The Official Lanterns News & Discussion Thread

Sounds like the personalities are a little bit reversed lol! Hal being no nonsense/serious & gruff? I guess we gonna miss that character development haha.

Brolin works if they want to do Parallax. I love the idea of McConaughey and Pine. Olyphant is a terrific pick as well, but I hate the idea of McGregor.

1. Pine (has been my favorite for Hal since 09)
2. McConaughey
3. Olyphant
4. Brolin (should’ve been Batman in BvS)
5. McGregor

This is my exact order as well. Won't be mad with any, but McGregor is just harder to see as Hal.

I've noticed a lot of support for Chris Pine on social media. Here's hoping!

I grew up with JLU (John Stewart) but my very first comic book was Green Lantern: Rebirth. I went into a deep dive a year or two before the GL movie came out. Really loved Geoff Johns/Vindetti's take on Hal Jordan! I'd say 50% or so of my collection of comics is GL related haha! I have flip flopped between Hal & Kyle being my favorite. But I just recently re read some of the Johns run, so I'm feeling it!

Just picked this up at my comic shop! Zero Hour 30th Anniversary special! Apparently includes a new story by Ron Marz. I can't wait to read it!

{an again if your going that age}I'll add the fan-casts of...
Josh Duhamel (51)

and Tahmoh Penikett (49)

That first picture is the strangest picture of Olyphant I have ever seen. Is that AI?

I like Duhamel a lot but I don't buy him as Hal...

No wonder I don't recognize Olyphant. Bro looks dang near different in every photo posted in this thread so far.

Pine feels like such an outlier when all the other candidates are around a decade his senior. Makes it a bit hard for me to believe he’s the next choice after Brolin (if Brolin is even actually the first choice).

^ don't know what to tell you there, its a more recent pic of him, and was just a candid photo of him at some event, so, it's just not in the context you're use to seeing him in (with his hair down/ and messy and not posing for camera) I guess

it's possible they were just using Brolin to test the waters of how people react to going that much older with the character.... so, had Pine as their back up plan to reverse course if those waters were to tempted

but, if people were cool with the age, but they couldn't secure Brolin they still wanted some older options

I'd still rather Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan if you are casting older anyway. I'd rather see him as Hal than Guy. Just watching his animated version with his voice is much better than any of these other choices to me. But atleast Nathan will be part of this anyway so there is some good. One thing about Gunn, he loves to put Nathan in his movies.

Yeah, this is something that kinda bugs me. If your plan was older Hal in his 50s, it makes so much sense to cast the guy who's been fan cast in the role since basically the internets inception lol. And also voiced Hal in animated films. And obviously fits the character perfectly/visually. That said, I think he will do just fine as Guy Gardner!

If they were testing the waters with Brolin, there was quite a lot of push back on Brolin's age. And as soon as Chris Pine was mentioned, the comments flooded with wanting Chris Pine as Hal Jordan. I'd say he's gotten the most support, with Timothy Olyphant being the next one.

Point 1) probably.

Point 2) I agree. Something seemed off about how easily the rumor circulated about Brolin...like it was a test to see what the reaction would be.

I am not sure he has the body type to fit the character these days. He would need to get in better shape ;)

I am curious what you guys think, could you see any of these actors listed also for the role as Sinestro? Timothy Olyphant as Sinestro?

Definitely not. He’s pure Hal.

I could kinda see Brolin as Sinestro I guess. But not McConaughey or McGregor or Pine.

Also, I just wanna state for the record that I think Fillion’s massive d**che energy has always made him a better fit for Guy than Hal, and I’m soooo glad Gunn saw that because being a popular fancast doesn’t always make the fans right. In fact it usually doesn’t. “The fans” as a collective entity are generally kind of lazy who just cast for looks or “role I’ve already seen this person play in something else,” which is why I’m so very glad casting directors exist.

David Corenswet is a rare case of fancasting that was spot-on, but that’s just because he happened to look exactly like Superman AND be perfect for the role in other ways, AND really want it, AND have the training and talent to do it justice. He’s a unicorn. Most fancasting just makes me glad the fans aren’t in charge.

I don't expect him to show up here, but I'm really curious to see what plans Gunn has for Sinestro if any. If we are getting an older Hal, I can see the Sinestro Corp already being a thing maybe.

Too bad it couldn't be Mark Strong I really liked him as Sinestro...
Cast him again, I don't care! He was perfect for that role. Perfect, imo.

But if not him, it's this guy for me:
