I've thought about that, but I really don't think that is a fair comparison. The Joker is Batman's nemesis....his arch enemy for all time. Nolan really hit on that at the end of Dark Knight. Batman and the Joker will forever be locked in battle, and you could never envision a world where one lives to a ripe old age with the other dead. You would feel the living character has lost something. That angle has been looked at in several episodes of TAS and the last movie.

Are you really saying that Zod fits that same comparison with Superman? I understand the argument, but it doesn't work for me with these 2 characters.

I get a kick out of how some complain about how a character like Zod who has not been seen on the big screen in 30 years is a bad thing to have in this Superman film.

Were these same people whining about Joker being reused almost 20 years after Batman 89? Didn't think so.

I'm not sure about this. Is Zod REALLY such an important villain? I mean, he's not like the Joker/Batman thing. When someone says, "Let's make a Batman movie" the next question will always be, "Ok, who plays Joker". But, I don't get the same feeling with the Zod/Superman thing. It's usually Lex or possibly Brainiac.

I just want this film to stand on its own as much as possible. Comparison to Donner is inevitable of course, but if you're going to TRULY reboot Supes, then bring as much new to the movie as you can.

We've seen Zod, and we loved it. Stamp is iconic in the role. It doesn't need to be redone or fixed. If he says, "KNEEL!!" then i'll just roll my eyes. Unoriginality strikes again.

Here's the problem. If people are willing to accept new re-interpretations of "old" characters, that should be a universal truth.

With Cavill, people expect he'll give us a performance that is unique to himself. Separate from Reeves, Reeve, Cain, Welling, and Routh.

With Amy, separate from Neill, Kidder, Bosworth, and Durance.

So on and so forth.

Like it or not, Zod has become one of the primary Superman villains. It all started with Donner and much of the character's popularity still sees his influence, but his stamp is etched nonetheless. He is inherently tied to Kal-El's homeworld, so that gives him a very distinct advantage in potential to connect various themes and arcs. He's completely equal in skill with Supes, which provides a large platform to drive an action vehicle. And lastly he looks human, which makes him a viable jumping-off point for antagonists that will continue to get flashier and flashier. From a cinematic point of view, Zod is completely ideal for a first movie.

We've got a brilliant indie actor on our hands. We're practically guaranteed a fresh perspective on the franchise, from all accounts. I'm not understanding this concern of rehashing the old. People are getting hung up in technicalities of who appeared more, and what was in-between. Doesn't matter. If it's been done, that classifies as "old". Waiting longer doesn't make it any more fresher.

people are complaining about seeing zod again, but if he's the best villain for the story, I'd hate for him to be off limits just because he was in a superman movie 30 years ago.

Except Superman has other villains in the comics besides Lex Luthor and Zod and I bet fans would want to see a villain we haven't seen on screen yet. Seriously according to the Superman movies, Superman only has two villains of note.

I think these are different to a degree because Batman had so many other villains in films, unlike Superman. Superman's rogues gallery has been limited on film.

I dont think the general public barely remember the original movie...considering that Superman and Superman 2 have been on TBS all this month, the collected box set came out, to many people Christopher Reeve is still Superman regardless of Brandon Routh or Tom Welling.....to illustrate the point Yahoo news is using a pic of Christopher Reeve as Superman as the pic to Shannon being cast as Zod.

I think those that are upset are wondering why they aren't using a villain like Brainiac or Metallo. Which I can understand. That being said, Zod isn't the end of the world, it's just more underwhelming than hearing Brainiac.

honestly...i'm starting to wonder if Lex is even gonna be in this film. they've already cast 3, arguably 4 pretty big names in this film so it's not as if they'll be acting for cheap and they can only spend but so much on casting. they've still got Ursa, Perry, Jimmy, Jor-El and Lara they need to cast. i'm wondering if they're gonna pull a Batman Begins/the Dark Knight and just tease Lex Luthor for a possible sequel.

i just think back to when they announced scarecrow as batmans villain i was disappointed but that turned out great.

you may think those guys are "big names" but costner hasnt been in anything for a long time. hes not exactly a big money actor, neither is Shannon. These are very good actors but this isnt like they just casted will smith or something who will take up 20million of the budget.

While ppl complain about Zod because "hes been done before", at the same time those same ppl want to see Williams score, Clark arrival at Metropolis and Superman stopping natural disaster.

ALL OF THOSE THINGS done before! And even more than Zod!

Says who? I didn't want Zod, I certainly don't want Williams score (and I'm confident we won't get it) nor do I have a ton of interest in natural disasters (at least not as the films major setpieces).

Why can't fans be annoyed that with tons of Superman villains who have never been touched (Darkseid, Doomsday, Brainiac, Mettalo, Bizzaro, Parasite, etc.) in films, we just aren't dying to see Zod.
