The Official Michael Shannon IS General Zod - Part 1

The more this news sinks in the happier I become.

I really didn't want Zod but I'm absolutely positive Shannon will hand in something spectacular. This is going to be his break out role as a big character actor. His performance in Revolutionary was the highlight of that movie for me, really his character was so strangely disturbed and intriguing.

I'm really happy for him and I seriously expect an incredible performance.

Casting really has been incredible so far.

Not to mention the recent comics have given him a nice backstory:

The back-story for the three Kryptonians was revealed in Action Comics Annual #10; Non had once been a brilliant scientist on par with Jor-El. Both were researching the event that would ultimately destroy Krypton. Zod entered their lab with troops (at this point Zod was still working for Krypton's Council). Both Jor-El and Non were arrested by Zod and given a warning by the High Council to halt their research, then released. Jor-El set to work creating the rocket that would send his son Kal-El to Earth, while Non began to spread the word of the planet's impending doom. Non's message swayed both Zod and Ursa that Krypton was soon to be destroyed. Non then disappeared from public life, only to return with a mutilated brain. The council had transformed him into a mindless brute and this act inspired Zod and Ursa to rebel against the Kryptonian government. Without any sense of right and wrong, Non now fought alongside Zod and Ursa. Zod attempted to recruit Jor-El to their cause; however Jor-El saw the plans were fueled by greed, a lust for power and violence.
This rebellion was short-lived and the rebels were again arrested and set to be executed. Not wishing to resort to execution, Jor-El appealed on their behalf, to exile them instead. The council accepted this on the condition that Jor-El would be the jailer. Thus Zod, Ursa, and Non were imprisoned, and embittered against Jor-El for years to come.

thanks for posting this Sage. i like how they fleshed out the events prior to Krypton's destruction and involved Jor-El in the process. if they intend to expand on the Krypton mythos, like it sounded they plan on doing, it would be nice to see some of this happen.

This to me is Ledger as the Joker similar. A guy maybe you didn't expect but one of the best actors out there. I'm fine with Zod, but I do understand people wanting a new villian. I wonder if Edgar Ramirez is still up for a part? Non maybe?

i hope this time Zod has a cape and a cool costume. if done properly, it could be reminiscent of the Roman generals.

I wouldn't mind some of those more alien fan manips of Superman's costume for Zod's instead.

I've seen some that I wouldn't want for Superman but some of them would be perfect for Zod.

That'd be pretty cool.

I wonder how good Shannon is at doing an english accent?

I would love to hear him speaking as Zod in a Californian accent

"Yooo,duuuude. Like,you knooow...Kneel before,Zod,and everything...What..ever..." :lmao:

Yes...that's about as Californian as a Pirate accent is Irish.

So...pretty close, actually. :O

I'm fine with Zod, but i'm still hopeful for villains like Brainiac and Metallo, they have alot of potential.

Well sure. I want to see Braniac too, but I can wait if that means what is neccessary for the right story. To me bringing out Braniac in the first film didn't seem right. Yeah, the temptation is there to bring in someone else, but I give them alot of credit for going with someone they would figure would get this kind of reception instead of just going for the fan favorite for the sake of it.

And if Braniac ties into this like Zod coming from his prison planet (I got that right? I seem to remember someone mentioning it. It seemed like a good idea) to hint at him, then that's even cooler.

This doesn't mean they're going back to the Donner films by having Zod. Open your minds. I'm not saying you're small minded and you have the right to your opinion, but to dismiss it and say that this will be a retread of Superman 2 is silly. I think this is going to be so different. You won't even think to compare the two fi this delivers in the right way.

to the anti-Zods.......no matter how disappointed you are, at least this time it's not about Lex Luthor trying to acquire land. *knocks on wood*

Eva Green For Ursa:awesome:

I didn't expect (or want) Zod in this movie. However, Michael Shannon is a good actor and I'm sure he'll do his own take different than Terrence Stamp's.

Now let's see a different villain, other than Zod and Ursa cast in this film.

Well my excitement for this movie has completely died. Not because of the actor, but because Zod is boring. So much for moving away from the Donner movies.

sooooo many people are gonna be eating their words when the theatrical trailer comes out...you don't even know!!!

*hopes i'm not one of them, hehe*

I don't want to see a different villain thrown in because Zod is in it again. I don't know people keep looking at it like that. If this calls for Zod and Luthor again, then so be it. I'm not expecting a rehash. It makes the most sense.

Zod is a physical threat for one thing, is tied to the Krytponian mythology, and we're going to get a fist fight between them that's going to look a billion times better than the ones in the Donner films. And we're going to get a completely different performance out of Shannon.

When hearing this today, its just another huge disappointment. I think I'm going to stop following MOS and give up on Superman all together on the big screen.

Its unreal how people here have screaming for something new and haven't gotten a single thing new yet they are happy Routh is gone along with wanting to get rid of Williams' score.

Another Superman movie with General Zod and people are happy. Unreal. I got a feeling this movie is going to be an epic dud.

Love that idea.

Likewise, no way did I think we'd be seeing the same Zod from the Donner films when Shannon was announced. I really believe we'll be seeing a different portrayal of the character so that's why i'm in total support of the casting of Shannon and what he'll bring to the table.

Saving Brainiac for the sequel would be the way to go for sure and a little foreshadowing in the first film would be great too.

Probably not. They have already stated they are trying to distance themselves from the Donner versions. So I doubt it will be the Donner version of Zod. It will be far from it.

Well sure, Snyder and Co. will present their own version of Zod...but it will be inspired by the current comic version...introduced by Richard Donner in Superman:The Movie.
Why?
Every movie needs a catch phrase..a marketable hook that will spread like wildfire and adhere to peoples mind like crazy glue.
Do you really think they are going to pass on using the phrase,
"Kneel before Zod!" ?????

Hell, no! As I wrote before, that is one of the most memorable movie quotes of all time, on par with "Luke, I am your father" and "I'm going to give you an offer you can't refuse."

Think about how you can market the hell out of "Kneel before Zod" or just plain "Kneel" posters and t-shirts...

I know, I know.
Snyder wants you to see his movie as if no previous Superman flicks had ever been made. We can all play pretend for him, but If they cast Ursa and Non (Donner Superman characters) it will be pretty hard to do so with a straight face.

Anyone tried any "Kneel" promo poster manips?

Now.....who will be cast as Lex?
