Welcome to the era of the 32x all over again. Forget your old ****** hardware guys, please buy the new one..you don't HAVE to but we'll make sure you'll feel miserable if you don't
Not quite. The 32X never made sense as it launched at the same time as the Saturn. It was also an add on, not a brand new unit

also, does this mean the PS VR won't work with the current PS4 models?? only with the newer model ( if it's true )?

that would really suck.

Sony should offer some kind of trade in for your old PS4.

I hope so.

theres nothing to hope for bc it will. Im sorry but its silly to think that PSVR will be exclusive to this new PS4K model. People are freaking out over nothing. Sony just opened up preorders, which sold out fast. I would venture that the bulk of those are from people that already own a PS4. You really think they are going to release the device for it and it doesnt work? Most of the preorders will get cancelled if that were case. The specs for PSVR arent even earth shattering impressive so its not like the PS4 cant handle it and Sony has secretly been showing the games on a PS4K

well, guess we'll find out whenever they make this official.

Where is there any indication that the VR headset will be only for this PS4K? PSVR was announced a long time before PS4K. What in the world are some of you on about haha?

Did you just like...straight up copy and paste a NeoGAF comment here, or are you the same NeoGAF poster who posted that?

I've read some articles say the PS4K might offer a more "high end" VR experience, which could suggest the new console is better "optimized" for VR.

which would imply the current model would offer a "lower end" VR experience?

so, while VR will work with the current model, to get the "best" experience, you'd have to buy the newer model.

That's not the same as now working with the older model, though?

well, I was just throwing it out there for discussion. :o

however, if it is indeed true, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony does try to steer users towards the new console to enjoy the full VR experience.

I'm actually more interested in what other benefits the new console will offer outside of VR and 4K. like, just how will the extra power affect existing games as well as future games.

So to clarify a point I made last page, in order to play any games due out after this new console is released I will have to upgrade just to play them?

Having only bought my PS4 2/3 months ago I wasn't looking to upgrade for a number of years.

No! If that were the case, then it would essentially be a backwards compatible PS5, which it is not.

It wouldnt even make sense. The PS4 will have close to 45-50M units worldwide by fall. Why would developers abandon that in favor of making games exclusively for this new version that will be brand new with small install base? Why would Sony cripple its own software sales like that? That would serve no purpose than to give MS room to become the lead console

People likely wont have a choice. This will likely become the new standard PS4 model, much like the Slim versions of the previous gen before it. The old PS4 may continue to be sold alongside it for a set amount of time, but that will probably be until stock depletes

Something not mentioned here but speculation I read is that the extra power could be solely for the VR experience. As it stands, the headset requires an external processing unit bc the PS4 cant handle it all. This new model could have that integrated into the console so that the headset communicates directly with it, with no external device required. That would make PSVR cheaper to manufacture and get Sony more profits per unit sold

Well of course haha.

Option 1: a few hundred extra dollars per user who upgrades
Option 2: no extra dollars

if the extra power is solely for VR, then I have less reason to upgrade or worry. I'm not even sure if I want the VR unit at this point.

of course.

but Sony has to walk the fine line between getting people to upgrade vs ticking their customer base off.

If new games can still be played on the standard console I don't think there's a problem. This would just represent more choice for those who wanted to spend more for better performance. Will be interesting to see what they say about VR on the 2 console variants.

but if newer AAA titles that take advantage of the extra power can NOT be played on the current model, THEN there will be a problem. in that case, you will feel the need to upgrade to continue experiencing the best the PS4 can offer.

it will also depend on the price of the new console. will it be in the $400-$500 range? Will it be substantially greater than $500?

and what trade in incentives will they offer for current owners?

if we can upgrade for effectively $200-$250 by trading in our current PS4, then it might not be so bad.

Yes that's what I was getting at too. If those who stay with the standard version can no longer play future games that will be a huge problem. If they can be played with strandard performance while the advanced version has an advanced performance I don't think anyone loses. I think a trade-in incentive would continue to encourage long term loyalty to Playstation for fans.

if newer AAA games don't even work on the old model how are they still even Ps4 games? How is it even the same goddamn platform?

yeah.

and the more I think about it, the more I think what Havok said above could be true.

that the extra power will be just for VR. or for 4K displays.

that way, this would be a very "niche" or targeted upgrade that would only affect a limited segment of the user base - those who want the extra power for VR or 4K. the majority of the user base would remain unaffected when it comes to games performance.

it would be like what they did with the New 3DS or whatever it's called.

certain games can only be played on that newer model due to the extra power/features.

Let's hope that's what it is then. Needing a new console about 12 months after buying my last one would simply mean they lose me as a customer. I have only just gone back to playing games so preferably this isn't something I would want to do.

that is a terrible idea. i've been more vocal about this on other forums but if that's what console gaming becomes, i'm out

I agree with both of you.

it may work for a handheld/mobile device, but not so much for a $400-500 console.
