I thought Shannon would have been great as Lex but he's equally a great choice for Zod.  I think it's no secret this will be a different portrayal of Zod we'll be getting and I look foward to it greatly. I'm blown away by the casting for this movie....

Also, thank you Zack Snyder for giving me a reason to love Sundays. :awesome:

Wow the casting for this is wowing me by the minute. Adams, Costner and now Shannon?! im glad shannon got himself into a major production where he can show the entire world how great he truly is. One should only see his performance in RevRoad and Boardwalk Empire to show you how menancing he can truly be,

Good actor but very surprised and a little dissapointed we are getting Zod, who knows though, we may only see him in the Krypton scene's so there is still a possibility of getting another villain.

I definitely agree!

To those who asked,

Zod was a very minor character from the 60s who was nothing like the Zod from the Donner movies. He was a bit player and appeared here and there and his last pre-Crisis appearance was in the final issue of DC Comics Presents.
After Crisis (and a pocket universe story paying homage to the minor Zod character of the 60s), various writers, obviously inspired by the Donner movies, introduced their own versions of Zod which has as much to do with the Donner version as the Zod from the silver age did...in other words, nothing.

Zod was properly introduced to the DC Universe in Action Comics #844 by Johns and.......Richard Donner(!) , collected in the Superman Last Son trade(what was that in 06?).

The Zod in the comics is now the Donner version.
Again, prior to 2006, Zod from the Donner movies was not a comic book character.

I'm pretty sure that the Zod we are getting is the Donner version...

it looks that after Superman Returns (Superman the Movie Remake), we are now getting a remake of Superman II!
So much for realism.
Let's see if Ursa and Non show up.
It now sounds like they are going to use the plot of Superman: Earth One, with Zod as the invading alien.

The best part is using Zod makes for EXCELLENT marketing.
Think it over, who doesn't know the phrase,
"Kneel Before Zod!" ????
That phrase is as popular as "Luke, I am your father."!
Now we can get the posters that say
"Kneel " in them! :yay:

I also prefer an unseen villain(in the movies)so far,But I don't think Zod again is as bad as others are making it seem!,Maybe they can at least do references to villains&other characters to potentially lead to them coming in for a sequel!

With the casting of Shannon, I wonder if they are going more with the pre-crisis Zod.

I'm pretty sure that the Zod we are getting is the Donner version...

Probably not. They have already stated they are trying to distance themselves from the Donner versions. So I doubt it will be the Donner version of Zod. It will be far from it.

I do particularly like the idea of using "kneel before zod!" as a great marketing line, good idea Saboth!

But yeah someone on this thread mentioned that Shannon and Snyder should approach Zod by way of Heath approaching Joker. Take the spirit of the character from the source material and put a unique twist on it, looks wise and performance wise. Shannon is more than good for it, we could have one hell of a villain on our hands.

As for the people who hope for Brainiac...bad luck, but who knows, if this film does well and if we ever get blessed with this sequel (all things considered with the rights hoopla) Brainiac would be an excellent villain for a sequel.

What, like Pokolistan Zod or something?

Quick Shannon - Zod

At least that way,People would be b*ching less(I sure hope so)about Zod being a movie villain again and be happy that at least this Zod would be much more close to the original comics!

I don't even know who Michael Shannon is. :(

thanks for this interesting, insightful post. even if they end up going with the Zod that Donner ultimately established, i don't think he'll be portrayed the same way the previous movies portrayed him. if Zod is the main villain then, yes, we are getting Superman 1 and 2 repackaged, but i see that as a testament to how well those movies were scripted. when you take into consideration the other villains from Superman's rogues gallery, it seems like Zod is the best fit for the main villain for a modern day origin tale. Brainiac is too big, Metallo and Parasite are too small. despite Donner projecting this character into popularity, Zod is just right for a modern origin movie that needs to have lots of action.

What, like Pokolistan Zod or something?

No not like that but as some one else said going to the core of the character and kinda giving it their own twist. I'm just saying it won't be as....cheesy.

Ugh, I still don't see what was so cheesy about Zod. Some of you just can't stand any sortof humor in a superhero movie. :whatever:

I don't even know who Michael Shannon is. :(

Well you will be finding out how great he is and how much you have missed out soon enough!(yes I have that much faith in him for this already!)

You and me agreed on this earlier. To me it makes the most logical sense. Zod is tied so close with his Kryptonian heritage, and has equal powers, it will create a great origin story. I think this is a good thing.

Save Brainiac and Metallo for the sequels. I want them very bad, but I want to set up a great Superman first. Then his main rouges.

I think as Dorky and others said, I think too many have Zod from Donner's films stuck in their heads.

I'm stoked to see where they go. Since this is a re-invention we are going to have another origin story. I don't want to see Brainiac or Metallo shoved into an origin story just so we could have them. I'd rather the sequels have them where they can be fleshed out.

Agreed. To me, Zod seemed the most logical sense. Especially since this deals with the Kryptonian mythology. Zod seemed like the best first villain paired up with that idea. Braniac is much better as a second film villain.

But seriously, you guys are just thinking about Superman 2. Well, yeah, of course, but I'm confident they are going to do something completely different. You guys need to get Terrence Stamp out of your heads and think that they can do so much more now. And the GA isn't going to remember or care about it. Think about how limited Superman 2 is compared to what can be accomplished today in all aspects. If you think about it, it could be very different. And I'm betting it will be.

As long as we see Superman and Zod punching the **** out of eachother and leveling buildings you guys aren't going to complain.

I don't even know who Michael Shannon is. :(

A ****ing great actor. You needn't be worried.

the only thing i found cheesy about Zod was his costume. Terrence Stamp played Zod with awesomeness.

Humor can be done, but to me what he was was not really humor. But to eaches own. I thought in S:TM it worked great but in Superman II I felt it went a little overboard as some one said the outfit was one thing. I loved the film but I think they can do it differently.

And there is nothing wrong with having a serious Zod either. And I bet that is what they are going for.

i wonder if Michael Shannon did an audition with Henry Cavill. they NEED to have chemistry!!!

another parody of an Amy Adams complaint
