The Official Green Lantern Review Thread

Just for those who are on the fence about review embargoes, here is an article on the topic. They cite an example in 2008 where Warner Bros. asked Aint it Cool News to take down a review that came out prior to the release of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars", which was being distributed by Warner's Cartoon Network division. The article also explains how they go about getting the critics to consent to the embargo. Apparently in order to receive accredidation (and admittance) to an advance screening of the film, the reviewer would have to agree to some straightforward restrictive language like “Reviews of the film being screened may only be published after the official premiere. All journalists seeking accreditation to the advance screening declare their acceptance of this ‘embargo.’” Now, one thing to note about the article is that it states that embargoes are routine, but selectively enforced, which would explain why some reviews/tweets (which were mostly positive) have popped up without any recourse.

I wish I had liked Thor as much as most on Hype did but it just didn't do much for me.

If the bar was set with microwave emitters and Batmobiles flying from rooftops in BB, then I can't agree with that assessment of TDK. The universe was already pretty over the top after BB. Now if you want to say both of them failed, then I can agree with that.

well microwave emitters are pretty legit science. i believe they exist in some capacity, though not entirely perfected, or at least not as capable as what was depicted in BB. but still entirely plausible.

that tank of a batmobile driving over rooftops....yeah, thats quite a stretch.

but the whole ballistics test thing and even more importantly the sonar thing at the end. there is no legit science behind any of that. not even almost plausible science. that sonar machine/cell phone b.s. would have required god magic.

As bad as that sequence was, I didn't find it any worse than the microwave emitter vaporizing a bunch of water but having zero effect on humans. "Focused microwaves" my arse. :oldrazz:

I just find it hilarious that, as "overrated" as people find TDK, no message board on this site has been able to go a thread without mentioning it, especially when it dosent need to be mentioned. The last thing anyone should see when visting the thor or green lantern forum is fanboys complaining about TDK, because they shouldnt even be talking about it in the first place.

I guess I'm just easy when it comes to pseudo science(hereafter PS). I want to take the movie(any superhero movie) for what it is and as long as they don't do something stupid like completely not explain a PS aspect and simply expect it to be taken as so just because, then I'm more than likely going to go with it. My brain will follow a movie to stupid places as long as they make it somewhat safe to do so by thinking about questions that will arise and dealing with them in the script.

This thread is fun but it should get back on topic. And yes we are all obsessed with talking about TDK , I realized that a long time ago. lol

I don't really mind people who didn't like it talking about it though because that doesn't change my opinion.

Although this is the wrong thread for this convo so we should stop.

Yeah, back on topic. WB is clearly hiding something with this Lantern embargo.

Yeah, Warner Brothers is clearly and totally hiding something despite allowing a bunch of people on twitter to sing the praise of the movie, the ones who have seen it. :whatever:

well I've liked what I've seen lately, so I have hope that I will enjoy the film. That's about all I can expect at this point.

Actually, there is legit science behind the ballistics test in Knight. I remember reading about it over at CHUD.com when someone else over there had issues with that and another forum member found a NY Times article about that type of ballistics work. It was new in '08...mainly in test phase.

But enough about the Bat, back to the Emerald Knight...

I'm hoping for good reviews now....not just for the movie, but because then a bunch of people would look hella stupid.

I can only hope Green Lantern film is 1/10 as good as TDK . The hate of TDK is just absurd

I bet it ends up sub-40 on the Tomatometer.
I think it can manage something in the early 40's.

People on Twitter sing the praises of just about every big budget film. I'm looking for some well thought out reviews from critics who don't suck and who I follow.

And if they aren't hiding something why aren't they lifting the embargo right now?

I do hope people who are still holding out hope know that I am hoping that my feelings are wrong about GL but I'm not going to put my fingers in my ears and ignore the signs just because I am wishing for a decent flick.

CAN WE STOP TALKING ABOUT NOLAN AND HIS BATMAN MOVIES? :cmad:

The top of the list being Warner. If the reviews are good, then WB was stupid to have the embargo. The first Iron Man is proof that good reviews can lift a movie from being something that was just on the radar, to making it a household name and a summer block buster.

I think GL and IM both have in common that they were 2nd tier characters going into the films being released. IM is now arguably Marvel's 2nd flagship character along with Spidey.

I think GL could potentially lift the character to Superman/Batman status if the film does well.

I don't think This Movie will be Bad it is going to make a lot of money even if it has bad reviews.

I agree, Warner would look the dumbest of us all because they held back good reviews for their 200million dollar movie for no reason what-so-ever.

This user review from imdb is pretty much the kind of reviews I expect:

Brightest Review from a Comic and Non-comic Fan, 13 June 2011

Author: jordan-esque from California

I was a comic book fan who's read Green Lantern since the late 80's and I was privileged to see this movie early with a friend who is not a non-comic book fan in general. So what you're getting in this review is 2 perspectives on the movie.

Off the bat: Do NOT expect deep character growth development and relationships you would find in "X-men: First Class" or even "Thor" for that matter. This movie is simply for pure enjoyment.

SPECIAL EFFECTS:

The special effects are the bread and butter of this film, and it's what definitely makes the film tick. Only gripe my friend and I had was that the CGI on some of the movements of the characters were so like 10 years ago aka Spider-Man the Movie (2002). You would think after all these years we could see better CGI animation especially when it transitions to live action Hal Jordan to CGI Hal Jordan.

[BLACKOUT] The only other complaint we shared though was that Hal Jordan's constructs in this movie was a little "too cartoony". He basically created everything from a sword, flamethrower, gatling gun, anti-air artillery gun, to a SWAT shield, catapult, and a jetplane. For a live action movie, just felt a little over the top cartoony, almost made for the kid's entertainment. I don't think I've seen his animated counterpart in the Justice League TV series (John Stewart) make these kinds of constructs - that's how cartoony it felt. Then again, we all have little kids in all of us.

Also, according to my friend, the way they made the power of the ring was just too godlike - the "McGyver of rings". Once Hal Jordan completed his short training, you knew he was just going to be unstoppable. It was true to the comic books but to a casual movie goer, it led to a little bit of a turn-off since it makes the villain look pale in comparison, especially in the final battle, which the trailers actually gave a hint to on how it would end. [/BLACKOUT]

STORY:

The story was told very simple. Those familiar with the comic, it follows very closely to the first 3-4 issues of The Secret Origins (2008) story arc written by Geoff Johns, and the original Emerald Dawn storyline retelling of the late 80's. In other words, it's not based on the continuity of the original story of Hal Jordan back in the Silver Age revival of the character.

My friend thought the movie tried to fit in a lot of plots and stories like Spider-Man III did (he was thinking more like the Silver Age revival stories where Hal Jordan doesn't meet up with the Green Lantern Corps and just stays on earth). While I on the other hand thought it was okay and done a little bit better simply because I knew and read the book, and also in hindsight, knew they were doing this to set up a potential sequel. There's a post credit scene too!

A missed opportunity I honestly thought, although they weren't "buddies" in the comics, it would've been better if they had played more on the relationship between Hal Jordan and Sinestro as something a bit more than just mentor to student, in order to build up a stronger emotional bond when the time comes for *Semi-spoiler* ---- Sinestro to turn evil. But think of Peter Parker and Harry Osborne (Green Goblin 2), or Professor X and Magneto, one can even say Bruce Wayne and R'as Al Ghul (actually as Henry Ducarde). Btw, Sinestro becoming evil, is not a spoiler since even a 10 year old kid can point just based on the name.

ACTING:

Mark Strong definitely was the best part of the film. He played the very cool, and calculated Sinestro better than even the comic books could write him.

Michael Clarke Duncan as the voice of Kilowog fit perfectly as well and his ribbing of Hal Jordan set up a good portion of comedic moments.

Blake Lively played the typical bossy girl [BLACKOUT]who would not give Hal Jordan the time of day but changes her heart once the hero reveals himself and saves the day. [/BLACKOUT]Don't expect anything too deep like Peter Parker & Mary Jane or even, to an extent, Thor & Jane Foster. It had a hybrid feel between Clark Kent & Lois Lane with Bruce Wayne and Rachel Dawes feel.

Ryan Reynolds was a positive but mixed bag. My non-comic book friend thought he was a good Hal Jordan (not knowing anything about him), while I thought some of his inner monologue jokes from him seemed more appropriate coming from Guy Gardner (another Green Lantern) or even Wally West the Flash. Actually some of it was more Ryan Reynolds just being Ryan Reynolds (see Van Wlder or any other Ryan Reynolds film) and I wonder how much ad-lib he had? All in all, I wasn't too impressed, but I wasn't disappointed either. He was cynically lighthearted but when it was time to get serious, he became serious.

SUMMARY:

All in all this movie was a good summer movie for everyone to enjoy. It doesn't take itself way too emotionally seriously as it should. It's definitely a great movie for the kids. If you just solely want to have a good time, then this movie will brighten your day.

RATING:

3 out of 5 - enjoyable film that's worth seeing.

Thor was deep and emotional?

Yeah, I'm just going to move on...

That review is um interesting. Don't really care for user reviews one way or the other on that site but it was interesting.

See, now that's a review.
Not because it is moderately positive, but because some care was put into it, it is perfectly structured and detailed and it isn't laden with spoilers, and thanks for blacking out what must be spoilers.
