The Official Green Lantern Review Thread

Seems that those reviewers have more of a problem with the comic book story than the actual film...

Maybe the movie didn't present the source material in the right way?

I doubt it, I mean they had everyone involved. If this movie doesnt work I think it will have more to do with the concept of green lantern being ridiculous. They had everything in their favour for this film, money, good director, comic book writer contributions etc. Its pretty much do or die for GL because its not like batman or superman where you can look at the older films and say "hey we could do this instead".

This pretty much is it with GL and it seems like you will either like the concept or not. I do wish they would have had more earth bound stuff and tried to stay away from Oa and showing all 3600 lantern. I know, thats not what fans want, but I can't help thinking that them catering to the fans alone might have screwed them in the long run. I'm still excited to see it but I really dont think the reviews will be that great because the concept itself is pretty laughable and I'm positive tough for a lot of people to swallow. There one saving grace will be if kids really latch onto it.

**** the critics. The concept is far from laughable. It is awesome.

we learn that The Universe is patrolled by a group of fearless, multi-species warriors called The Green Lantern Corps––and, yes, each member is issued an actual old-school camping lantern, which they use to recharge the clunky rings that allow them to harness “the emerald energy of willpower” to “create what you see in your mind.”

They seem to have a problem with the actual source material. So I'm relieved then.

REally I dont see how the GL source material is any more ridiculous than Star Trek, Thor, X-men, etc.

I'm let down that the film begins with a voiceover explaining everything, probably the same one from the 3D trailer. That's kinda 1990s cheesy.

I'm telling you, the perception of this movie will kill it more than the movie's actualy merits. it feels like people want to dislike this film

I agree, but you know how it is here, a few bad reviews leads to people doubting, which leads to people unable to form their own opinions, which in turn leads to labeling it the worst movie ever. Sad thing is it seems like its a good movie.

I was just thinking that too blackman. Just replace phasers and star ships with the rings. It's good to think really out there sometimes.

I was skeptical from the start. Reynolds is not a very likeable guy and Lively is a weak actress, so that was offputing. The CGI doesn't look consistent either.

The few things that attracted me was Campbell and the composer. I think the score will be great though!

It's $12 a ticket. I think I'll wait until it is on TV.

The idea really doesn't seem anymore out there than say Avatar which made a s**tload. Or Thor for that matter.

I will have to wait to see the movie before I say anything about it but maybe just maybe it wasn't presented the right way in those reviewers opinions.

I must say that I do hate the fact that they explain things before the movie starts. I've never liked that in films, I've just never liked it. I can easily get past it like I did with Hellboy if the film is good.

No offense, but to who isn't he likeable, you? You do realize other people in the world exist that like comedy movies and may actually enjoy his films. Just because fans on a message board don't like him doesn't mean squat.

This was exactly what I meant before about interpreting the reviews.
I trust RT and Metacritic, but sometimes they rating will be off because critics can be obtuse.

I like Reynolds. He's a funny guy and an underrated actor and Lively's performance seems to be better than Katie Holmes and pretty much on a simular ground as Portman's in Thor. Maybe I'll change my mind when I watch the entire film but right now she looks fine in her role.

Do I have to write "In my opinion" in every sentence? Nowhere in that post did I say I was speaking for everyone.

Your right, you don't need to put IMO in every sentence. You do have to say for example "to me reynolds is not a very likeable actor". The way you wrote it came out as if you were speaking for everyone.

I've seen a load of crappy comic/sci-fi movies from the 1990s reviewed on Nostalgia Critic, and what's amusing is they all use that voiceover exposition convention at the beginning of the film.

It's like a staple of 90s cheesiness.

The reviews that we've gotten are just....weird and undeveloped. I dont know if the movie is whack or if its just the critics so far.

Some explaining needed to be done to those who dont know the concept. It will probably be similar to the last trailer. That's not a bad thing at all to explain how the guardians did what they did with the energy, parallax and all.

I'm also going to wait for more reviews because I'm not loving these reviews either. I don't agree with his Super 8 hate (It's very flawed but I still liked it) but I'm interested to see what Devin Faraci of Badass Digest thinks as he is my favorite reviewer when he isn't kissing up to Seth Rogen and other nerdy s**t that I don't give a flying f**k about.

I've never understood what made GL such an outlandish concept compared to everything else. If anything it's probably the easiest concept to grasp and the one with the most cinematic potential.

Remember, the critical darling of the 21st century is Mulholland Dr., so the critics aren't exactly afraid of the surreal.
