB using a trio of film (WW, F, GL) as a safety net.

Sure they will be made. There's money in it.

More films equals more money for the WB, period. Multiple Franchises are better than one. Hershey's didn't just make one sort of candy bar did they? Nope they have tons to capitalize on a popular market.

Once the JLA is dropped a short time afterward The Flash and GL will also come out capitalizing on their success and it will be successful, good or not, trust me. I mean neither of the F4 films were that mind blowing if you ask me, but because the characters were entertaining and had super powers it made moolah. Same goes for JL I hope it will be awesome, but even if it falls short of my considerable expectations...it will still make tons of doe. Unless they take a page out of the Singer handbook of boring catastrophes and have the JL combat growing mountains and earthquakes.

All that being said...

Berlanti, who directed the 2000 feature The Broken Hearts Club, will co-write the script with "Brothers & Sisters" co-writer Marc Guggenheim, who has a good amount of comic book writing experience, and Michael Green, the co-executive-producer of NBC's hit show "Heroes."

I think this Green Lantern movie has a serious shot at not sucking. I mean the talent behind it seems very credible, a lot of dudes with comic book experience and they've even got a writer from my favorite show "Heroes". With all this comic talent I think they'll keep what makes Green Lantern great and not try to reinvent the wheel. The Last thing we want is the Guardians of the Universe getting the Live Action Galactus treatment. (Giant Rain Cloud anyone?) :oldrazz:

NO NO NO!
They've got it all wrong, I'M directing/writing the Green Lantern movie!

They just don't know it yet.

Well it´s nice to see that The Flash and now The Green Lantern are moving along, but man I´m not really liking the directors they have picked.

Here's hoping the inevitable Green Lantern and Flash video games will not suck.

This is f***ing excellent news!! GREEN LANTERN, DAMMITT! :yay: :gl:

I'm so happy! I hope this movie gets made.

It would be great if they use Hal, but most likely they'll use John for GL. I'm fine with that. Especially if we see other GL's (Wich should be a given in any GL movie. We have to see Oa and the GL Corps!)

Actually it's supposed to be the other way around. If JL gets made (at this point no one should be doubting it, but we are talking about WB here...) then the spinoffs like GL and Flash go ahead. Unless JL fails miserably, wich I don't think is going to happen, not even if it sucks for us comic geeks. The GA will eat it up.

It'd be so cool if we could get Green Arrow and Hawkman movies too.

David Goyer was developing "Supermax" with WB, or "Green Arrow without his costume in a prison against C list villains." wich sounded like an interesting idea. But nothing has been heard of that movie in a couple of months. But yeah, Green Arrow is hella cool.

Supermax sounded really cool. I'm still hoping they make it. Until then you can see Green Arrow and Black Canary on smallville this season, I think ep 10 or something like that.

Guys, I think this is going to be a TV series (note that the article didn't say anything about a movie). Berlanti and Co. have no experience with major motion pictures. In any case this is great news.
